Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma enhancement 36 88 Consuming the herb increases his soul power. Later passages confirm that his martial soul’s poison no longer backfires on him; no new numerical level or martial-soul evolution is documented.

Early Mysterious Jade Hand proficiency 100 Has made progress with the technique after several days of practice.

Background / History

The Dugu family’s inherited snake martial soul carries a congenital defect that causes its own toxins to attack the user. Dugu Bo’s poisoning has spread throughout his body by the time he meets Lan Yu. The same backlash killed his son and daughter-in-law, leaving Dugu Yan as his only remaining blood relative 35 59.

Before meeting Lan Yu, Dugu Bo entered a reciprocal arrangement with Ye Renxin: Ye Renxin suppressed his poison, while Dugu Bo protected the Nine Heart Begonia lineage after the Blue Silver Sacred Heart Sect withdrew from public life 61.

Dugu Bo controls the medicinal garden surrounding the Love-Hate Yin-Yang Well in Sunset Forest. Despite possessing valuable herbs, he lacks the knowledge to use them effectively against his condition. He permits Lan Yu to harvest them and offers the entire garden if that will resolve his and Dugu Yan’s poisoning 35.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, thin, and elderly 34.
  • Hair and beard: Deep ink-green at his introduction; later passages describe his beard and hair as white or grizzled 34 60 66.
  • Eyes: Sharp emerald eyes 34.
  • Voice and presence: A raspy voice and a faint aura surrounding his body 34.
  • Combat manifestation: An enormous jade-green Snake Emperor, which he also rides when arriving at Heaven Dou Academy 54 55.

Personality

Dugu Bo initially approaches Lan Yu with suspicion, testing his defenses with poison and questioning his abilities. Once convinced of Lan Yu’s knowledge and character, he quickly abandons formal distance. He welcomes the nickname “Old Poison,” calls Lan Yu “Little Monster,” and repeatedly jokes about Lan Yu’s relationship with Tang Shan 34 35 41.

His granddaughter takes priority over his own advancement. When told that the Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma has limited benefits for powerful soul masters, he initially chooses to save it for Dugu Yan. Threats against her—or reminders of his deceased son and daughter-in-law—can drive him to expend his strongest resources without restraint 35 59.

His confidence grows sharply after defeating stronger opponents with amplified poison. He enjoys taunting Yu Yuanzhen and Yue Guan, but that confidence sometimes becomes poor judgment: he dismisses the Three-Eyed Golden Lion because of her size and is immediately knocked away. His resentment toward She Long and Chi Xue likewise overrides his tactics during the Demon Bear battle 55 69 83 115.

Dugu Bo is also an eager learner. The Poison Scripture fascinates him so completely that he stops conversing to study it. His mischievous competitiveness persists outside battle, including pinning Ye Renxin down to claim the first chance to test a new pill 88 101.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Expertise

  • Specializes in poisoning and detoxification, with extensive practical knowledge of medicinal ingredients 100.
  • Releases corrosive mist, poison beams, and fine poisonous threads. His mist withers vegetation, while his threads can incapacitate attacking ten-thousand-year soul beasts 55 58 68.
  • Is feared for his ability to devastate a sect’s weaker members even when its strongest cultivator survives 39.
  • His original poison backlash stems from a martial-soul defect, rather than simple mishandling of poison 35.

Documented Soul Skills

Skill Number Applications and Limits
Jade Phosphor Snake Emperor Poison Fourth Fires concentrated emerald poison beams. With Snow Swan Kiss amplification, these corrode Yu Yuanzhen’s defenses and flesh 55.
Jade Phosphor Snake Emperor Avatar Seventh Manifests his enormous Snake Emperor combat form; also called “True Body” in later passages 55 59.
Time Solidification Eighth Used alongside Medusa’s Gaze to immobilize opponents and drastically slow the opening of Yu Yuanzhen’s spatial escape route. The combined attack includes mental poison that freezes the soul 59.
Jade Phosphor Divine Light Ninth Draws out his stored snake venom into an emerald beam. Amplified a thousandfold by the Snow Swan Kiss, it dissolves Yu Yuanzhen’s shield and destroys his left side 59.

