Background / History

Shrek Academy is a renowned institution whose “Academy of Monsters” reputation is said to have endured for tens of thousands of years. Its prestige rests heavily on recruiting exceptional students and on the achievements of its powerful teachers and alumni. 17 53

Qian Jue lived in Shrek City under the care of Sea God Pavilion Vice Pavilion Master Long Yeyue. Yun Ming believed that, once Qian Jue entered Shrek, the academy could compensate for his childhood through resources and win his loyalty through its legacy; Qian Jue instead fled and joined the Spirit Pagoda. 1 2 12

Shrek subsequently attempted to reclaim Qian Jue. Cai Yue'er arrived at Eastsea Academy to recruit him, presenting Shrek as his “true home,” but Qian Jue publicly challenged whether Shrek cultivated its monsters or merely gathered those who were already exceptional. Cai attempted to forcibly take him and threatened Eastsea Academy’s students with a ten-year ban on applying to Shrek before Qiangu Qingfeng intervened. 17

The incident prompted a Sea God Pavilion meeting. Yun Ming chose not to escalate the conflict with the Spirit Pagoda, though he intended to accept Qian Jue as a disciple when he came of age. Long Yeyue and Cai Yue'er opposed this restrained response, fearing that Qian Jue’s growth within the Spirit Pagoda would shift the balance between the two factions. 21

Shrek’s name draws widespread public attention: its entry into the Skysea Alliance Grand Competition caused ticket prices to rise to more than triple their original cost, and spectators greeted its team with fervent cheers. 47

Its inner-court credentials remain valuable enough that other academies bargain heavily for application slots. However, the academy’s prestige is also challenged by Qian Jue’s argument that a school which only recruits geniuses cannot claim full credit for their success. 17 52

The academy is portrayed as increasingly dependent on Yun Ming’s deterrence within the Federation; its elders acknowledge that other forces might act against Shrek if not for his standing as the continent’s acknowledged strongest person. 21

• Spirit Pagoda — A major rival. The two factions openly clash at council meetings, and the Spirit Pagoda’s planned Spirit Academy is intended to compete directly with Shrek in soul master education. 12 53
