Appearance

Madara is a refined-looking Uchiha boy with pale skin, long black hair that spikes in multiple directions, and dark eyes that later awaken into scarlet Sharingan. He wears black clothing and is described as more fashionably dressed than Hashirama. 34 35 47

  • Long, spiked black hair. 34
  • Pale skin and delicate, refined features. 23 35
  • Dresses in black. 34
  • Possesses the Uchiha clan’s characteristic black eyes prior to awakening the Sharingan. 35
  • His Sharingan manifests with one tomoe. 47
  • His Sharingan later develops through the three-tomoe and Mangekyō stages. 86
  • As he takes on greater Uchiha clan responsibilities, his hair grows longer and a fringe falls over his right eye. 137 138

Personality

Madara is initially wary and aloof around Kyogawa, but becomes cooperative after witnessing Kyogawa’s medical ninjutsu. In dangerous situations, he is cautious, patient, and observant; he carefully investigates unfamiliar environments rather than rushing ahead. 20 25

Despite his reserved demeanor, he is protective of those he considers close. Kyogawa’s frightened behavior reminds him of Izuna, prompting Madara to indulge and protect him, while his confrontation at the Naka River makes clear that he will not forgive anyone who threatens his younger brother. 21 47

Madara shares Hashirama’s hopes for a better future, but the deaths caused by the Senju–Uchiha feud leave him convinced that their ideals cannot presently overcome clan hatred. 34 44 47

Madara is proud, direct, and deeply stubborn. He refuses to define himself solely as Indra’s reincarnation, insisting that he is his own person, and he does not easily reveal weakness even when the strain on his Mangekyō Sharingan becomes severe. 140 142

As Uchiha Tajima entrusts him with more clan authority, Madara becomes more composed and politically mature. Though usually imposing before his clansmen, he is willing to humble himself and personally persuade them to accept an alliance with the Senju for the sake of peace and the next generation. 134 135

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

Madara awakens a single-tomoe Sharingan during the Naka River confrontation. 47

  • His awakened Sharingan is scarlet with one tomoe. 47
  • The awakening follows intense emotional conflict between his ideals, his friendship with Hashirama, and loyalty to Izuna. 47
  • His visual and perceptive abilities are noted as far superior to ordinary people; he notices Kyogawa silently mouthing “Mom” while unconscious. 27
  • His Sharingan evolves into the three-tomoe stage after being drawn into a clash with Hashirama. 86
  • His three-tomoe Sharingan subsequently evolves into the Mangekyō Sharingan. 86
  • Prolonged Mangekyō use strains his eyes and diminishes his ocular power, though he initially conceals this condition from Hashirama and Kyogawa. 142
  • After his eye replacement, his Sharingan evolves into the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and his ocular condition recovers. 185 186

Susanoo

Madara can manifest a blue Susanoo after awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan. 86

  • His Susanoo is powerful enough that Kyogawa proposes relying on allied tailed beasts for deterrence so Madara will not need to activate it as often. 142
  • Madara considers only Hashirama worthy of forcing him to use Susanoo in battle. 142

Shurikenjutsu and Hidden Weapons

Madara is highly skilled with shuriken and other projectile weapons. 35

  • Uses shuriken with precise angles and controlled movements. 35
  • Is proficient with kunai and senbon. 35
  • Knocks away weapons aimed at Tobirama and Izuna with a thrown stone alongside Hashirama. 46

Ninja Cat Summoning

Madara can summon a ninja cat to assist him in darkness. 25

  • Uses the cat as his eyes while navigating an unlit passage. 25
  • The summon is startled by sudden light, alerting Madara to the change in his surroundings. 25

Combat Judgment

Madara demonstrates composure and practical judgment in unfamiliar, hazardous terrain. 20 23 25

  • Agrees to cooperate with Kyogawa because surviving the monster-filled town alone would be difficult. 20
  • Reassures Chenghe that Kyogawa is capable of surviving after their separation. 23
  • Chooses a separate tunnel route and advances cautiously through darkness. 23 25
  • Carries the badly injured Kyogawa out of a collapsing tunnel while Chenghe is also wounded. 27
  • Correctly judges that the Uchiha party is disadvantaged during the Naka River standoff and orders a retreat rather than prolonging the conflict. 47

