Personality

Kakuzu is openly money-driven and impatient with anyone delaying payment. At the Bounty Exchange, he demands his reward immediately, checks the bills individually, and intimidates the manager into surrendering a confidential file. His financial priorities persist during Akatsuki operations: he regrets being unable to collect Hanzo’s bounty and loses interest in Hidan when told the mission is recruitment rather than a paid killing 22 52 106.

He treats suitable opponents as prospective replacement hearts. His pursuit of Hyuuga Nen combines greed with enjoyment of a “cat-and-mouse” confrontation, leading him to watch Nen perform unfamiliar hand seals rather than interrupt him. After his defeat, he recognizes that attacking without sufficient intelligence was reckless, but remains determined to take Nen’s heart 24 31.

Despite his hostility toward fellow members, Kakuzu restrains himself when Pain or Konan intervenes. He reluctantly accepts orders to investigate Nen, abandons an argument after Konan’s warning, and agrees to work alongside Nen when Pain explicitly commands it 31 51 106.

History

Pursuit of Hyuuga Nen

Kakuzu first encounters Nen at the Bounty Exchange in the Land of Sea, where Nen is operating as the wandering samurai “Shinji.” After collecting a bounty, Kakuzu forces the manager to hand over Shinji’s file and marks him as a candidate for a spare heart. Nen judges Kakuzu too dangerous to fight and leaves the country. Kakuzu initially postpones the pursuit because he is not short of hearts 22.

They meet again in the Land of Tea, where Kakuzu is visibly wearing Akatsuki’s cloak. He connects two of Nen’s identities, questions his disguise technique, and announces that he wants his heart. By allowing Nen to complete unfamiliar hand seals, Kakuzu gives him time to prepare for combat 24.

During the battle, Kakuzu destroys Nen’s katana and uses masked monsters to prevent his escape. His elemental barrage forces Nen to use Rotation, exposing his true appearance and Byakugan. Kakuzu notices the absence of a Caged Bird mark and recognizes the value of selling information about this unusual Hyuga clansman 25.

Nen ultimately breaks Kakuzu’s restraints, strikes him with three consecutive Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palms, pierces his eye with a delayed Wind Senbon, and shatters his organs with Gentle Fist: Maximum Rotation. One masked monster escapes underground, and the arrival of Konoha Anbu prevents Nen from finishing him off 27.

Survival and the Intelligence Leak

Still alive but reduced to one heart, Kakuzu attempts to take an Anbu member’s heart. When the attack fails, he reveals Nen’s unmarked forehead and false identities to divert the team’s attention. Kakashi allows him to escape and instead begins pursuing Nen 28.

Kakuzu repairs himself in an abandoned village using hearts taken from several victims. Pain contacts him, reprimands his recklessness, and orders him to investigate Nen for possible recruitment. Following Pain’s instructions, Kakuzu sells Nen’s intelligence to the black market and collects a substantial bounty; the resulting pursuit is intended to test Nen’s qualifications for Akatsuki 31 48.

Akatsuki Service and Continuing Rivalry

Nen’s eventual recruitment does not end their hostility. Kakuzu confronts him at the base after learning that Nen has also sold information about him to the black market. Konan stops the argument and warns both men that members may not harm one another 51.

Kakuzu participates in the assault on Amegakure, killing numerous ninja with wide-range ninjutsu and fighting Hanzo alongside Sasori. Afterward, Pain temporarily pairs Kakuzu with Sasori to investigate Sunagakure’s jinchuriki. Kakuzu also disputes ownership of Hanzo’s corpse with Sasori and Orochimaru 52 53 54.

While impersonating Danzo, Nen falsely tells Hiruzen that Kakuzu and an accomplice were responsible for the attack on him. Kakuzu was not the attacker; Nen uses his reputation as a bounty hunter as a cover story 61 67.

Hidan Recruitment and Iwagakure Commission

Pain later assigns Kakuzu and Nen to recruit Hidan. Kakuzu objects to working with Nen, but obeys after a warning; Konan accompanies them specifically to prevent conflict 106.

During the encounter, Kakuzu interrupts Tobi’s unsuccessful fighting and twice pierces Hidan’s chest with Tentacle Fist. Hidan secretly obtains his blood and uses Heart Piercing to destroy one of Kakuzu’s hearts. Kakuzu nevertheless stands again, surprising Hidan, who then flees after noticing Nen’s Byakugan 108.

Kakuzu subsequently brings Pain an Iwagakure commission requesting Nen’s capture with his Byakugan intact. He argues against rejecting Akatsuki’s first commission from a Great Nation. Pain instead proposes a tracking mission, and Konan directs Kakuzu to negotiate the change with Iwagakure 120.
