Background / History

Konoha Anbu pursuit

Itachi served as a young member of Hatake Kakashi’s Anbu squad during the pursuit of Hyuuga Nen. He objected when Kakashi initially chose not to immediately capture the unidentified Hyuga clansman, considering the apparent leak of Hyuga bloodline abilities a threat to Konoha 28.

During the chase, Itachi deployed crow summons, wire-guided Uchiha shurikenjutsu, genjutsu, and shadow clones. Nen’s Contract Seal dispelled both his crow summoning and genjutsu, while the Byakugan made his usual feints ineffective 29 33. Itachi nevertheless protected his squadmates, using a smoke bomb to create an opening and evacuating an injured Anbu 33.

Kakashi and Itachi were ultimately overwhelmed by Nen’s superior speed, chakra, and Gentle Fist techniques. Nen sealed their acupoints, bound them, and left a Sealing Formula on Itachi’s arm; Itachi suffered severe abdominal bruising and broken limbs 34 36. He blamed himself for having advocated the pursuit 36.

During the later large-scale battle against Nen, Akimichi Shidou shielded Itachi and Nara Suzaku from an explosion at the cost of his life. Itachi lost an arm and responded to Suzaku’s concern with visible emotional numbness 42.

Uchiha clan destruction

Itachi reported the Uchiha clan’s imminent coup to Konoha’s leadership, stating that the clan intended to act within two days 70. He accepted the mission to eliminate his own clan after Hiruzen Sarutobi ordered a preemptive strike 70.

During the massacre, Itachi had awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. Despite fighting with one arm missing, he defeated Hyuga Shun using black flames and a gray-white defensive barrier that trapped and bound his opponent 71. He later disclosed that he and the man calling himself “Madara” had massacred the clan together 99.

Afterward, Itachi warned Hyuuga Nen—then posing as Danzō—not to harm Sasuke, threatening to expose Konoha’s secrets if Sasuke were endangered 72.

Akatsuki membership

Itachi joined Akatsuki shortly after the massacre and immediately confronted Hyuuga Nen over Danzō’s death and Hyuga Shun’s fate 73. Seeking to recover Shisui Uchiha’s eyes, he accepted “Madara’s” offer to probe Nen’s abilities, leading to their public spar 74.

During the operation against Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura, Itachi deliberately held back under “Madara’s” orders, hoping to force Nen to reveal his strength. Afterward, he concealed the scheme and protected Kisame from suspicion, but Nen’s Yin Release Clone uncovered the deception 85 86.

Itachi later accompanied Nen to recruit Deidara, defeating the Iwagakure rogue with genjutsu that had trapped him from the beginning of their encounter 89. He also repelled Orochimaru’s attempt to seize his eyes, returning with Orochimaru’s severed arm 90.

Alliance with Hyuuga Nen

Nen revealed that Hiruzen had ordered the Uchiha massacre, prompting Itachi to acknowledge that his own weakness, arrogance, and belief that he could control fate had contributed to the tragedy 87 99.

When Itachi discovered that Nen possessed Shisui’s eyes, he offered any service within his power to reclaim them. Nen used this leverage to expose Itachi’s role as Obito’s spy and secure intelligence on “Madara” 98 99. Itachi ultimately agreed to assist Nen against Obito, receiving a spare Sharingan grafted onto his back so he could use a forbidden ocular technique without sacrificing one of his own eyes 114.

Personality

Itachi is serious, observant, and highly mission-focused. As an Anbu member, he prioritized Konoha’s security strongly enough to challenge Kakashi’s cautious decision-making during Nen’s pursuit 28. In battle, he continuously analyzes opponents’ advantages, searching for weaknesses even when faced with an enemy who renders his genjutsu and deception ineffective 33.

The Uchiha massacre and Shidou’s sacrifice left him increasingly detached. His numb response after losing an arm and witnessing Shidou’s death contrasts with the intense guilt he later expresses over failing both his clan and village 42 70. He admits that he was “weak, yet arrogant and foolish,” believing himself capable of seeing through fate while being manipulated by others 99.
