Background / History
Shrek Academy is described as the continent's premier and “number one” academy. Its reputation is strong enough to grant its students visibility, deterrence against outside factions, and privileged treatment at major events. The academy deliberately allows outside powers to learn of students’ achievements, believing its martial strength and prestige discourage attacks on promising students traveling beyond Shrek City. 25
The academy’s prestige is also attributed to its survival-focused educational philosophy. Its assessments expose students to forms of conflict they may encounter throughout a soul master’s life, including battles for resources, cultivation, personal grudges, and survival against soul beasts. While this system produces relatively few graduates, those who do graduate are considered highly capable of surviving on the continent. 146
Its admissions standards have reportedly declined and its entrance requirements relaxed. Students who fail or are expelled face severe consequences: by the time of the freshman assessment, enrollment at other major academies has generally closed, while age limits make reapplying the next year difficult. Many expelled students remain near Shrek City rather than leave. 4 17
The academy divides students between an Outer Court and Inner Court. Advancement to the Inner Court is presented as prestigious, but Inner Court disciples can face difficulty leaving the institution to join other factions. Ling Luochen characterizes the academy’s current state as utilitarian, while Huo Yuhao refuses to bind his future to it. 32 58
Shrek’s failure to reclaim the championship during the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament severely damages its internal atmosphere. The official Inner Court Shrek Seven Devils lose their titles, the Outer Court reserve Shrek Seven Devils designation is revoked, and the affected students’ Core Disciple privileges are canceled. The Inner Court subsequently becomes tense and oppressive, with the repercussions extending to Outer Court staff. 128 132
Following this setback, the academy adopts a more aggressive external posture in pursuit of a decisive victory that can reinforce its reputation. Its Inspectorate activity becomes more assertive, including Ma Xiaotao’s pursuit of Evil Soul Masters into Sun Moon Empire territory. 139
Organization
Sea God Pavilion
The Sea God Pavilion is Shrek Academy’s senior authority. It rewards Huo Yuhao after the assassination incident with a bank card and Shangbao Association card, investigates the assassination order, and eliminates the responsible guild. 46
During the Body Sect’s attempt to seize Huo Yuhao and other Body Sect disciples, the Pavilion mobilizes to defend Shrek City. Mu En repels Du Busi’s attack with Sea God’s Light after Du Busi threatens war at the city gates. 121
- Mu En — Dean of Shrek Academy and one of the remaining Limit Douluos. He recognizes Huo Yuhao’s potential and advises against coercing him into the Inner Court. He later personally defends Shrek City from Du Busi. 5 28 53 121
- Xuan Zi — Senior figure variously identified as an Inner Court Dean and top-tier Titled Douluo. He oversees Core Disciple selection, reserve-team recruitment, training, and the academy’s tournament mission. He protects the tournament delegation against the Body Sect despite being defeated by Du Busi. 49 52 57 118 120
- Yan Shaozhe — Outer Court Dean who oversees the freshman-assessment semifinal draw. He later leads Shrek’s exchange delegation to Maple Leaf City. 25 136
Shrek Inspectorate
The Inner Court also serves as the Shrek Inspectorate, whose members combat Evil Soul Masters. Members receive Inspector uniforms and rings, and joining entails a serious long-term commitment. 59
- Confirmed recruits — Ning Tian, Wu Feng, and Bei Bei. 59
- Students who decline immediate enrollment — Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, Xiao Xiao, and Jiang Nannan. 59
- Inspector equipment — An Inspector’s Ring is blood-bound to its owner and serves as both identity verification and a storage Soul Tool containing equipment such as cloaks, masks, and distress flares. 59
- Ma Xiaotao’s fall — Ma Xiaotao later becomes an Evil Soul Master following an ambush near the Sun Moon Empire border, dealing a major blow to the academy’s reputation and Inspectorate. 133
Soul Engineering Departments
Shrek maintains Soul Engineering Departments in both its Inner and Outer Courts, though its soul engineering system is less specialized and less developed than that of the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy. The academy historically places greater value on martial-soul combatants, and some Martial Soul Department students and faculty openly dismiss Soul Engineering. 135 140 144
- Fan Yu — Soul Engineering Department teacher involved with Shrek’s exchange delegation at the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy. 145
- He Caitou — Outer Court Core Disciple from the Soul Engineering Department who joins the tournament team as a reinforcement. 112