Leadership

Madara grows into an effective leader for the Uchiha Clan and the Senju–Uchiha Alliance. 134 135

  • Uchiha Tajima delegates substantial clan authority to Madara, allowing him to mature as the Uchiha’s young clan head. 134
  • Personally persuades resistant Uchiha clansmen to support an alliance with the Senju. 135
  • Works with Hashirama and Kyogawa to investigate Black Zetsu’s schemes and confront threats to the Alliance. 139 177
  • Joins Hashirama and Kyogawa in the effort to capture and cooperate with tailed beasts. 186 192

Relationships

  • Uchiha Tajima — Father and Uchiha clan patriarch; Tajima is pleased when Madara awakens the Sharingan and later delegates much of the clan’s authority to him. 46 47 48 134
  • Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother. Madara is reminded of Izuna when Kyogawa acts afraid of the dark, and he openly prioritizes Izuna’s safety during the Naka River confrontation. Madara consistently protects Izuna, supports him in clan affairs, and shares the burden of the Mangekyō Sharingan’s hidden dangers with him. 21 47 112 143 185
  • Senju Hashirama — Close friend and sparring partner who shares Madara’s aspirations for peace. Their friendship is strained by their clans’ losses and hostility, but they reunite after realizing they were manipulated and eventually guide their clans into an alliance. 34 44 47 86 134 135
  • Senju Kyogawa — A younger companion whom Madara meets in a monster-filled town. He accepts Kyogawa’s aid, protects him during the tunnel collapse, and treats him with teasing, brotherly familiarity. Kyogawa later helps treat Madara’s Mangekyō-induced eye strain and performs the procedure that enables his eyes to evolve. 20 21 22 23 25 27 28 35 142 185
  • Senju Chenghe — Temporary ally during the town and tunnel incident. Madara comforts Chenghe when Kyogawa is separated from them. 21 22 23
  • Senju Tobirama — Initially an opposing ninja whose safety Madara indirectly protects by intercepting an attack with a stone; their clans’ hostility places them on opposing sides. They later work within the same Alliance despite retaining mutual distrust. 46 47 135 152
  • Black Zetsu — A hidden enemy who manipulates Madara and Hashirama into fighting and seeks to perpetuate hostility between their clans. Madara eventually captures and interrogates Black Zetsu alongside Hashirama and Kyogawa. 86 139 177
  • Kurama — Madara joins Hashirama and Kyogawa in confronting the Nine-Tails, whose suspicions are raised by the trio’s connection to Indra, Asura, and the Sage of Six Paths. 186 192
  • Obito Uchiha (parallel world) — An injured young Uchiha saved by Madara’s alternate-world counterpart, who initially intends to recruit him for the Eye of the Moon Plan. 113 114 116

Story Role / Major Arcs

Space-Time Rift Incident

Madara first encounters Kyogawa in a dangerous town after Kyogawa saves him from an evil demon. Though suspicious at first, he accepts Kyogawa’s healing and joins Kyogawa and Chenghe to investigate the town’s gates and tunnels. 20 21

When Kyogawa is separated from the group, Madara reassures Chenghe that Kyogawa is strong enough to survive. He explores a separate passage, studies murals depicting a sacrificed boy, and later finds Kyogawa gravely injured after the Gate is destroyed. Madara carries Kyogawa out through the collapsing tunnels. 23 25 27

After the incident is resolved, Madara parts from Kyogawa and Chenghe on friendly terms, teasing Kyogawa after the latter clings to him in farewell. 28

Friendship with Hashirama

Madara secretly meets Hashirama at the Naka River, where the two skip stones and later spar. Kyogawa eventually discovers these meetings and joins them, finding that Madara and Hashirama share interests, training discussions, and ambitions. 34 35

Madara and Hashirama establish a stone-skipping signal to warn each other when their fathers and brothers approach. 45

