Characteristics

Soul Beasts are living creatures capable of cultivating soul power and increasing their age over time. Their growth is normally slow enough that a Beast Tamer relying on natural cultivation may never see a contracted beast reach the millennium stage. 2

They vary greatly in form and intelligence. Recorded examples include plant-, insect-, avian-, tiger-, beetle-, and sword-type beings; low-intelligence plant Soul Beasts are specifically noted as slower and more troublesome to raise. 2 14 46

• Many possess racial skills, innate abilities whose proficiency can be trained and improved. 8 17
• Bloodline and racial potential influence a Soul Beast's future limits. 18 26
• Some Soul Beasts can gain or retain high intelligence, while others risk losing it during dangerous breakthroughs. 18 20

Growth and Evolution

Soul Beasts can cultivate naturally, but their rate of progress is far slower than that of Soul Masters. Xu Bai's Beast Taming Space slightly accelerates this process, while his Beast Taming Handbook can deduce cultivation methods and evolution routes to speed it up further. 2

Advancing in age is not always safe. Little Blue Silver Grass describes the transition from ten years to one hundred years as a dangerous change in life hierarchy, especially for a mixed-blood Soul Beast. 18

Some Soul Beasts can undergo unusual evolutions before reaching one hundred thousand years:

• First / Di Yi evolved from a Mutated Green-Red Tiger into the Golden Spirit Holy Tiger at the thousand-year stage, raising its racial potential to the hundred-thousand-year level. 61 62
• Little Blue follows the Nine Tribulations Blue Silver Grass evolution route, gaining a new racial skill with each recorded reverse-living process. 5 23 40
• Sword Spirit increased from eleven years to 999 years through repeated use of Enlightenment, demonstrating that externally assisted growth can greatly exceed ordinary cultivation speed. 46 81 82

Racial skills are innate abilities associated with a Soul Beast's race, evolution, or cultivation materials. Their quality and proficiency differ substantially between individuals. 8 23 40

Metal-Type Skills

Metal-oriented tiger Soul Beasts can awaken abilities related to metal manipulation and perception.

• Metal Spirit Power — a domain-type skill that affects nearby metal objects; Di Yi caused metal items and nails throughout a courtyard to move when activating it. 8
• Metal Spirit Perception — allows First to sense the location of metals. 40
• Metal Spirit Control — an evolved form of Metal Spirit Power used to manipulate metal in combat. 62 79
• Concealed Edge — a skill gained by First after becoming the Golden Spirit Holy Tiger. 62

Plant-Type Skills

Blue Silver Grass Soul Beasts may possess resilience-based abilities, while Little Blue gained additional skills through reverse-living.