- Ye Xiaosheng — Inner Court Soul Engineering Department exchange student who clashes with Huo Yuhao over the latter’s decision to study under Mingde Hall. 140 141
Education and Assessments
Admissions
Applicants require a recommendation letter, bone-age verification, and confirmation that they meet the academy’s cultivation requirements. Applicants without a Tang Sect recommendation letter may face additional enrollment tests, including a basic soul-skill execution assessment. 4 5
Students wear color-coded uniforms corresponding to their grade-level teaching buildings, with freshmen assigned white uniforms bearing the green “little monster” academy badge. 6
Freshman Assessment
The freshman assessment is an elimination competition in which roughly half of the participating students are removed. Teams consist of three students, with one Power Attack System soul master permitted. 16 17
- The assessment battlefield is described as vast and intimidating. 17
- Wang Yan serves as an assessor and referee during matches. 17
- The assessment area contains fifty twenty-meter combat zones and accommodates 310 teams under the supervision of fifty teachers. 17
- Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, and Xiao Xiao win the freshman tournament championship. 28
Core Disciple Assessment
Core Disciples from different years participate in an elimination tournament supervised by Xuan Zi. Following one such trial, Xuan Zi retains seven students as possible reserve or substitute members for the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. 49 52
Live Combat Training
Xuan Zi conducts intense live-combat training with Huo Yuhao as his sparring partner. Huo Yuhao turns these sessions into public displays intended to intimidate upperclassmen and preserve his standing. 53
Beast Fighting and Advancement Assessments
The Outer Court’s Beast Fighting Zone is a major academy resource point and contains a large soul beast breeding area. Students use its Beast Fighting Arena for advancement assessments and live combat training against soul beasts. 40
Policies and Culture
- Competitive culture — The academy’s freshman assessment and Inner Court environment are portrayed as harsh, survival-oriented, and intensely competitive. 16 17 52
- Practical survival education — Shrek’s assessment system prioritizes practical experience over comprehensive conventional instruction, exposing students to combat circumstances ranging from interpersonal disputes to human–soul beast conflicts. 146
- Public reputation — Strong students are encouraged to be conspicuous; Shrek’s reputation makes prominent students safer from hostile factions, while weaker students near elimination are more vulnerable. 25
- Information exchange — Information brokers among students and vendors around campus sell intelligence on Shrek students to outside factions; the academy tolerates this exposure as part of a broader balance. 25
- Talent recruitment — Senior figures seek to retain exceptional students through Core Disciple status, Inner Court invitations, reserve-team positions, rewards, and personal negotiations. 28 31 32 52 53
- Soul Tool adoption — During the tournament period, Shrek decides that all students will fully adopt Soul Tools, marking a shift away from an exclusively traditional soul-master approach. Inner and Outer Court disciples are to receive custom defensive Soul Tools, while control- and auxiliary-type soul masters are required to obtain offensive or close-combat Soul Tools as well. 84
- Soul engineering bias — Despite its decision to adopt Soul Tools, Shrek’s institutional culture continues to undervalue Soul Engineers and lacks the specialized instructional divisions used by the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy. 140 144
- Post-defeat militarization — After its tournament failure, Shrek becomes more willing to display force and conduct Inspectorate operations beyond the borders of the original three Douluo Continent nations. 139
Facilities and Locations
- Shrek City — The city associated with the academy. Recommendation letters can be acquired through local black markets before enrollment. 5
- Dormitories — New students are assigned dorm rooms upon admission; Huo Yuhao is placed with Wang Dong. The dormitory complex is divided into white, yellow, purple, and black sections for different grades. 5
- Shrek Seven Devils Plaza — Campus plaza containing Tang San’s statue and statues of the original Shrek Seven Devils, Flender, and Yu Xiaogang. 6
- Shrek Square — Gathering site for freshmen who have passed the freshman assessment and where post-assessment rewards and class arrangements are announced. 30
- Beast Fighting Zone — A central Outer Court resource area containing the academy’s Beast Fighting Arena and a large soul beast breeding facility. 40
- Bamboo grove near the Inner Court — Location used by Xuan Zi for private meetings and temperament tests; it contains a tactical formation. 32
- Sea God Pavilion — Seat of high-level academy authority. 46
