Background / History
Zhi Zun Bao was the leader of the Axe Gang in the Western Regions. When Goten arrived at the gang's loess-hill stronghold, Zhi Zun Bao gave him food and drink, then explained the local legend of Sun Wukong: a golden-furred monkey who had defied the Heavenly Court and was reportedly dead for five hundred years. He was alarmed by Goten's description of a different, human Sun Wukong. 2
Initially, he saw Goten's arrival, the Bull Demon King, Fairy Zixia, and the Heavenly Court as disasters overwhelming an ordinary bandit leader. Even so, he rushed into the battle against the heavenly soldiers with a broken sword, defending Goten and Zixia despite being injured. 5 8
Goten's blood awakened a buried connection within him. He experienced memories of Sun Wukong's life and was briefly overtaken by Sun Wukong's consciousness, which addressed Zixia and warned Goten about the full moon. 9 Further encounters with murals, Lingtai Square Inch Mountain, and instinctive martial movements made his connection to the Great Sage increasingly impossible to deny. 16 18 20
Patriarch Bodhi eventually revealed that Zhi Zun Bao is Sun Wukong's reincarnation. After attaining Buddhahood, Sun Wukong had renounced that status and chosen rebirth as an ordinary man to learn whether he could live—and find friendship—without his powers or title. Bodhi also revealed that Zhi Zun Bao carries the connection of an earlier mortal friend of Sun Wukong, likewise named Zhi Zun Bao. 33 37 38
Rather than letting those lives define him, Zhi Zun Bao chooses to live as himself: a free man who may remember Sun Wukong's legacy without becoming bound by it. 33 39
Appearance
Zhi Zun Bao is first presented as a rough, slouching bandit leader, but his bearing changes sharply when Sun Wukong's consciousness emerges. 9
- Missing a front tooth after being struck by a heavenly soldier. 8
- Has an old scar on his left shoulder matching Sun Wukong's scar in a temple mural. 16
- Commonly trains with a bamboo pole, later replacing it with an old wooden staff. 21 41
- During Sun Wukong's temporary possession, his eyes turn gold and his posture becomes upright and imposing. 9
Personality
Zhi Zun Bao begins as glib, cynical, and readily overwhelmed by dangers beyond his experience. He insists that he is only a bandit leader, even after being possessed by Sun Wukong, and initially resists being cast as a hero. 5 11 21
His actions consistently show more courage than his self-image allows. He fights heavenly soldiers to defend Goten and Zixia, follows Goten toward Lingtai Square Inch Mountain despite injury, and later confronts the Immortal-Trapping Array despite his fear. 8 14 25
His central struggle is identity. He fears that he is inadequate compared with Sun Wukong, but Goten repeatedly encourages him to define himself rather than imitate a past life. This guidance helps him pursue strength for his own sake and accept both his history and independence. 28 33 37 42
