Yan Shaozhe serves as the Dean of Shrek Academy's Martial Soul Department and is a disciple of Sea God Pavilion Master Mu En. When he learns that a level 35 student has entered the freshman class, he rushes to investigate, only for Mu En to criticize his impatience and order him to let the student develop naturally. 9

After Zhou Yi's martial soul shatters during her duel with Lin Shuo, Yan Shaozhe takes control of the aftermath. He determines that Lin Shuo bears no responsibility, replaces Zhou Yi with Wang Yan, orders an investigation into Zhou Yi's past expulsions, and has the academy publicly attribute her condition to a hidden illness. He also seals Lin Shuo's records and convenes the Sea God Pavilion to discuss the unprecedented student. 12 13

Recognizing Lin Shuo's potential as vital to Shrek's future, Yan Shaozhe advocates retaining and nurturing him at the academy. He later presents Lin Shuo's championship team with a 60,000-year Ice Dragon torso bone, deliberately leaving the recipients to decide who will absorb it. 12 20 21

When Huo Yu'er awakens the Water Dragon King as a second martial soul, Yan Shaozhe identifies its possible connection to Lin Shuo's Seven-Colored Dragon King and calls another Sea God Pavilion meeting. He clashes with Qian Duoduo and Xian Lin'er over Huo Yu'er's status, seeking to preserve her place within the Martial Soul Department while the Soul Guidance Department seeks her participation in its Ultimate Soldier Plan. 35 36

Following Shrek's tournament victory, Yan Shaozhe welcomes the returning team, announces the Sea God Pavilion's rulings on the Mingdou Mountain Range mission, and presents rewards for the tournament participants and their leaders. 76 77

His immediate interest in Lin Shuo stems not only from the student's strength, but from Yan Shaozhe's belief that retaining such a genius could secure Shrek's position for centuries. 9 11 12

He is also decisive in administrative matters. He protects Lin Shuo from punishment after the Zhou Yi incident, suppresses sensitive information, and manages the academy's public explanation of the event. 12 13 However, his eagerness can become impatience; Mu En explicitly reprimands him for being too anxious to act on Lin Shuo's enrollment. 9

Yan Shaozhe is protective of the Martial Soul Department's influence. He strongly opposes the Soul Guidance Department's attempt to claim Huo Yu'er after her second martial soul awakens, even though the Sea God Pavilion ultimately grants her dual-core status. 36
