Background / History

Son Goku trains on North Kai's planet when Tarble's first Super Saiyan transformation sends an unfamiliar Saiyan aura across Earth. Intrigued rather than alarmed, Goku asks North Kai to identify the source and is astonished to learn that Vegeta has a younger brother. He immediately wants to return to Earth and spar with the new Saiyan, but remains focused on training. 17 18

After returning to Earth, Goku meets Tarble and openly asks to learn how to surpass Super Saiyan 3. He accepts Tarble's explanation that a Saiyan tail is vital to reaching Super Saiyan 4, then travels to New Namek to use the Dragon Balls. His wish restores his tail. 32 34 36 38

Goku, Vegeta, Tarble, and Licks subsequently train together in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for two years. Goku attains Super Saiyan 4 on the 523rd day and ultimately breaks out of the chamber by using a ki-amplified roar to shatter a dimensional barrier. 40 42

Appearance

Goku is a Saiyan whose appearance changes significantly with his transformations. After his tail is restored, he has a brown Saiyan tail again. 38

Personality

Goku is enthusiastic about combat and self-improvement. On sensing Tarble's power, his first instinct is to identify the Saiyan and arrange a fight; he remains equally eager to learn the route to Super Saiyan 4 and train toward the required power level. 17 18 32 41

He is also impulsive, forgetful, and socially unaware. North Kai repeatedly has to deal with Goku's loud, careless behavior and doubts whether he will remember his promise to resurrect him. On New Namek, Goku unintentionally offends the Namekians because he does not understand their customs. 18 38

Despite this naivety, Goku is kind-hearted and dependable. The Namekians welcome him as the benefactor who saved their people, and he readily promises to help them if needed. 38
