History
Ancient History
Spirit Hall preserves more than nine hundred volumes concerning the continent’s history. Its General History of the Continent reaches back approximately fifteen thousand years, while Sequel to the Five Douling Nations records wars fought over nine thousand years earlier between five great empires, including the Northern Dipper Empire and Star Spirit Empire 406.
The continent remained politically divided for thousands of years. Ling Yi regarded its dependence on Martial Soul Awakening, cultivation, and Soul Beast hunting as a stagnant social order that had changed little across millennia 316 407.
Rise of Spirit Hall and the Clear Sky Sect
Nearly a century before Ling Yi’s explanation to Ah Rou, Qian Daoliu began challenging the Titled Douluo who controlled regional factions. His victories allowed Spirit Hall to establish branches in cities whose rulers had previously refused its free Martial Soul Awakening services 355.
Tang Chen subsequently followed a similar path of challenges. Their campaigns killed or injured much of the older generation of Titled Douluo, creating a pronounced gap between generations. More than half of the continent’s known Titled Douluo eventually belonged to Spirit Hall, while Tang Chen’s Level 99 strength enabled the Clear Sky Sect to oppose it 314 355.
In Douluo Calendar year 2600, Spirit Hall sent two thousand Soul Masters to subjugate Sea God Island. Fewer than one hundred returned, and both accompanying Titled Douluo died. The survivors reported defeat at the hands of the Sea God’s high priestess 132.
Lingyun City and Continental Reform
Construction of Lingyun City began in midsummer 2616 around Green Cloud Mountain. The project replaced Green Mountain Town and relocated residents from the town and nearby villages into the new settlement 380.
Its growth disrupted established interests. Ling Yi sought to balance rival factions through cooperation and mutual benefit, but the city’s increasing demand for resources still provoked hostility. An attack that killed thirty-two people led him to investigate its backers, including agents connected to the Star Luo Empire 438.
| Development | Continental significance |
|---|---|
| Recognition as a top power | The Spirit City title-bestowal ceremony demonstrated Chen Jianjun’s and Chen Xin’s strength, securing broad recognition of Lingyun City alongside established powers 488. |
| Blue Silver Rice | Its high yield largely eliminated starvation caused by famine, barring exceptional circumstances 426. |
| Cultivated Soul Rings | The first annual Lingyun Auction in 2624 offered seventy-two attribute-varied Blue Silver Grass plants capable of providing Soul Rings 504. |
| Body-Tempering Martial Dao | Ling Yi established a powerful cultivation path beyond reliance on Martial Souls 558. |
| Qi and Blood Battle Formation | In early 2625, Lingyun City guards killed a Five-Ring Soul King without injury, demonstrating that coordinated martial artists could overturn conventional expectations of military power 540. |
| Continental Blue Silver Grass network | Nodes roughly every hundred li spread vitality outward from the Green Cloud Mountain Range, covering the continent in a blue-green network 566. |
Incorporation into the Lingyun Realm
Ling Yi’s confrontation with the Asura God’s projection outside Douluo Star shattered a nearby celestial body. The resulting meteor swarms threatened the continent and its surrounding seas. A giant summoned by Ling Yi swept away the meteors before Ling Yi destroyed the projection 613.
Douluo Star subsequently vanished from its stellar system, and the Asura God lost his connection to Slaughter City. Later accounts state that Douluo Continent became one of the Lingyun Realm’s three landmasses overnight; the former continent is subsequently called Lingyun Continent 614 618 696.
