Background / History

Goku was among the Saiyans who escaped Planet Vegeta with Kashu and Bardock before Frieza destroyed the planet. As a baby, he was known as Kakarot; Kashu identified him as part of the remaining “spark” of the Saiyan race. 1

The survivors settled near Mount Paozu on Earth. By AGE 739, Goku was already displaying the innocent curiosity associated with his later personality, excitedly calling Kashu’s attention to birds in the sky. 3

At age six, Goku began training under Master Roshi alongside Kashu, Krillin, and other Saiyan children. His early regimen included weighted running, calisthenics, ki-blast practice, and swimming while carrying a 200-kilogram turtle shell. 5

He joined the Dragon Ball journey with Kashu and Krillin, where he met Chi-Chi. She immediately developed feelings for him, while Goku innocently asked whether a “boyfriend” was something to eat. 6

Goku entered the World Martial Arts Tournament as a Turtle School disciple. He defeated Chiaotzu by using ki control to break the psychic connection binding him, then defeated Tien Shinhan by exploiting the gap between Tien’s predictive third eye and his physical reaction speed. He later conceded to Kashu in their final. 10 11

Seeking strength sufficient to protect Earth from Frieza, Goku traveled Snake Way to train under North King Kai. He completed the journey in ten days, passed King Kai’s test by catching Bubbles through ki sensing, and spent a year mastering advanced techniques. 17

Goku later fought alongside Kashu’s group on Namek and received a potential unlock from the Grand Elder. The Elder sensed an unusual divine aura within him. 18 19

During the Majin Buu crisis, Goku opposed immediately destroying the newly awakened Buu. His compassion helped Buu trust him, and Goku later taught Buu that being “Majin” did not prevent him from choosing to do good. 39 40

Appearance

Goku matures from a round-faced child with messy black hair into a lean, sturdy young Saiyan. He retains his bright, innocent smile even as his martial ability grows. 5 8 12

He approaches combat eagerly rather than maliciously. Even when facing Tien, he insisted on fighting without hostility, and after winning, he acknowledged that Tien’s raw strength exceeded his own. 11

His compassion extends to enemies. Goku protected Majin Buu from Babidi’s control, treated Buu as an individual rather than a monster, and helped him understand the difference between destructive acts and good deeds. 39 40
