Background / History
Shota and his younger sister, Megumi, left their classroom to seek out Zhao Yun Zilong, whom they wanted as a teammate. After learning that Zeyu Nichiro was Zhao Yun Zilong, the siblings were assigned alongside him under Nana, forming Team 11. 11 12 13
During Nana's bell test, Shota and Megumi demonstrated strong sibling coordination: Shota restrained Nana while Megumi launched a Wind Style attack. Nana escaped through substitution, sending Shota into the pond, but judged the siblings talented and well coordinated. 12
After witnessing Zeyu seize both bells and recalling his submission of a giant bear, Shota accepted the immense difference in their strength. He resolved to train, seek Zeyu's instruction, and become stronger. 13 14 15
Shota participated in the Forest of Death with Team 11. His eagerness to fight repeatedly put him at risk, including when he charged three Grass ninja and failed to notice shuriken aimed at his blind spot; Megumi intercepted the attack. 22 After seeing Zeyu's Lightning Armor, he formally began calling Zeyu “Big Brother” and asked to become his follower. 23 26
Personality
Shota is intensely battle-loving and often seeks a fight before judging the danger involved. He challenged Naruto out of boredom, wanted to fight Gaara despite Zeyu's warnings, and eagerly pursued the Grass ninja during the Forest of Death exam. 11 22
He is highly enthusiastic about strength and flashy techniques, particularly those used by Zeyu. Zeyu's Lightning Armor inspired him to train harder, while later encounters led him to request instruction in additional techniques, including the Rasengan. 23 26 58 92
Despite his impulsiveness, Shota is loyal and protective. He shielded Megumi when Zeyu's intimidating presence unsettled her, defended Zeyu after Tenten called him “small fry,” and prioritized carrying ramen entrusted to him even when it burned his hands. 13 33 37
Abilities & Skills
Earth Style
Shota's primary documented techniques are Earth Style ninjutsu, which he combines with direct close-range pressure.
- Rock Fist Technique — Encases his fist in stone to reinforce strikes and defend against weapons. His improved technique shattered after clashing with Zeyu's punch, leaving his hand numb. 15
- Mud Bullet — Fires stones that enlarge in mid-air toward a target. 22
- Earth Wall — Raises an earthen barrier from the ground to block incoming attacks; he used it against Megumi's Great Breakthrough. 39
- Clay Clone — Creates an earth-based clone that can trap an opponent when struck. Shota used one to immobilize Megumi's arm, but her own clone defeated him before he could capitalize. 39
Taijutsu
Shota favors close-quarters combat and has trained extensively with Zeyu.
- Sparred with Zeyu for more than twenty exchanges and continued training after receiving praise for his improvement. 15
- Uses Rock Fist to supplement his punches and break through weapon defenses. 39
- His aggressive fighting style leaves openings; Megumi exploited this during their preliminary match. 39
Summoning Jutsu
Shota can summon a giant bear marked with the Mochizuki clan's crescent-moon crest.
- He rides the bear and proudly presented it at the Mochizuki estate's training ground. 53
- The summon is powerful enough that Zeyu asked Shota's permission before sparring with it. 53
Physical and Mental Training
- Practices meditation on Zeyu's recommendation to improve focus and chakra control, and explained the method to Kiba and Shino. 28
- Pursues strenuous strength training to keep pace with Zeyu, including weighted push-ups. 32 58
Relationships
- Zeyu Nichiro — Teammate, mentor figure, and the person Shota acknowledges as his “Big Brother.” Shota admires Zeyu's strength, repeatedly seeks his instruction, and is fiercely defensive of him. 14 26 33 92
- Mochizuki Megumi — Younger sister and frequent rival. They coordinate effectively in battle, but Megumi regularly scolds Shota's recklessness and defeated him in the Chunin preliminaries. 12 22 39
- Mochizuki Rin — Elder sister connected to the Mochizuki estate and family livestock business. She disciplines Shota after learning he publicly held Megumi upside down. 53 61
- Nana — Team 11's jonin instructor. Her bell test established Shota and Megumi's combat coordination and led to their team entering the Chunin Exams. 12 13
- Hyuga Hinata — Zeyu's romantic partner, whom Shota calls “Sister-in-law.” He joins the others in defending her and Zeyu from Shukaku. 29
- Thunder and Fire — Mochizuki household guards who encourage Shota's physical training and enforce Rin's discipline. 58 61
Story Role / Major Arcs
Team 11 Formation
Shota sought Zeyu out as Zhao Yun Zilong, joined Team 11 with Megumi, and participated in Nana's bell test. Zeyu's overwhelming performance motivated Shota to pursue strength more seriously. 11 12 13
Chunin Exams
During the Forest of Death, Shota's aggression created openings that Megumi had to cover. He later adopted Zeyu as his “Big Brother,” learned meditation, and trained to emulate Zeyu's techniques. 22 23 26 28
Shota faced Megumi in the preliminary tournament. He used Earth Style, an Earth Wall, and a Clay Clone to set a trap, but Megumi's own clone outmaneuvered him and knocked him unconscious. 39
Mochizuki Estate
At the Mochizuki estate, Shota introduced Zeyu to his giant bear summon and watched Zeyu spar with it. He was impressed by Zeyu's willingness to risk himself while helping the family capture the Giant Eagle and later evacuating injured guards during the Meatball incident. 53 54 56
Later Training
Shota continued intense physical training to keep up with Zeyu. When Zeyu and Hinata later visited the estate to discuss a business partnership, Shota immediately used the occasion to ask Zeyu to teach him the Rasengan. 58 92
