Background / History

Itachi was Shisui Uchiha's close friend and was entrusted with Chuan Yu after Shisui's death. At the River of Nanka bridge, he failed to save Shisui from suicide, received Shisui's remaining Mangekyo Sharingan, and awakened his own Mangekyo Sharingan through the shock and grief of the loss 1.

Following Shisui's death, Itachi entered the Uchiha coup meeting with Chuan Yu and publicly revealed what had happened. He blamed the clan's pressure and the failed negotiations for driving Shisui to despair, then delivered Shisui's suicide note to Fugaku; Fugaku subsequently suspended the coup 2.

He treated Chuan Yu as a younger brother, promising to protect him in Shisui's place. After Fugaku adopted Chuan Yu, Itachi also pledged to protect both Chuan Yu and Sasuke 1 2. He later reciprocated Izumi Uchiha's confession, establishing a relationship with her 7.

During the escalating conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha, Itachi remained caught between the village, his clan, and Sasuke's safety. He met Obito in secret and agreed to cooperate if the situation reached its worst outcome, while Danzō later attempted to pressure him by invoking Sasuke 3 22.

After Chuan Yu defeated Danzō and the Uchiha gained leverage over Konoha, Itachi stole Shisui's Mangekyo from Danzō's body with Obito's assistance. He then used Tsukuyomi on Sasuke and defected from Konoha with Obito 25. He later appeared to attack Izumi under Obito's observation, but Chuan Yu intervened and saved her 26.

Itachi joined Akatsuki and eventually reunited with Chuan Yu there. Their initial meeting became a Mangekyo clash, followed by a physical battle involving Amaterasu and Susanoo. Though their relationship remained strained, Itachi accepted Chuan Yu's admission into Akatsuki and later worked alongside him on the mission to capture Naruto 37 38.

Itachi is protective toward those he considers family. He comforted Chuan Yu after Shisui's death, clothed him on a cold night, and repeatedly stated that he would not allow anyone to harm either Chuan Yu or Sasuke 1 3 12. He trusted Chuan Yu's intentions even when Chuan Yu's actions risked provoking war with the Cloud Village 12.

He is also intensely guarded and willing to present himself as ruthless when pursuing a larger objective. He left Sasuke trapped in Tsukuyomi, defected with Obito, and appeared willing to kill Izumi to demonstrate resolve 25 26. His later favorability toward Chuan Yu and his concern for Sasuke imply that his cold behavior did not fully reflect his feelings 38.