Naka River Confrontation

When the Senju and Uchiha families confront one another, Madara and Hashirama prevent attacks from killing their younger brothers. Madara firmly declares that he will never forgive anyone who tries to harm Izuna. 46 47

Faced with clan enmity and the deaths of brothers on both sides, Madara tells Hashirama that their envisioned future may be unreachable. He withdraws with the Uchiha after recognizing that his side is outnumbered and acknowledging Kyogawa’s strength. 47

Before leaving, Madara identifies himself as “Uchiha Madara,” reveals his newly awakened single-tomoe Sharingan, and declares that he and Hashirama will next meet on the battlefield. 47

Mangekyō Awakening and Black Zetsu’s Manipulation

Black Zetsu engineers circumstances that cause Madara and Hashirama to fight one another. During this confrontation, Hashirama awakens Wood Release while Madara’s three-tomoe Sharingan evolves into the Mangekyō Sharingan. 86

Upon witnessing a golden Susanoo in the distance, Madara initially fears that Izuna has been badly injured and races toward the battlefield with Hashirama. He discovers that Kyogawa, rather than Izuna, manifested the golden Susanoo, while Izuna has also awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. 86 87

Senju–Uchiha Alliance

After learning of the black shadow’s interference and the Uchiha Clan’s mounting difficulties, Madara and Izuna begin considering how to counter the hidden enemy. Madara supports Izuna after Tajima rejects Izuna’s first proposal for an alliance with the Senju. 110 112

As Tajima delegates authority to him, Madara becomes the Uchiha’s young clan head. Together with Izuna, he persuades the Uchiha clansmen to accept an alliance with the Senju, emphasizing that they must prevent children from being sent to the battlefield. 134 135

Madara later reunites openly with Hashirama and Kyogawa, exchanges intelligence with them, and works to protect the Alliance from threats posed by daimyos, rival clans, and Black Zetsu. 137 138 139

Indra, Asura, and the Tailed Beasts

Kyogawa informs Madara and Hashirama that the Uchiha and Senju descend from the Sage of Six Paths’ sons, Indra and Asura, and that Madara and Hashirama respectively carry their reincarnated chakra. Madara accepts the information while asserting that he remains Uchiha Madara rather than Indra. 140

Madara joins Hashirama and Kyogawa in pursuing tailed beasts as potential allies and deterrents for the Alliance. During their encounter with Kurama, the Nine-Tails recognizes the unusual chakra connection shared by the three. 142 186 192

Black Zetsu’s Exposure

Madara captures Black Zetsu and interrogates it alongside Hashirama and Kyogawa. The interrogation exposes Black Zetsu’s thousand-year effort to manipulate the descendants and reincarnations of Indra and Asura in order to revive Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. 177

The revelation confirms that the cycle of Senju–Uchiha hostility had been deliberately cultivated by an outside force, strengthening Madara and Hashirama’s resolve to act as true allies. 177

Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan Restoration

Madara initially delays treatment for his deteriorating Mangekyō Sharingan because of Alliance responsibilities, despite Kyogawa’s concern. 142 178

Kyogawa ultimately conducts successful eye-replacement procedures for Madara and Izuna. The surgery restores Madara’s eyes and allows his Sharingan to evolve into the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. 185 186

Parallel World Encounter

Kyogawa’s space-time ability brings him into contact with an elderly Madara from a parallel world. This counterpart is sustained underground by the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, bears Hashirama’s chakra, and sleeps for days at a time because of his frail condition. 89 91 93

The alternate Madara initially distrusts Kyogawa but accepts his healing, which relieves many of his accumulated injuries and illnesses. Kyogawa eventually convinces him that he is connected to the Madara and Izuna of another world. 98 99

This alternate Madara transmits memories of Izuna’s death to Kyogawa and explains the Mangekyō Sharingan’s eventual blindness and the method for obtaining the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. 101 102

Although the alternate Madara pursues the Eye of the Moon Plan and recruits Obito for it, he gradually learns that Black Zetsu manipulated him to revive Kaguya rather than create peace. The revelation forces him to question the purpose and cost of his plan. 115 116 126 128 129
