Background / History

Dr. Gero created Cell as an artificial lifeform using the cells of powerful fighters, including Saiyans, Namekians, and Frieza’s race. His original purpose was to absorb Androids 17 and 18, achieve perfection, and kill Son Goku. He was discovered as an embryo in Gero’s hidden laboratory before escaping his incubation pod. 22 23

After escaping, Cell survived by dividing himself into countless fragments and hiding underground. Over three years, he absorbed human life energy to evolve through multiple forms while searching for Androids 17 and 18. His attack on an Earth Namekian settlement exposed him to Kashu and the Earth’s defenders. 23

Cell’s pursuit of perfection led to the deaths of Namekians and repeated confrontations with Kashu’s group. Son Gohan ultimately destroyed Semi-Perfect Cell with a Hakai-infused Destruction Sphere before he could absorb either Android. 23 25

A separate Cell from another timeline later arrived already having absorbed that timeline’s Androids 17 and 18. This Future Cell devastated West City, killed Krillin during the initial clash, and forced the Cell Games, but Kashu eradicated him in Legendary Super Saiyan Fifth Grade. 26 27

The original Cell survived as a core cell at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Kashu located him, removed his core directive, and offered him the choice of joining the Earth Guardians. Cell accepted rather than face eventual defeat. 32

Following his integration, Cell recovered rapidly, repaired a failing energy core at the Earth Guardians’ base, and evolved into Ultimate Cell. Android 16’s reflections on life and Cell’s discovery that his name belonged to an ancient kind Earthling helped him define himself as more than Dr. Gero’s creation. 33

A limiter in this timeline’s Cell suppressed his evil instincts. Under Kashu’s guidance, he matured into a kind-hearted bio-android, aided victims of Dr. Gero’s experiments, and became known publicly as the “Green Angel.” 29

Appearance

Cell’s appearance changes considerably with his evolution. He is initially an amorphous mass of flesh, later becoming a humanoid bio-android with an insect-like carapace, horns, wings, and a tail designed for absorption. 23

• In his regenerated form, he stands about 1.7 meters tall, has ink-green carapace, metallic-gold eyes, and folded wings resembling a cape. 32

Originally, Cell is driven by Dr. Gero’s programming and views living beings as resources for his evolution. He is calculating, patient, and willing to drain civilians or murder Namekians to gain power. 23

After Kashu offers him freedom of choice, Cell becomes introspective and uncertain of his identity. Gohan’s willingness to accept him as a comrade and Android 16’s discussions of life help him seek a purpose beyond destruction. 33

As an Earth Guardian, he becomes reliable and compassionate. He deliberately helps those harmed by Dr. Gero, rejects the identity of a killing machine, and regards Kashu as his father. 29 35