Tournament Role
Shrek Academy enters the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament as the continent’s most celebrated representative academy. Its appearance attracts intense public attention, including the Star Luo Emperor’s attendance, and its team receives a larger, better-serviced rest area than other academies. 65 67 72
The academy’s tournament squad includes members with a conspicuous age gap, leading rival teams to speculate that Shrek has either assembled favored “seed” students with powerful veterans or entered with a last-minute, makeshift lineup. 67
- Tournament leadership — Wang Yan handles team condition assessments and tactical meetings, while Xuan Zi leads the broader mission. 62 65 70
- Reserve Team — Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, Xiao Xiao, and Jiang Nannan are among the reserve students involved in the campaign. 59 61
- Public expectations — Crowds cheer Shrek’s arrival, though much of the attention increasingly centers on Huo Yuhao rather than the academy as a whole. 72 84
- Internal strain — Injuries to Ma Xiaotao and Dai Yueheng, disagreements over strategy, and conflict between Huo Yuhao and Wang Yan weaken the team’s unity during the competition. 65 70 77 85
- True Heaven Academy defeat — After Xiao Xiao and Wang Dong win the opening match, Bei Bei and Jiang Nannan lose to True Heaven’s Shangguan Can and Blood Wolf. Dai Yueheng’s disregard for the agreed formation then contributes to his poisoning, severe injury, and Shrek’s defeat in the deciding match. 105 106 107 108
- Reinforcements — In response to its depleted lineup, Shrek dispatches Inner Court disciples Lin Xinlong and He Xiao, as well as Soul Engineering Department Core Disciple He Caitou, to reinforce the tournament team. 112 113
- Advance to the top eight — Douling Royal Academy forfeits a group-stage match to avoid exposing its abilities. Shrek later reaches the top eight after Lin Xinlong completes a one-versus-three in the individual elimination round, then secures a one-sided quarterfinal victory against the weakest remaining team. 114 117
- Body Sect attack — Following the quarterfinals, the Body Sect ambushes Shrek’s delegation in an effort to seize Huo Yuhao and other Body Sect disciples. Xuan Zi, Ma Xiaotao, and Huo Yuhao cooperate to protect the group and escape toward Shrek City. 118 120
- Loss of honors — The academy ultimately fails to reclaim the championship. In the aftermath, it strips the Inner Court team of their Shrek Seven Devils titles, revokes the Outer Court reserve designation, and cancels the affected students’ Core Disciple privileges. 132
Notable Members
- Huo Yuhao — Freshman-assessment champion and former Core Disciple whom the academy considers for the Inner Court, the Shrek Seven Devils, and the elite-tournament team’s core. He repeatedly rejects pressure to commit his future to Shrek, pursues an independent path during the exchange program, and intends to graduate from the Outer Court early. 28 32 53 132 141
- Wang Dong — Huo Yuhao’s roommate, teammate, former Core Disciple, and reserve-team member. During the Sun Moon exchange, Wang Dong sides with Huo Yuhao rather than the Shrek Soul Engineering Department delegation. 5 16 52 145
- Xiao Xiao — Member of Huo Yuhao’s freshman-assessment team and reserve squad. She also sides with Huo Yuhao during the Sun Moon exchange and is subsequently isolated by other Shrek exchange students. 6 16 59 145 146
- Jiang Nannan — Reserve-team member who declines immediate enrollment in the Shrek Inspectorate. She suffers a tournament defeat after Shangguan Can’s control ability forces her into conflict with Bei Bei. 59 106
- Ma Xiaotao — Inner Court student who guides new Inspectorate recruits and attempts to fight despite risks to her cultivation. She later becomes an Evil Soul Master following an ambush near the Sun Moon Empire border. 59 70 133
- Ling Luochen — Inner Court senior dissatisfied with aspects of Shrek’s present direction; later competes for its tournament team and supports Huo Yuhao against Lin Xinlong. 58 84 112
- Bei Bei — Shrek Inspectorate recruit and tournament participant. His defeats and the loss of his Core Disciple privileges weigh heavily on him after the tournament. 59 70 107 132
- Ning Tian — Shrek Inspectorate recruit who is captured by the Death God Envoy during the tournament mission. 59 62
- Lin Xinlong — Inner Court reinforcement with the Ruijin Dragon martial soul. He challenges Huo Yuhao’s authority, loses to him in a single exchange, and later helps Shrek advance through the individual elimination round. 112 117
- He Xiao — Inner Court reinforcement whose Xiaoyao Fan is a control-oriented, auxiliary-leaning martial soul. 112
- He Caitou — Outer Court Soul Engineering Department Core Disciple sent as a tournament reinforcement and Soul Tool specialist. 112 113
- Ye Xiaosheng — Shrek Soul Engineering Department exchange student who opposes Huo Yuhao’s decision to audit Mingde Hall and accuses him of betraying Shrek. 140 141
