Background / History

War Record and Hanazuki’s Apprenticeship

A disciple of Sarutobi Hiruzen, Orochimaru distinguished himself during the Second Shinobi World War and became one of the Sannin. His later pursuit of immortality and every ninjutsu in existence led him toward scientific research and cooperation with Danzo 9.

He first appears administering a bell-snatching graduation assessment to Hanazuki, Anko, and Yugao. His use of attacks and genjutsu unsettles the students, who had expected guidance from their instructor 1.

Orochimaru subsequently offers Hanazuki the right to leave the battlefield as an incentive to become his disciple. Their discussion of mortality reveals similar doubts about sacrificing one’s life for the village. Orochimaru then recommends Hanazuki as reinforcements against Chiyo while declining to enter the battlefield himself 8 9.

He negotiates Hanazuki’s mission compensation and becomes responsible for arranging the promised Kusanagi Sword and related materials. Hanazuki chooses training under him over leadership of a chunin squad, Anbu service, and participation in the Uchiha Military Police Force 10 15 17.

Their apprenticeship develops into an exchange of research and forbidden techniques. Orochimaru gives Hanazuki access to his techniques and invites him to investigate the truths behind ninjutsu. He also supplies a summoning scroll, only to be shocked when Hanazuki summons the White Snake Sage rather than Manda 16 19 27.

Failed Hokage Candidacy and Defection

Orochimaru regards Hanazuki’s battlefield achievements as strengthening his own claim to the Hokage position. When Hanazuki questions his future usefulness to Konoha, Orochimaru declares that completing his forbidden art would make the village and its offices insignificant 38.

After the war, he bribes the Land of Fire’s daimyo and councilors to support his candidacy for Fourth Hokage. Hiruzen rejects him, citing his ambition and lack of trust among Konoha’s jonin and its jinchuriki. Minato is selected instead 72 73.

Orochimaru prepares to leave Konoha, with Hanazuki intending to take over the laboratories he leaves behind. Before departing, he forcibly bites Anko and implants a curse mark presented as a parting gift that could help her approach Hanazuki’s strength 73 74.

Hiruzen later discovers that Orochimaru is experimenting on Konoha ninja to develop immortality. Orochimaru explains that some experiments require veteran jonin with accumulated chakra. He escapes and becomes a hunted rogue ninja; later reports identify him as an Akatsuki member 91 110.

Akatsuki and the Konoha Crush

Within Akatsuki, Orochimaru continues testing forbidden techniques and coveting unusual powers. He attempts to recruit Sasori using the reanimated Third Kazekage, takes an interest in Hidan’s immortality, and proposes partnering with Itachi—an arrangement Nagato rejects under the organization’s solitary-operation rules 128 142 160.

His cooperation with Danzo continues after his defection. He sends Danzo an arm covered in Sharingan and later dispatches Yakumi as an envoy to enter Danzo’s Anbu. When Akatsuki receives a commission to destroy Konoha, Orochimaru initially objects to an immediate attack because his experiments require another three years 163 167 171.

During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru confronts Naruto and Sasuke in the Forest of Death. Sasuke’s Sharingan and Naruto’s Sage Mode attract his interest, while their coordinated attacks force him to use Threefold Rashomon and replace his burned body 184 185 186.

Disguised as an Otogakure team-leading jonin, he is subsequently taken away by Hanazuki. Orochimaru reveals his completed immortality technique, but Hanazuki’s hand-seal-free ninjutsu and Rinnegan overturn his expectations. Injured despite using body replacement, he reports Hanazuki’s awakened eyes to Akatsuki 187 188.

Orochimaru then impersonates the Fourth Kazekage to infiltrate the exams and launch the Konoha Crush. He confronts Hiruzen and uses reanimated Hokage against him. Hiruzen sacrifices himself, directing the Grim Reaper’s soul-severing blade at Orochimaru’s hands 191 192 193 194.

Against Hanazuki, Orochimaru unveils Yamata no Orochi. Hanazuki seals six of its heads with Reverse Four-Symbols: Kamui Shuriken, restrains the remaining form with Blut Arterie, and intercepts a fleeing white snake 197.

Revival and Later Research

While Orochimaru is absent, Nagato and Zetsu plunder his underground laboratory in the Land of Rice Fields. Its stores include forbidden techniques, collected Tailed Beast chakra, and numerous reanimation records 225.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kurenai and Anko revive him through Anko’s curse mark and confine him within a sealing barrier. Anko demands that he summon the first four Hokage, warning that refusal will lead Hanazuki to erase his remaining resurrection methods. News that Black Zetsu has stolen his Madara specimen further motivates his cooperation 231.

