Background / History

Kisame graduated during Kirigakure’s Bloody Mist era, killing a classmate on graduation day. He later served in a squad that hunted alleged traitors before entering the Anbu under Suikazan Fuguki. On Fuguki’s orders, Kisame killed comrades and other targets in the name of protecting Kirigakure, only to discover that Fuguki himself had been selling the village’s secrets. Kisame killed Fuguki, inherited Samehada, and was left unable to distinguish loyalty from deception. 100 102

After learning that the Fourth Mizukage, Karatachi Yagura, was himself a puppet, Kisame accepted “Madara’s” Eye of the Moon Plan. He aided Madara’s control over Yagura and infiltrated Akatsuki as Madara’s agent, gathering intelligence on Hyuuga Nen after being placed on Nen’s team. 88 90 102

During the mission involving Yagura, Kisame initially posed as a reserve Akatsuki member while secretly reporting the infiltrators to the Mizukage. He then betrayed Yagura in the decisive battle, using Samehada to drain the Three-Tails Jinchuriki’s chakra and helping Itachi incapacitate him. Hyuuga Nen’s Yin Release Clone subsequently exposed Kisame’s connection to Madara. 84 86

Nen deliberately proposed Kisame as his new partner in order to investigate Tobi’s network. Kisame used their sparring sessions and daily interactions to probe Nen’s abilities, but Nen also watched Kisame closely and resolved to judge him by his eventual choice. 90 93 99

Unable to resolve his guilt and uncertainty alone, Kisame confessed his past to Nen. Nen and Itachi then created a modified genjutsu, Tsukuyomi, to make Kisame confront his memories and repeated choices. Inside the illusion, Kisame accepted his past rather than escaping into Madara’s promised world and rejected Madara’s offer. 100 103

After awakening, Kisame disclosed his relationship with Madara to Pain and Konan. Pain accepted his loyalty, and Kisame volunteered to monitor Madara while avoiding suspicion. 104
