Background / History
Maya was raised on Asuka Island as part of a hereditary line of shrine maidens charged with the Seven Stars of Asuka and the Seven-Star Sword. By her grandmother's generation, the lineage had retained only the ability to use the Seven Stars' power for bodily strengthening; its former self-defense methods had been lost. Her grandmother wished for the duty that bound their family to Asuka Island to end, allowing Maya to choose her own life 69 74.
When Luo Ya arrived seeking the Seven-Star Sword, Maya confronted the pirate Jelik and refused to reveal the sword's location. Jelik's crew attacked the village, but Luo Ya killed them before they could harm her 68. Though initially frightened by Luo Ya, she led him to the Seven-Star Tower and waited outside during his first trial, prepared to use a jewel's power to rescue him if he failed 69 70 71.
After Maya's grandmother entrusted her care to Luo Ya, he chose to teach her swordsmanship rather than immediately seek a Devil Fruit for her. Her rapid progress convinced him to arrange further training under Maynard in the West Blue 71 74.
Maya later accompanied Luo Ya and Belo Betty to Adriel Island, insisting that she wanted to help the civilians suffering under Damai Shi. The expedition became her first real battle, where she fought at the eastern gate with the Revolutionary Army 79 80. By the time Luo Ya returned to Asuka Island, Maya had joined the Revolutionary Army with her grandmother's approval 85.
Personality
Maya is kindhearted, trusting, and motivated by a desire to protect others. Her grandmother considers her simple-minded and too quick to trust people, a concern borne out by Maya's willingness to place faith in Luo Ya despite being initially afraid of him 71.
She is also determined and eager to improve. Maya committed herself to Luo Ya's demanding training, reporting that she had completed 432 sword swings after dinner on her first day, and she pushed to join the Adriel Island mission despite its danger 72 79.
Her first experience of war left her shaken by the deaths of Revolutionary Army soldiers. After blaming Luo Ya for intervening late, she came to regret her reaction and resolved to become stronger so that she could save more people 81 82.
