Background / History

Xuan Zi was present during the Sea God Pavilion’s deliberations over Lin Shuo’s unprecedented talent. As a Rank 98 Title Douluo with the Taotie Divine Ox martial soul, he initially volunteered to take Lin Shuo directly under his wing; Mu En instead ordered Xuan Zi and Yan Shaozhe to observe the boy without excessive intervention. 12 13

He later oversaw the selection of Shrek Academy’s reserve team through a no-rules twenty-eight-person melee. After Lin Shuo’s overwhelming dragon breath left only seven candidates, Xuan Zi named the survivors the reserve team and required weekly training sessions. 39 40

During an inspection mission against the Death Messenger, Xuan Zi remained outside the cave eating and drinking after judging the enemy’s strongest fighter to be only a Soul King. The Death Messenger’s corpse explosions severely injured the students; although Xuan Zi intervened, Lin Shuo ultimately killed the enemy. Overcome by guilt, Xuan Zi requested to resign as Vice Commander of the Shrek Inspection Group and withdraw from the Sea God Pavilion, acknowledging that his negligence had endangered the students. 46 47

Mu En subsequently assigned Xuan Zi to travel to Star Luo City with Zhang Lexuan while the reserve team competed in the All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament. He watched over the team from the shadows, drove off Body Sect members attempting to seize Huo Yu'er, and transported the champions back to Shrek Academy after the tournament. 48 51 69 76

Xuan Zi is a slovenly old man with untidy gray-white hair, clouded eyes, and an ever-present smell of wine. His outwardly drunken, unkempt bearing contrasts sharply with the pressure he exerts as a Rank 98 Super Douluo. 51 69

Despite this carelessness, he is deeply concerned for Shrek’s students. After the Death Messenger incident, he personally examined the injured team members and accepted responsibility for failing them. His request to resign stemmed from guilt rather than an attempt to evade blame. 46 47

He places high value on combat readiness and survival. When selecting the reserve team, he emphasized that Inner Court disciples must be prepared for genuine life-and-death situations rather than assuming the academy will always protect them. 40