Medusa’s Gaze

  • Releases two petrification beams from the Snake Emperor’s eyes 59.
  • Used with Time Solidification to seal the body while mental poison restrains the soul 59.
  • The combined restraint is overcome when Yu Yuanzhen activates the Nine True Dragon Crowns 59.

Movement and Physical Combat

  • Uses rapid movement and aerial travel to transport Lan Yu and intercept opponents 34 104.
  • Relies on speed to evade direct attacks and repeatedly apply poison against physically stronger enemies 55 115.
  • His Titled Douluo physique alone is sufficient to overwhelm the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s Soul Douluos without using his avatar or poison 129.

Tang Sect Techniques and Hidden Weapons

  • Studies the Poison Scripture copied from the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 88.
  • Learns the Mysterious Jade Hand and the crafting methods for Yama’s Invitation, Pursuing Soul-Chasing Life-Taking Galls, and other toxic hidden weapons 88.
  • Later uses Pursuing Soul-Chasing Life-Taking Galls in battle 115.

Limits and Weaknesses

  • Initially has a reputation as the weakest Titled Douluo in individual combat; close-range encounters with powerful assault-type opponents are particularly unfavorable 55.
  • Snow Swan Kiss amplification is a consumable advantage. His decisive attack against Yu Yuanzhen exhausts his soul power and uses up the herb, leaving him unable to eliminate the two other Titled Douluos present 59.
  • Demon Bear retains the advantage in their direct confrontation despite suffering from corrosive poison 115.
  • His perception is fallible: a Heavenly Eye Dragon Ape evades his senses and ambushes Lan Yu while he is guarding the group 65 66.
  • Poison expertise does not make him an alchemist. Before Lan Yu’s pill experiments, his medicinal preparation is limited to combining, mashing, and boiling compatible herbs 100.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Snow Swan Kiss — Nonpoisonous immortal herb that magnifies poisons it touches a hundredfold to a thousandfold. Dugu Bo first uses a petal, then consumes its remaining power in his decisive strike against Yu Yuanzhen 55 59.
  • Wishful Hundred Treasure Pouch — Storage pouch used to carry the herb and recovered soul bone. He later gives it to Lan Yu and refuses to take it back 55 60 100.
  • Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma — Consumed to address his martial soul’s innate deficiency and poison backlash 35 36 88.
  • Poison Scripture — Lan Yu’s handwritten copy of the poison knowledge in the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 88.
  • Pursuing Soul-Chasing Life-Taking Galls — Toxic hidden weapons deployed against She Long and Chi Xue 115.
  • Thunder Cloud Rampart left arm bone — A 58,000-year defensive soul bone recovered after crippling Yu Yuanzhen. Dugu Bo offers it to Lan Yu rather than absorbing it himself 59 60.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Beloved granddaughter and only remaining blood relative. He seeks treatment and martial-soul improvement for her, promotes Lan Yu as a potential partner, and urges her to avoid Yu Tianheng 35 38 59.
  • Lan Yu — Close friend, benefactor, and eventual sect leader. Their relationship combines Dugu Bo’s protection with Lan Yu’s instruction in medicine, poison arts, and hidden weapons 35 60 88 100.
  • Tang Shan — Lan Yu’s adopted sister, whom he assists by capturing a 6,500-year Devouring Earth-Claw Dragon for her third ring. He often teases her and Lan Yu about their attachment 39 41.
  • Ye Renxin — Longstanding medical partner and ally, but also a frequent target of his competitive teasing. Dugu Bo initially worries that Ye Renxin’s devotion to the Blue Silver Emperor may conflict with Celestial Court interests 61 100 101.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Bitter enemy. Their feud escalates from the confrontation at Heaven Dou Academy to threats against each other’s families and clans 54 55 59.
  • Yue Guan — Hostile rival whom Dugu Bo previously avoided. After his victory over Yu Yuanzhen, he openly mocks Yue Guan and makes him doubt whether another trump card remains 83.
  • She Long and Chi Xue — Titled Douluos he resents over the contested spoils of the Yu Yuanzhen battle. He attacks them on sight during their attempted intervention against Demon Bear 59 63 115.
  • Qian Renxue / Xue Qinghe — Initially suspects him of involvement in Lan Yu’s disappearance and orders his capture. Later, Dugu Bo supports the war against the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan under her regency 39 128.
