History

Ancient Heavenly Court

During an ancient invasion by outsiders, the Heavenly Court and underworld stood at the front line. The Twenty-Eight Mansions deployed the Great Stellar Array by mobilizing their stars, while the Heavenly Venerable of Universal Thunderclap led the Thunder Department in invoking the Nine Heavens Thunder Tribulation for the first counterattack 270.

The Ancient Heavenly Court was regarded as the central authority of the Three Realms and a representative of the Heavenly Dao. Its military, technological, and organizational scale far exceeded that of later sects 621 766 767.

Following the destruction of the Demon Court and the witch race, Haotian Emperor rebuilt the Heavenly Court from nothing at the former site of the Ancient Demon Court. The reconstruction took several thousand years and was only roughly completed shortly before the Investiture of the Gods 720.

Investiture of the Gods and the New Heavenly Court

The Investiture of the Gods supplied the Heavenly Court with a major influx of personnel, as humanity’s explosive growth created an enormous pool of potential immortals and divine officials 670.

Haotian Emperor’s role in initiating the Investiture conflict left the Heavenly Court in a politically delicate position with the Human, Elucidation, and Interception Sects. Many of the strongest disciples of those sects were subsequently stationed in the Heavenly Court 541 579.

According to Perfected Taiyi, the Heavenly Court was not created to manually manage natural processes such as wind and rain. Its actual purpose was to bind, regulate, and control cultivators through rules and divine authority—effectively functioning as an “enormous cage” 1203.

Decline, Concealment, and Corruption

The “real” Heavenly Court was said to have hidden somewhere within the Mythical Realm after it could no longer be removed, while the identity of the surviving Heavenly Court remained uncertain enough for the underworld judge to question whether it was the “true” Heavenly Court 270 370.

By the time Li Su explored the Demon-Subduing Hall, the wider Ancient Heavenly Court had been corrupted and destroyed by an immense infestation of Evil Nature. The Immortal Prison was comparatively intact, retaining many ancient facilities and restrictions 767.

Evil Nature later erupted openly within the Heavenly Court, causing widespread corruption and casualties. Black Mountain Patriarch was exposed as an incarnation of Evil Nature during the crisis 1853.

Military Power

Heavenly Court Peerless Army Formation

The Peerless Army Formation was personally devised by Haotian Emperor after consultation with the Three Xiao Maidens and the Three Pure Ones. It integrates principles including the Three Talents, Four Symbols, Five Elements, Six Harmonies, Seven Stars, Eight Trigrams, and Nine Palaces 724.

  • It is considered the fourth supreme formation after the Zhou Tian Stellar Array, All-Heaven Baleful Array, and Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation 724.
  • With Haotian Emperor as its core and the Four Heavenly Emperors as its heart, it links heavenly gods above with ghost generals below 724.
  • A formation of ten can kill a True Immortal, while a formation of one hundred can kill an early-stage Taiyi cultivator 721.
  • A hundred-thousand-soldier version used the Four Symbols and Five Elements to pressure Li Su despite each soldier being individually weaker than him 724.

Desolate Heaven Boundless Formation

Created after Haotian Emperor recognized that the destroyed Demon Court and witch race possessed Saint-threatening arrays while the Heavenly Court did not, the Desolate Heaven Boundless Formation was developed over ten thousand years with guidance from the Three Pure Ones and the participation of Great Luo cultivators from the three Daoist sects 741.

  • It is centered on personnel rather than demanding rare artifacts or exceptionally powerful individual array cores 741.
  • It can compensate for insufficient individual quality with overwhelming numbers 741.
  • It is also known as the Heavenly Court military array 741.
  • It possesses the potential to contend with Saints 741.

Ancient Heavenly Soldiers and Generals

The ancient city within the Immortal Prison preserved a legion of one hundred thousand heavenly soldiers, each at perfected Celestial Immortal level, alongside one thousand thirteen-flame heavenly generals 724.

  • The soldiers operated as a single coordinated body through layered formations and battlefield maneuvers 724.
  • Their attacks hindered Dao circulation and overwhelmed most native opponents in only a few exchanges 724.
  • The heavenly generals were thirteen-flame geniuses—individuals who would be exceptional prodigies in the modern Mythical Realm, yet served as ordinary military officers in antiquity 724.
  • Their combat techniques possessed explosive power comparable to top-grade immortal arts while requiring comparatively less comprehension than modern high-level techniques 745.

