History

Konoha’s leadership had long suppressed the Uchiha clan, pushing it away from political power and fostering unrest. Danzō proposed stripping the clan of its authority and placing it under permanent surveillance; Hiruzen Sarutobi privately agreed with the approach. The resulting tension drove the Uchiha toward a planned coup. 1 2

The village was already politically fragile after the Nine-Tails attack. Hiruzen and Danzō did not intervene alongside Minato Namikaze that night, contributing to heavy civilian casualties and Minato’s death. Danzō later spread rumors that Naruto was the reincarnation of the demon fox, isolating him within the village. 8 27

Uchiha–Konoha Crisis

Danzō used Root to investigate, monitor, and target the Uchiha, while conspiring with Orochimaru to abduct clan members for their Sharingan. He also sought to seize Uchiha Chuanyu’s eye after learning of his mixed Uchiha and Hyuga heritage. 14 21 24

Following Danzō’s death and Itachi’s destruction of the Hyuga clan, Fugaku negotiated with Hiruzen. The Uchiha regained rights, improved living conditions, and control of Root in exchange for continued support of Konoha and cooperation with village mobilization. 26

The arrangement deteriorated after the Uchiha helped defend the village from the Sand and Rock alliance. Emboldened by their military role, clan members harassed villagers and began discussing the seizure of political power, with Fugaku proposing action against the Fire Daimyo. 29 34

Orochimaru’s Assault

Orochimaru orchestrated the Sand Village’s assault on Konoha during the Chunin Exams, using Manda and Impure World Reincarnation against Hiruzen. Hiruzen responded with the Reaper Death Seal, sealing Hashirama and Tobirama and taking Orochimaru’s arms before dying. 32 34

Konoha’s defenses were supported by the Uchiha and Root under Fugaku. The Sand forces retreated after the battle, but Hiruzen’s death created a leadership crisis and intensified the Uchiha’s ambitions. 33 34

Uchiha Destruction and Tsunade’s Succession

Toneri attacked Konoha seeking Chuanyu, confronted Fugaku, and covered the Uchiha compound with the genjutsu Moon Illusion. The Uchiha clan was subsequently massacred, while the village’s memories were altered to place responsibility on Itachi. 42 43

With the Uchiha and Hyuga clans destroyed, Konoha’s overall strength declined. Jiraiya brought Tsunade back to the village, where she accepted the position of Fifth Hokage. 43
