Background / History

Pain leads an early, understaffed Akatsuki during its dormant phase. He recruits Kakuzu personally and uses the organization’s rings to contact and monitor members, detecting Kakuzu’s near-fatal defeat by Hyuuga Nen. Rather than allowing Kakuzu to pursue revenge, Pain orders him to leak Nen’s identity through the black market, using pursuit by the Five Great Nations as a test of Nen’s strength and suitability for recruitment. 31

When Obito Uchiha, posing as “Madara,” objects to recruiting a Byakugan user, Pain dismisses the concern. He considers Nen valuable because Akatsuki lacks manpower and believes the Rinnegan leaves prospective traitors unable to resist him. Before the recruitment, Pain and Konan arrange for the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to be concealed more deeply underground from Nen’s Byakugan. 46

Pain personally confronts Nen at the Loulan Ruins and forces him into Akatsuki through overwhelming force. He then brings Nen to the Land of Rain, where the organization already controls part of the country despite Hanzō’s remaining rule in Amegakure. 48 49

Despite his godlike confidence, Pain is a capable strategist rather than a reckless fighter.
