Background / History

Kakashi is present during Naruto and Sasuke’s final confrontation, where he reacts with shock to Sasuke’s intention to execute the Five Kage and control the Tailed Beasts. When Sasuke kills Zeyu, Kakashi agrees to bury him and care for the incapacitated Sakura while Naruto pursues Sasuke. Zeyu’s death particularly affects Kakashi because he recognizes the value of Zeyu’s intelligence work in saving lives and identifying enemy weaknesses. 1 2

After the new timeline begins, Kakashi becomes the instructor of Zeyu, Shota, and Megumi Mochizuki’s team. Though notably late and disheveled when he first collects them, he observes Zeyu closely as the latter displays increasingly exceptional abilities. 11 15

Kakashi’s suspicions deepen after witnessing Zeyu use the Rasengan, discovering a marked kunai resembling Minato’s Flying Thunder God kunai, and finding scrolls in Zeyu’s home that document Chidori derivatives. Rather than expose Zeyu, Kakashi works alongside him, Genma, Hayate, and Elephant to investigate Orochimaru and Danzō’s plans.
