History

During the escalating conflicts among the great villages, Kondo Takashi placed Mist Village on a war footing. He accelerated the training of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, cultivated Utakata as the Six-Tails Jinchuriki, and treated the village's military expansion as necessary preparation for a rapidly destabilizing Ninja World 71.

Mist Village first intervened directly in the wider resource conflict by ambushing a returning Cloud Village fleet near the Land of Water. Its force held the advantage at sea, fielding roughly 2,000 ninja against a Cloud contingent of about 1,700. Kondo engaged the Third Raikage while Kagura Yagura fought Yugito Nii in a partial Tailed Beast transformation 103. The operation captured a Cloud ship carrying gold and metal ores valued at approximately 10 billion ryō, prompting Kondo to prioritize the Sand Village's gold mines 107.

Early attempts to gather intelligence from Sunagakure's coast were costly. A Mist reconnaissance force broke through a defensive formation but was defeated by Ye Yu and Katsuyu; its leaders Kikushi and Jōmei were killed, and the village's reports later described the area as the “Sea of Death” 110 111 114.

Major Arcs

Conflict with the Cloud Village

Mist Village ambushed the Cloud Village fleet at sea and fought a large naval engagement against the Third Raikage’s retreating army 103. The Seven Ninja Swordsmen confronted Ay, but six were swiftly defeated before Suigetsu Hōzuki used Samehada to heal allies and support a Hidden Mist counterattack 104.

Despite this hostility, Mist Village later sought an alliance with Cloud Village. The agreement required Mist Village to pay 50 tons of gold, including an initial 10-ton payment, and dispatch 1,000 ninja to support an attack on the Leaf Village 177. The partnership remained driven by mutual advantage and mistrust; it later dissolved as Mist Village withdrew while Cloud Village prepared to continue acting independently 217.

Invasion of the Sand Village

Yagura's forces launched a large-scale surprise assault on the Land of Wind. Utakata used bubbles to move approximately 5,000 ninja through the air, while smaller squads cleared outposts and secured the route of retreat 194. Mist forces seized gold mines, infiltrated Sunagakure in Sand Village uniforms, and used the Seven Ninja Swordsmen and Kaguya Brothers to eliminate defenders and capture key targets 194 195.

The operation encountered major setbacks when Ye Yu, the Seven-Tails Jinchuriki, repelled Mist forces and rescued Bunpuku. The attempt to control the One-Tails Jinchuriki failed, and more than a thousand Mist ninja were lost during the campaign 206 208.

Yagura nevertheless secured the campaign's material objective. Mist Village collected roughly 900 tons of gold—far beyond its planned goal of just over 100 tons—and withdrew before Sunagakure could mount a full counterattack 212.

Attack on the Leaf Village

Mist Village opened its offensive against the Leaf Village by using coastal fog to infiltrate and destroy Leaf outposts while their defenders slept 183. It later committed its full army and Jinchuriki to assault the Leaf Village’s main camp, bombarding defensive barriers with Tailed Beast Bombs 221.

Kondo Takashi personally fought Jiraiya and Orochimaru, employing Ice Style techniques and imprisoning them within Ice Age World, an ice palace that rapidly drained chakra 221. The Seven Ninja Swordsmen also devastated Leaf forces until Might Duy opened the Eight Gates and overwhelmed them 228.
