Background / History

Goten was playing video games with Trunks when an irresistible force transported him from his home world into an unfamiliar desert. Unable to sense ordinary ki, he discovered a more ancient power permeating the land and set out to find people. His first encounter with local hunters ended with him effortlessly killing a giant Sand Scorpion and accepting Zhi Zun Bao's invitation to the Axe Gang stronghold. 1

In the Three Realms, Goten initially mistakes references to Sun Wukong for his father, only to realize that this world's Great Sage is a different being: a golden-furred monkey said to have died five hundred years earlier. 2 He nevertheless develops a connection to this Sun Wukong through the Moonlight Box, which projects a vision of the Great Sage telling Goten that he has been awaited. 6

His otherworldly status draws the Heavenly Court's attention. Though local laws suppress his Saiyan strength, he breaks the Heavenly Net, drives back three thousand Heavenly Soldiers with a Kamehameha, and survives a confrontation with the Heavenly Kings. 7 8 The Moonlight Box and a full moon later restore part of his strength, allowing him to battle the Four Demon Kings. 9 11

After Zixia is gravely wounded during that battle, Goten's anger triggers a powerful transitional transformation. Determined to heal Zixia, protect his companions, and return home, he travels west to seek Patriarch Bodhi. 13 14

At Fangcun Mountain, Goten begins formal cultivation.