Demon-Subduing Hall

The Demon-Subduing Hall is not merely a palace or tower. Its interior is a vast galaxy containing training grounds, teleportation arrays, stars, celestial stairways, and military infrastructure used to prepare heavenly soldiers and generals for war 766 767.

  • It functioned as the Ancient Heavenly Court’s armory and “Academy of Sciences” 767.
  • Large-scale war trials could involve millions of combatants and more than one hundred million personnel responsible for preparation and organization 766.
  • Becoming a Heavenly Court elite grants limited access to its information and cultivation methods 761.
  • The hall contains assessments for celestial soldiers, generals, and Imperial Guards 759 761.
  • An evil entity infiltrated the hall, consuming souls to extract grievance power and corrupting its main hall until Li Su drove it away 761 762.

Structure and Geography

Heavenly Palace

The Heavenly Court appears in the Eastern Domain as an immense palace floating at the edge of the world amid clouds and mist 508.

  • The South Heaven Gate stands before the Heavenly Palace and leads toward the central heavenly realms 986.
  • Thirty-three heavens layer behind the gate, surrounding the High Heaven Hall 986.
  • The High Heaven Hall contains inscriptions recording Dao arts associated with the Three Pure Ones, Four Sovereigns, Five Elders, Six Offices, Nine Luminaries, and other divine authorities 986.
  • A vast inverted galaxy lies beneath High Heaven, linking the heavens together 986.

Thirty-Six Heavens

The Heavenly Court includes the Thirty-Six Heavens, each of which is itself an immense grotto-heaven or treasure realm 1004 1330.

Division Known composition

Four Heavenly Gates

Haotian Emperor used the East, West, South, and North Heavenly Gates to divide and contain the Primordial World’s four outer star regions. External beings seeking entry to the Primordial World must pass through these gates 1104.

  • The South Heaven Gate governs access to the South Heaven Star Region 1104.
  • Its revival later displayed images of the Three Realms and drew large numbers of outer-realm beings toward the central region 1109.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Dragon Ship Incident

The Heavenly Court administered the Eastern Domain’s Long River transport routes and dispatched Taiyi cultivators from the Wind, Rain, and Thunder Departments to escort a valuable third-grade medicinal herb 711 716.

After the dragon ship was attacked, Heavenly Court Taiyi cultivators treated every passenger as a suspect and attempted to return the ship to the Heavenly Court for investigation 716. Li Su subdued several of these Taiyi cultivators, though he deliberately avoided grievously harming them 714 715.

Immortal Prison and Ancient City

The Heavenly Court contingent entered the Immortal Prison with Li Su after the dragon ship’s disappearance. The group discovered an Ancient Heavenly Court city containing preserved soldiers, generals, armor, and military formations 720 723.

Li Su fought the ancient legion, shattered the incomplete Peerless Army Formation, and defeated the one thousand heavenly generals after studying their techniques 724 725. The Heavenly Court elder later sought to purchase recovered Black Armor because of its connection to ancient military techniques and its value to the modern Heavenly Court 745.

Heavenly Palace Uproar

During the Journey to the West instance, Li Su entered the Heavenly Palace, fought Yang Jian and Nezha, defeated the Nine Luminaries and Thunder Department forces, and clashed with a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers and the Dragon King of the East Sea 986.

The Heavenly Court’s defenders used the Diamond Bracelet and their knowledge of the instance’s scripted events in an effort to kill Li Su, revealing the institution’s capacity for tracking and coordinated suppression 982 988.

Evil Nature Crisis

As conflict with foreign races escalated, Evil Nature infiltrated and erupted within the Heavenly Court. The crisis exposed Black Mountain Patriarch as an Evil Nature incarnation and caused massive corruption and casualties 1853.

The threat contributed to a temporary alignment between the Mythical Realm, foreign races, the Heavenly Court’s Four Sovereigns, and the surviving Demon Court Kings against a common existential danger 1852 1854.
