Background / History

Three years after the Nine-Tails incident, the Uchiha were suspected because the masked attacker was believed to be “Uchiha Madara.” Their absence from the village’s response deepened Konoha’s distrust and contributed to the conditions leading toward the clan’s predicted annihilation. At the beginning of the story, fewer than four years remain before that event. 1

The clan resides on Konoha’s outskirts, an arrangement Ryosuke views as marginalization rather than convenience. Its members are socially distant even among themselves, while Uchiha children and adults alike face open suspicion from other villagers. 8 9 10 34 36

Uchiha Fugaku directs the clan toward greater political and military influence. He pressures Ryosuke to join the Police Force, offers to make him a foster son, and later orders him to pursue Anbu membership as part of the clan’s intelligence efforts. 13 31

At a secret Ise Shrine gathering, Fugaku and other members discuss the possibility of war with the Land of Lightning as an opportunity for the clan. The meeting frames intelligence gathering, the awakening of more Three-Tomoe Sharingan users, and eventual influence within Konoha as priorities. 31

The clan’s growing dissatisfaction is known to Itachi and exploited by “Madara,” who warns that the end of the Cloud conflict may bring a complete break between the Uchiha and Konoha. 32 39

Society and Organization

• Uchiha Police Force — The clan’s police organization. Its members are involved in clan security and intelligence collection; Fugaku expects Ryosuke to enter it after becoming a Chunin. 13 31
• Uchiha Shrine — A heavily guarded clan site containing statues of Izanami and Susanoo, as well as a basement stone tablet accessible in full only to Three-Tomoe Sharingan users. 12

Traits and Reputation

The Sharingan is the Uchiha’s defining dōjutsu. It may awaken during severe emotional fluctuations; not every clan member possesses it, and Three-Tomoe users are considered especially valuable. 1 3 31

The clan is feared both inside and outside Konoha because of its eyes. Kumogakure operatives attempt to abduct Uchiha and Hyuga children for their dōjutsu, while Danzo openly covets Sharingan and treats Uchiha operatives as disposable assets. 1 2 32 37

The clan’s isolation and its members’ increasingly militant response reinforce this divide. Fugaku sees war as an opportunity, while some younger Uchiha, including Sanhe, want to improve the clan’s status by gaining political authority such as the Hokage position. 31 34
