Power Progression

Background / History

The Byakugan is the Hyuga Clan's ocular bloodline limit. Alongside the Uchiha Clan's ocular inheritance, it is associated with one of Konoha's strongest clans. Its value makes it a frequent target of outside interest and a strategic concern for Konoha. 9 28 30

The Hyuga Main House uses the Caged Bird seal to control Branch House members. The seal can destroy a bearer’s brain and Byakugan, ostensibly preventing the bloodline from falling into outsiders’ hands; in practice, it is depicted as a tool of Branch House subjugation. 1

Hyuga Shun concealed Hyuga Nen's Byakugan with a personal seal and warned him never to reveal the eye or accept the Caged Bird seal. Nen later releases the seal and begins independently testing and developing the Byakugan’s capabilities. 8 10

Appearance

When unsealed, the Byakugan turns Nen's eyes a pale, deathly white. Activation causes veins to bulge around the eyes. 10

Enhanced Vision

The Byakugan greatly expands its user's visual range and environmental awareness.

• Enhances vision in darkness and allows Nen to distinguish details several kilometers away. 10
• Can observe targets through physical obstacles by adjusting its perspective. 10
• Provides a three-hundred-sixty-degree field of vision, allowing Nen to evade attacks from behind without looking back. 26
• Can observe movement underground when a target's chakra signature is detectable. 10 32

Chakra Network Perception

The Byakugan can perceive chakra circulation, meridians, acupoints, and internal abnormalities beyond the surface-level chakra vision of the Sharingan. 10 79

• Lets Nen view his own chakra flow, meridians, and acupoints. 10
• Allows close inspection of internal muscle cells, supporting his Cell Activation Forbidden Technique research. 15

By observing chakra flow, Nen can analyze the execution of other ninja techniques, though successful replication still depends on whether he can perform the technique himself. 41 79

• The Byakugan can reveal chakra circulation throughout an opponent's body, enabling Nen to study ninjutsu principles. 41
• Fast-activating techniques can exceed its ability to observe chakra flow in real time. 79
• Nen inscribes the Image Recording Technique into his left eye, allowing the active Byakugan to record chakra movements for later study and replication. 53

Dojutsu Power

Nen discovers that the Byakugan contains a large reserve of dormant Dojutsu Power that he initially cannot access or use outside of activation. 78 79

• Its dormant power is compared to an iceberg: only a small accessible portion can initially be mobilized. 79
• The Byakugan's Dojutsu Power provides little benefit to genjutsu compared with its other applications. 80
• Nen determines that Dojutsu Power infused into a Finger Pistol can disrupt another person's ocular-jutsu activation; he believes Byakugan Dojutsu Power would produce the same effect as the Sharingan power used in his test. 80

Limitations

• Initial activation causes extreme pain and temporary blindness. 10
