History

Rain Campaign and Sand Village Invasion

Leaf Village began preparing to intervene in the Land of Rain while Amegakure was already skirmishing with Sand Village forces. Hiruzen dispatched his three disciples—Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade—to lead the campaign, with Orochimaru serving as commander. 4 13

The invading force suffered logistical shortages, and some Leaf ninja violated Hiruzen's prohibition against plundering civilians. One such squad mistakenly killed Nagato's parents, contributing to Nagato's awakening of the Rinnegan. 13

While the Leaf army was committed in the Land of Rain, Sand Village launched a three-pronged offensive into the Land of Fire. The Third Kazekage attacked from the center, Bunpuku advanced from the south, and Chiyo and Chiyojuro's route served as a diversion. 16 18

Sand Village breached Leaf Village's defenses, severely injured Hiruzen, and sent Bunpuku into the village in One-Tails form. Civilians had been evacuated, limiting casualties, but the village sustained extensive structural damage. 19 20

Hiruzen favored negotiating peace to preserve the depleted village, while Danzō rejected compromise and led a costly suicidal raid against the Sand camp. Sand Village ultimately declined to press its advantage, fearing its own losses and intervention by other villages. 20

Cloud Village Abduction Incident

Cloud and Mist Village infiltrators simultaneously attacked the Uchiha and Hyuga compounds to seize their kekkei genkai. Leaf Village responded within twenty minutes and repelled the attackers, but numerous clan members were captured. 83

Cloud Village claimed it had taken 56 Hyuga and 47 Uchiha prisoners, intending to exploit the Byakugan and Sharingan for reconnaissance and military development. 83

Hiruzen publicly delayed negotiations with the Cloud envoy while secretly preparing a retaliatory operation. A week later, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Nara Kazuya, Minato, Uchiha Fugaku, Hyuga Hiashi, and other Leaf ninja struck Cloud Village, rescued the captives, destroyed facilities, and eliminated ninja modified with transplanted Sharingan. 84 85

Many rescued Uchiha had already had their eyes removed by the time the Leaf force reached them. 85

Alliance with Sand Village

After suffering repeated invasions and seeking protection for its gold mines, Sand Village requested a formal alliance. Leaf Village agreed to provide military support in exchange for 30 tons of gold. 169

The agreement made Leaf Village responsible for reinforcing Sand Village against attacks by Stone, Mist, or Cloud Village for one year. 169

Multi-Front War

Mist Village began the wider conflict with fog-covered raids on Leaf coastal camps, killing sleeping guards and clearing multiple outposts through surprise attacks. 183

Leaf forces later withdrew from a major engagement against the Allied Forces after suffering 356 confirmed deaths: 26 Jonin, 83 Special Jonin, and 247 Chunin. Minato, Kushina, Uchiha Fugaku, and Hyuga Hiashi all encountered high-level enemy combatants during the retreat. 189

Stone Village then captured a Leaf forward camp and converted it into a permanent foothold. Its subsequent offensive overwhelmed Leaf border defenses, killed Koharu and Homura, and forced Hiruzen to prepare for fighting inside the village itself. 193 216

Stone Village's main invasion breached the Leaf's gates with colossal rock constructs and Tailed Beast Bombs. Roshi targeted the Hyuga compound, killing clan members and collecting Byakugan. 218
