Background / History
Vegeta was one of three Saiyans who survived Planet Vegeta's destruction while serving in the Frieza Force, alongside Nappa and Raditz. As the Saiyan prince, he intended to use Frieza's order to investigate Earth as an opportunity to gather surviving Saiyans and eventually rebel against Frieza. He arrived expecting to dominate a weak Saiyan remnant, only to discover the developed settlement of New Vegeta City and fighters far beyond his expectations 16.
He initially tried to destroy New Vegeta City and demanded Kashu's submission as prince. Kashu caught his attack without moving and gave him a choice: leave Earth or join the community and train for eventual revenge against Frieza. With Raditz choosing reunion with his family over hostility, Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz entered the city as new members 16.
Vegeta struggled with a community where royal status carried no authority and strength alone did not entitle him to command. Humiliated by his inability to defeat Krillin, he accepted access to Kashu's gravity room and began adapting to Earth’s training methods. His rapid advancement convinced Kashu that Vegeta possessed the potential to become a Super Saiyan 16.
After learning of the Namekian Grand Elder's ability to unlock potential, Vegeta became determined to close the gap with Goku. He later trained with Kashu and Goku against Cell, broke through to Super Saiyan, and continued pursuing higher transformations through ki compression and genetic recombination 20 23 30 34.
Appearance
Vegeta is a twenty-three-year-old Saiyan with a sharp, hawk-like gaze and a distinctive spiky hairstyle described as broom-like upon his arrival on Earth 16.
- Wears a combat suit bearing the Capsule Corporation logo during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament 35.
- Possesses a golden aura in Super Saiyan forms 23.
- His Super Saiyan 3 form has long golden hair extending to his waist and lacks eyebrows 43.
Personality
Vegeta is intensely proud of his royal bloodline and repeatedly identifies himself as the Prince of the Saiyans. Initially accustomed to the Frieza Force's hierarchy and rule by force, he reacts angrily when Kashu dismisses his title as meaningless in New Vegeta City 16.
His pride is matched by exceptional determination. Rather than abandon training after being surpassed by Earth’s fighters, he endures three hundred times gravity and later trains for sixteen hours a day to master ki compression 16 30. He remains competitive with Goku, but their rivalry develops into regular sparring and cooperation against larger threats 26 35.
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Transformations
Vegeta progresses from Super Saiyan to Super Saiyan Second Grade and eventually Super Saiyan 3 through intensive training and genetic recombination 23 27 34 35.
- His Super Saiyan 2 becomes more stable after genetic recombination 34.
- He can access Super Saiyan 3 without the irreversible physical damage it previously caused, though it initially cannot be sustained for long 34.
- His Super Saiyan 2–3 hybrid form is especially powerful but places a heavy burden on his body 43.
Ki Control and Compression
Kashu teaches Vegeta to compress his ki while gradually ascending from base state to Super Saiyan, reducing energy leakage and improving effective power 30.
- Trains under one hundred times gravity to develop the technique 30.
- Eventually maintains Super Saiyan 3 power while in base state, greatly reducing its strain 35.
- His compressed power is difficult for ordinary devices to measure accurately 35.
Gravity Training
Vegeta uses Kashu's gravity room to overcome his poor adaptation to Earth and refine his body 16.
- Initially struggles simply to stand under three hundred times gravity 16.
- Uses sustained gravity training as the foundation for later transformation and compression training 16 30.
Relationships
- Kashu — Initially an adversary, then his trainer and leader in New Vegeta City. Kashu forces Vegeta to abandon reliance on royal status and guides his ki control, gravity training, and later ki compression 16 30.
- Son Goku — Rival and fellow Saiyan. They train together, fight alongside one another against Cell, and regularly spar after mastering Super Saiyan 3 23 26 35.
- Bulma — Initially a source of mutual arguments after Future Trunks reveals their relationship; they later begin dating and are husband and wife by the parallel-world training period 21 30 43.
- Trunks — His son with Bulma. Vegeta initially rejects Trunks' claim, but ultimately accepts him and shows concern for his future 21.
- Nappa — His longtime second-in-command from the Frieza Force; accompanies him to Earth and joins New Vegeta City 16.
- Raditz — Former squadmate who chooses to reunite with Bardock and Gine rather than remain hostile; their decision helps end Vegeta's initial confrontation with Kashu 16.
- Son Gohan — A fellow Earth Guardian. Vegeta acknowledges Gohan's strength but remains cautious of Androids 17 and 18 25.
- Karrot — Participates in the Super Saiyan God ritual that makes Karrot the first Super Saiyan God; Vegeta acknowledges that the child surpasses all of them 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Saiyan Invasion
Vegeta arrives on Earth to investigate Frieza's report of extraordinary Saiyan power and intends to destroy New Vegeta City. After being decisively defeated by Kashu, he and his squad join the Earth Saiyans instead 16.
Namek Aftermath and Android Preparations
Vegeta is frustrated by Goku's post-Namek growth and is encouraged by Kashu to seek greater potential. Future Trunks' warning about the Androids gives his relationship with Bulma new significance, while Kashu's training helps Vegeta reach Super Saiyan 20 21 23.
Cell Conflicts
Vegeta trains with the Earth Guardians to face Cell but is repeatedly outmatched by Future Cell, even after reaching Super Saiyan Second Grade. These defeats reinforce his pursuit of stronger forms and more efficient ki control 26 27.
Super Android Legion and Peace Era
Vegeta undergoes genetic recombination, stabilizing Super Saiyan 2 and gaining access to Super Saiyan 3. During the following seven years of peace, he and Goku master Super Saiyan 3 and maintain their rivalry through regular sparring 34 35.
Majin Buu Crisis
Vegeta joins the Earth Guardians' assault on Babidi's spaceship and defeats Pui Pui with a single finger flick. Although skeptical of trying to befriend Fat Buu, he does not actively oppose Kashu and Goku's decision 38 39.
Parallel-World Training
Vegeta trains in Buu's accelerated parallel world, creating a hybrid Super Saiyan 2–3 form. Upon returning, he can unleash Super Saiyan 3-level power while appearing to remain in base form 43.
Trivia
- Vegeta’s scouter records Kashu at 3.5 million combat power upon arriving at Earth, causing Vegeta to believe the device is broken 16.
- He calls his dates with Bulma “training to observe Earth culture” 30.
- During the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, his suppressed combat power alone is measured at 98 million, though he states that his true power is far higher 35.