Orochimaru releases the Dead Demon Consuming Seal and reanimates Hashirama, Tobirama, Hiruzen, and Minato. When he reaches the battlefield, Konoha ninja initially treat him as an enemy; the azure restraints on his body reveal that his movements remain controlled 231 234.

Later, he serves as a scientific advisor on efforts to reach the Limited Tsukuyomi world. He adjusts the interdimensional gate’s instruments and works with Hanazuki’s Book of the Crimson Moon, while Naruto objects to his continuing human experiments 244.

Appearance

Orochimaru is repeatedly depicted with pale, almost sickly skin, severe facial features, long black hair, and serpentine eyes. His appearance can change with his host body, including a youthful female form used after completing his immortality technique 16 172 184 188.

  • Eyes: Golden-rimmed black vertical pupils 143 184.
  • Hair: Black and waist-length in his familiar middle-aged appearance 186 231.
  • Facial markings: Light purple eyeshadow 184.
  • Tongue and fangs: A slick purple tongue and hollow fangs used to implant curse marks 74 128.
  • Transformed body: Yamata no Orochi is a gigantic white serpent with eight heads and one tail 197.

Personality

Orochimaru places knowledge and continued existence above loyalty to Konoha. He seeks immortality not simply to escape death, but to gain enough time to acquire every ninjutsu, forbidden technique, and secret technique. He openly admits to manipulating both dead souls and living people in pursuit of this goal 9 188 193.

His treatment of talented students combines genuine intellectual interest with exploitation. He shares much of his knowledge with those who pursue similar goals and repeatedly praises Hanazuki, yet also covets his eyes. His “parting gift” to Anko is a forcibly implanted curse mark carrying severe risk 52 74 143.

He is calculating rather than consistently impulsive: losing the Hokage election does not end his plans, and he resists a premature war when it would interrupt crucial experiments. However, contempt for his immortality technique provokes anger, and the theft of his research records offends him as a researcher 73 167 188 231.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Techniques and Summoning

Orochimaru uses snakes as weapons, summons, carriers, and extensions of his altered body 9 17 74 184.

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Listed among his owned abilities by Hanazuki’s sign-in system 9.
  • Giant python summons: Used in combat against Naruto and Sasuke and during the invasion of Konoha 184 191.

  • Internal storage: Snakes carry bodies, keys, and sealed scrolls 17 19 73.

Immortality and Body Replacement

His Technique of Immortality transfers his spiritual power into another person’s body, replacing an aging vessel with a younger one 188.

  • Host alteration: Adjusts his outward appearance and voice to conceal a female host beneath his familiar identity 172.
  • Orochimaru Style Body Replacement: Emerges from a damaged body through the mouth, leaving the injured exterior behind 143 186 188.
  • Revival preparations: Returns through a white snake emerging from Anko’s curse mark 231.
  • Limit: Body replacement does not completely remove the pain and damage inflicted by Hanazuki 188.
  • Vulnerability: Hanazuki counters his regeneration with sealing rather than relying only on physical destruction 197.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru adapts and improves the Second Hokage’s forbidden technique to bring deceased ninja back into the living world 128 172.

  • Control: Uses a talisman to suppress the resurrected Third Kazekage’s autonomy and direct his Magnet Release 128.
  • Power management: Weakens exceptionally powerful reanimated subjects to make them controllable 172.
  • Documented summons: Reanimates the First and Second Hokage during the Konoha Crush, then the first four Hokage during the Fourth Shinobi World War 193 231.
  • Countermeasure: Hanazuki’s Realm Severance interrupts the passage between reality and the Pure Land, preventing a summon and causing backlash that destroys Orochimaru’s palm 143.

Curse Marks and Senjutsu Research

Orochimaru investigates ways to access sage power despite admitting that his constitution is unsuited to Sage Mode 27.

  • Implants a three-tomoe curse mark in Anko through hollow fangs 74.
  • Describes the mark as a means to obtain strength beyond ordinary shinobi and open the “Sage Lock,” with a stated one-in-ten chance 74.
  • Leaves a revival route within Anko’s mark, later used by Kurenai and Anko 231.
  • Does not demonstrate mastery of Sage Mode in the provided material; the White Snake Sage identifies it as power his student could attain that he had not 27.

Yamata no Orochi

An ultimate technique developed using research materials supplied by Hanazuki, transforming Orochimaru into an enormous eight-headed white serpent 197.

  • Fires concentrated light attacks from its mouths 197.
  • Uses its massive tail and body to attack and constrict opponents 197.
  • Separates flesh from its tail during combat 197.
  • Is defeated through spatial sealing and Blut Arterie restraints 197.
