Background / History
Naruto was ostracized by Konoha's villagers, who associated him with the Nine-Tails Incident and treated him as though he were the disaster itself. After Danzō's crimes and the possibility of a Masked Man's role in the incident became public, villagers began to recognize that Naruto was also a victim of the attack 66.
Uchiha Shingetsu approached Naruto during this shift in public opinion, told him he was not a monster, and offered to train him. Naruto responded by renewing his determination to become Hokage and grow strong enough not to be used by others 66.
The Masked Man later revealed that the Nine-Tails was sealed inside Naruto and attempted to use that truth to break him. Shingetsu clarified that Naruto was not a disaster, but the person carrying the seal that contained one 68. The Third Hokage subsequently told Naruto that Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki were his parents and that they died protecting both him and Konoha 69.
Konoha later made Naruto's identity public: he was acknowledged as the Fourth Hokage and Kushina's son rather than the Nine-Tails itself. He was granted the treatment, inheritance, guardianship, and living allowance due to the Fourth Hokage's orphaned child 97 98.
Appearance
Naruto is a blond child whose energetic manner and loud reactions often contrast with the danger surrounding him 66 76.
- Frequently carries food, particularly instant ramen or rice balls 66.
- Was visibly exhausted after the Land of Waves mission, falling asleep during the return journey 84.
- Sustained corrosive injuries to his arm while protecting civilians from Black Zetsu's black mud 93.
Personality
Naruto is outspoken, competitive, and quick to react emotionally. He regularly argues with Sasuke, boasts after small victories, and initially responds to danger with direct action rather than careful planning 69 73.
Despite this impulsiveness, he is highly protective. He repeatedly puts himself between danger and others, including a civilian threatened by black mud, Sakura during Orochimaru's attack, and Uchiha hostages endangered by Snake Scale Talismans 93 116 120. His training under Shingetsu gradually teaches him to identify decoys, protect objectives, and retreat when necessary rather than charging in blindly 99 100.
Naruto is vulnerable to manipulation concerning his parents and his isolation, but he rejects Orochimaru's offer to use the Impure World Reincarnation to see Minato and Kushina again 103 104.
Abilities & Skills
Shadow Clone Technique
Naruto can create more than a dozen Shadow Clones at once.
- Used clones to attack Orochimaru after he threatened Shingetsu 114.
- Disrupted a formation of attacking snakes during the Training Ground 7 ambush 116.
- Positioned clones between Snake Scale Talismans and their Uchiha hostages to shield them from a triggered blood pact 120.
- His clone formation can be disrupted when an enemy catches him off balance; several clones scattered after snakes entangled his ankles 114.
Protective Combat Instincts
Naruto consistently prioritizes civilians and teammates when immediate danger appears.
- Dodged a Hidden Mist rogue ninja's claw attack during his first live mission encounter and continued fighting 73.
- Refused to let Black Zetsu manipulate his anger and grief on the Land of Waves bridge 80.
- Tackled a civilian out of the path of corrosive black mud at Naka Shrine, taking the risk himself 93.
- Blocked kunai aimed at Sakura during the Training Ground 7 ambush 116.
Anti-Manipulation Training
Shingetsu trains Naruto to distinguish an enemy's true objective from bait and to protect targets rather than simply pursue opponents.
- Practices protecting bells while Shingetsu deliberately attacks teammates instead of the stated objective 100.
- Learns that reckless refusal to retreat makes a shinobi easier to kill 99.
- Resists Orochimaru's emotional bait concerning his parents, recognizing that freely offered power or wishes may conceal a trap 104 105.
Nine-Tails Seal
The Nine-Tails is sealed inside Naruto; he is its vessel, not the creature itself 68 97.
- The seal makes him a target for the Masked Man, Black Zetsu, and Hidden Mist 73 105.
- No voluntary use of the Nine-Tails' chakra is documented in the provided chapters.
Relationships
- Uchiha Shingetsu — Mentor and protector who tells Naruto the truth about his status, begins training him, and pushes him to develop sound battlefield judgment 66 68 69 99 100.
- Uchiha Sasuke — Rival and Team 7 teammate. Their frequent arguments coexist with mutual concern, particularly after Naruto is injured protecting civilians 73 93 96.
- Hatake Kakashi — Team leader and guardian figure who checks on Naruto after the Nine-Tails revelation, leads Team 7, and participates in Naruto's future training and evaluations 69 71 98.
- Sakura — Team 7 teammate. Their strained friendship begins to mend when Sakura apologizes for her past behavior; Naruto later protects her during an ambush 99 116.
- The Third Hokage — Reveals Naruto's parentage and the village's failure to protect him, then arranges his inheritance and guardianship 69 71 98.
- Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki — Naruto's deceased parents, who died protecting him and Konoha during the Nine-Tails Incident 69 97.
- Orochimaru — Attempts to exploit Naruto's desire to see his parents through the Impure World Reincarnation technique; Naruto rejects his offer 103 104.
- Haku — Meets Haku during the Land of Waves mission and readily accepts his presence, even asking whether Ice Release can make an ice pop 76.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Truth of the Nine-Tails Incident
Naruto learns that the Nine-Tails is sealed within him and that the villagers' hatred was rooted in fear and manipulation. Rather than accepting the Masked Man's framing of him as a monster, he begins to understand himself as the person containing a disaster created by others 68 71.
Land of Waves Mission
Naruto joins Kakashi, Shingetsu, Sasuke, and Tazuna on the Land of Waves escort mission. He faces real lethal combat for the first time against Hidden Mist rogue ninja, assists in protecting Tazuna, resists Black Zetsu's manipulation, and helps rebuild the bridge after the conflict 72 73 80 82.
Naka Shrine Defense
When Black Zetsu's black mud attacks civilian representatives at Naka Shrine, Naruto saves a villager from a direct strike and helps evacuate civilians despite suffering a corrosive injury 93 94. His actions contribute to the villagers beginning to respect and apologize to him 95.
Orochimaru's Probes
Orochimaru targets Naruto's grief over his parents, offering the Impure World Reincarnation as bait. Naruto admits he wants to see Minato and Kushina, but refuses Orochimaru's method 103 104. He later participates in the defense against Orochimaru's traps, protects Sakura, and uses Shadow Clones to help shield Uchiha hostages 116 120.
Hidden Mist Kill Order
When Hidden Mist adds Naruto to its kill order, he asserts that he is a Konoha shinobi rather than merely the Nine-Tails. Shingetsu publicly reinforces that identity before the Hidden Mist envoy 105 112.