Geography
Political Regions
| Region | Location and characteristics |
|---|---|
| Heaven Dou Empire | Occupies the northern continent. Its territory includes a central imperial heartland, provinces, and subordinate kingdoms and duchies 5 67 380. |

| Water Wood Duchy | A small Heaven Dou vassal on the eastern coast, later described as lying in the empire’s northeastern corner. It contains only three cities, including its capital, Wood Plant City 5 16 40 532. |
| Barak Kingdom | Lies east of Heaven Dou’s Fasinuo Province and supplies grain to areas with limited farmland 67. |
| Haagen-Dazs Kingdom | Its territory is largely mountains, hills, and valleys associated with the western Heavenly Spirit Mountain Range 380. |
| Silves Kingdom | Lies south of the Heavenly Spirit Mountain Range near Jialing Pass and north of Fasinuo Province 380. |
| Lingyun City | Built near the continent’s geographical center, in territory between Heaven Dou, Star Luo, and the Star Dou Great Forest 380 532. |
Major Natural Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Heavenly Spirit Mountain Range | Heaven Dou’s largest mountain range. More than eighty percent of the empire’s mountain ranges connect to it directly or through subsidiary branches 380. |
| Jialing Pass | A strategic military chokepoint in the central Heavenly Spirit Mountain Range 380. |
| Star Dou Great Forest | The largest of the three major Soul Beast habitats. Its primeval woodland includes wetlands, marshes, and ridges, with stronger Soul Beasts concentrated toward its center 324 354. |
| Lake of Life | Located in the Star Dou Great Forest’s core region; the Silver Dragon King rests beneath it 115 540. |
| Lost Track Grand Canyon | One of the continent’s three major Soul Beast habitats, alongside the Star Dou Great Forest and the Land of the Far North 354. |
| Land of the Far North | A major Soul Beast habitat whose core can produce Ten Thousand Year Profound Ice Marrow 115 354. |
| Ice Seal Forest | A vast northern coniferous forest between Heaven Dou and the Land of the Far North, extending from the Winter Mountain Range in the west to the Frost Forest in eastern Water Wood 513. |
| Sunset Forest | Lies roughly one hundred li east of Heaven Dou City and contains the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 156 258 392. |
| Golden Sand Desert | The continent’s largest desert, located in Star Luo’s West Sand Province; characterized by severe desertification and year-round sandstorms 566. |
The Star Dou Great Forest straddles the two empires’ border. Maps place two-fifths within Heaven Dou and three-fifths within Star Luo, although Heaven Dou does not acknowledge that division 324.
Cities and Maritime Routes
- Heaven Dou City — Northern imperial capital, with hundred-meter-high walls and nearby access to Sunset Forest 273.
- Star Luo City — Star Luo’s imperial capital, located in its central Star Luo Province 180.
- Spirit City — Spirit Hall’s headquarters near the continent’s center. The city visited by Ling Yi has over two thousand years of history 115 318.
- Lingyun City — By 2627, described as the continent’s most populous and prosperous city 564.
- Vast Sea City — An established western maritime center, situated on a branch of the Heavenly Spirit Mountain Range 380 552.
- Nanhu City — The southernmost port city. Green Wood Merchant Association investment expanded its docks and made it a maritime trading stop second only to Vast Sea City 552.
- Sea God Island — An offshore religious power in the western sea, beyond mainland Spirit Hall’s control 115 132.
Climate
- Heaven Dou is colder than southern Star Luo. A cold current beginning in winter 2624 intensified northern snowfall, sometimes bringing heavy snow even in April and May 564.
- Frequent snow led Heaven Dou residents to replace flat roofs with domed or pointed designs to prevent collapse 564.
- The Heavenly Spirit Mountain Range largely shields Star Luo from the northern cold currents, preserving its hot southern climate 566.
- Lingyun City’s Blue Silver Grass barrier blocks cold winds and turns falling snow into rain over the Green Cloud Mountain Range 564.
Political Powers
| Power | Position and influence |
|---|---|
| Spirit Hall | The strongest established faction, with a continent-wide network of temples, main halls, sub-halls, and branches. Its reach gives it exceptional access to talented recruits and cultivation resources 74 569. |
| Clear Sky Sect | The foremost sect, whose standing against Spirit Hall depends heavily on Tang Chen’s Level 99 strength 314. |
| Heaven Dou Empire | Its imperial Xue Family functions more like the head of an alliance than an absolute ruling house 495. |
| Star Luo Empire | The White Tiger Dai Family and Spirit Cat Zhu Family maintain stronger central control through their Hell White Tiger Martial Soul Fusion Skill 495. |
| Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan | One of the Upper Three Sects, with roots older than those of the Clear Sky Sect and Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 145. |
| Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect | An Upper Three Sect with substantial high-level combat strength and a particularly strong concentration of Support System Soul Masters 458. |
| Great Soul Fighting Arena Alliance | Backed by seven established Soul Master clans whose combined influence rivals the two empires 169. |
| Lingyun City | A rising independent power whose fighters, commerce, and cultivation innovations earn it recognition among the continent’s leading factions 438 488 558. |
Individual strength determines a faction’s political weight. A single Titled Douluo can protect a growing organization for centuries, while a Level 99 expert can deter entire nations 314 402 504.
Society and Economy
Social Hierarchy
Martial Soul Awakening normally occurs at age six. Fewer than one in one hundred children possess Innate Soul Power and the aptitude to cultivate; those without it generally remain at the bottom of society 320 407.
Soul Masters enjoy privileges unavailable to ordinary people, including broad freedom to travel and settle elsewhere unless they have accepted obligations to a faction. Reaching the Three-Ring Soul Elder realm marks entry into a more distinctly privileged class 146 173.
Education is limited and heavily oriented toward Martial Souls. Cultural education, economics, public welfare, and strategy receive less attention, while poor rural access to academy places further disadvantages commoners 16 42.
Livelihoods and Trade
- Independent Soul Masters commonly earn commissions by helping others hunt Soul Beasts or selling valuable hides, flesh, blood, and bones 75.
- Soul Fighting Arenas provide prize money and betting opportunities; major Great Soul Fighting Arenas also signify a city’s economic and political importance 75 169.
- Cultivation resources are concentrated among major factions, leaving even powerful independent Soul Masters vulnerable to poverty 75.
- Soul Master subsidies support early cultivation. In the parallel No. 1 Douluo Continent, the two empires fund payments distributed by Spirit Hall to One-Ring Soul Masters, Grand Soul Masters, and Soul Elders 707.
- Soul Tools survive in ancient ruins, but research into their array patterns remains a niche pursuit because talented Soul Masters prioritize cultivation and Soul Rings 115.
- Medicine includes inherited pharmacological knowledge and practitioners who work outside the Martial Soul system, including military doctors 55.
Cultivation and Ecology
Martial Soul System
Conventional cultivation combines meditation, personal essence and spirit, and ambient energy to increase Soul Power. Every ten levels, a Soul Master ordinarily requires another Soul Ring to enter the next realm 354 456.
| Milestone | Significance |
|---|---|
| First Soul Ring | Advances a Soul Scholar into a One-Ring Soul Master and strengthens the body and meridians 84 354. |
| Three-Ring Soul Elder | The first major stage change in the system; suitable Soul Ring ages rise from the hundred-year to thousand-year range 150. |
| Five-Ring Soul King | The usual earliest opportunity to absorb a Ten Thousand Year Soul Ring. A Soul King can break through a thousand ordinary soldiers without comparable opposition 259. |
| Seven-Ring Soul Saint / Soul Sage | Unlocks Martial Soul Avatar and a qualitative change in spiritual power 259 456. |
| Nine-Ring Titled Douluo | Spiritual power transforms, enabling substantial use of external energy 354 560. |
| Level 95 and above | Advancement increasingly depends on spiritual realm and comprehension of attributes and intent 560. |
| Level 100 | The threshold of godhood 208 355. |
Cultivation speed depends on more than Innate Soul Power: Martial Soul quality, physique, meridians, spiritual strength, nutrition, and environment all matter. Advancement normally slows at higher realms, and insufficient mental strength can halt progress even when cultivation continues 63 259 606.
Soul Rings and Soul Beast Pressure
- Nearly ninety percent of Soul Masters are below the Three-Ring Soul Elder level, making low-ranking cultivators the largest source of demand for hunted Soul Rings 504.
- Before cultivated Blue Silver Grass rings became widespread, white ten-year first rings and yellow hundred-year third rings were normal configurations 531.
- Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Rings, External Soul Bones, and ordinary Soul Bones occupy the top three places in the Soul Master Dream Ranking 284.
- Ling Yi’s cultivated Blue Silver Grass provides rings with varied attributes. Its adoption is expected to reduce low-age Soul Beast hunting and preserve more beasts capable of reaching higher cultivation ages 504.
Transformed Soul Beasts
Hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts can transform into humans, losing their former strength and making their original bodies into Martial Souls. Their cultivation requires interaction with humans 208.
| Stage | Conditions |
|---|---|
| Infancy | Below Level 60; Soul Douluo and stronger experts can detect their Soul Beast identities 208. |
| Maturity | After Level 60; even Titled Douluo cannot identify their origins. From Level 70 onward, they must obtain hunted Soul Rings like humans 208. |
| Divine Transformation | Begins at Level 90, followed by the pursuit of Level 100 godhood 208. |
