Background / History
Ariel is the five-year-old second princess of the Asura Kingdom when she is introduced at a palace ball. She is regarded as highly ambitious and politically gifted, with a strong likelihood of eventually becoming queen. The king appoints Luke Notos Greyrat and Dolin Prodia Greyrat as her Guardian Knights, tying the Notos and Prodia families to her safety. 13
Although Dolin initially neglects his position and intimidates Ariel’s companions, Ariel begins building her own support base through public appearances. She visits wounded soldiers, aids disabled people and orphans, presents medals to returning knights, and gives speeches to commoners and soldiers. 14 17
An assassination attempt while Ariel is traveling in disguise kills several people around her. She remains composed during the attack, but Dolin criticizes her for endangering her attendants and an innocent bystander through inadequate protection. 18
Afterward, Ariel summons Dolin and presses him to resume his duties. Despite their hostile early interactions, she persists in her intention to claim the throne, declaring that the deaths of her companions will not make her retreat. Dolin subsequently trains her guards, mages, and attendants in swordsmanship, magic, healing, and detoxification for over a year. 19
Ariel enters a political partnership with Dolin after his return from his adventuring journey. He offers strategy, protection, and support for her bid for the throne, while Ariel seeks to understand his wider objectives. 28
Following the Teleportation Incident, Ariel survives when a Demonic Beast falls into the royal palace grounds. Her guardian mage Derrick Redbat and other guards are killed, while the amnesiac Sylphie saves Ariel by defeating the beast. 29
Ariel takes responsibility for the Fittoa Territory Children’s Refugee Camp, established from Dolin’s exhibition venue and supplies. The effort strengthens her public reputation among the people of Ars. 30
She later relocates to Ranoa University of Magic in Sharia, where she becomes Student Council President with the support of her guards. Her political objective becomes securing the backing of Armored Dragon King Perugius, whose prestige could make her claim to the throne viable. 34 35
When Ariel finally visits Perugius aboard Chaos Breaker, he challenges her to identify the most important quality of a king. Though initially unable to answer, she reflects on the expectations and sacrifices of her companions. Perugius ultimately agrees to support her return to Asura and her claim to the throne. 69 89 90
Luke’s jealousy of Dolin escalates into betrayal after he attempts to harm Dolin’s allies and takes Elmoia and Clini hostage. Ariel initially struggles to believe that her longtime Guardian Knight would turn against her, but Luke is killed after Dolin defeats him and his accomplices. 81 82
With Perugius’s backing and no safe alternative to remaining abroad, Ariel returns to Ars to openly contend with First Prince Gravel for succession. She is welcomed by civilians, reunites with her ailing father King Leonard, and vows to protect the Asura Kingdom and its people. 97 102 103
Ariel conducts an intensive campaign among the nobility while enduring repeated assassination attempts. After using Perugius’s appearance at a grand assembly to challenge Gravel’s faction, she consolidates control over the kingdom’s military and political institutions. She is formally crowned Queen of Asura, with Dolin publicly named Prince Dolin and Asura’s First Knight. 104 105 108 122
As queen, Ariel delegates most routine administration to her ministers while retaining control over major policy and political direction. She later maintains her position in Asura while also being recognized as Empress Ariel alongside Sunless Emperor Dolin. 120 238
Appearance
Ariel is described as a beautiful princess with slender legs. As a student at Ranoa University, she wears the institution’s new skirt-style uniform. 42
- Often attended by personal servants and Guardian Knights.
- Resides at Silver Tear Palace in Ars before studying in Sharia. 14 19
- Her portrait hangs in the master bedroom of Silver Tear Palace. 19
- As Queen of Asura, she wears formal royal court dress and is presented publicly with the crown and golden scepter of Asuran sovereignty. 122 238
Personality
Ariel is ambitious, politically perceptive, and socially adept. She understands the importance of public goodwill, noble alliances, and influential external supporters in a struggle for the throne. 17 29 35
She is resolute despite danger and personal loss. After the assassination attempt, she insists that she will not abandon her goal of becoming ruler simply because the path is dangerous. 19
Ariel can quickly assess political realities. She rejects the idea of gaining the throne solely through Dolin’s magical coercion, recognizing that a ruler without noble legitimacy would face disobedience and further assassination attempts. 35
In private, she becomes increasingly open and teasing with Dolin, while retaining a composed exterior even when he provokes her. 35 42 45
Ariel possesses considerable personal charisma despite lacking notable magical or swordsmanship ability. She treats followers warmly, makes outsiders feel included, and inspires fierce loyalty from guards and attendants who are willing to risk their lives for her. 103
Although she is capable of decisive political action, Ariel can be anxious about her suitability for kingship and later regrets being unable to share in the founding of Dolin’s new nation. Her vulnerability is most apparent in private conversations with Dolin, where she admits that becoming queen has left her feeling constrained by the path she chose. 67 69 140
Political Activities
Public Support
Ariel cultivates influence among commoners and the military through charitable visits, ceremonies, speeches, and honors for returning knights. Her attendants also work through their family connections to build support for her claim. 17 50
Upon returning to Ars, Ariel’s crest is greeted by cheering civilians. She subsequently expands her campaign through balls, private noble gatherings, and alliances secured by the formidable guard force around her. 102 104
Refugee Relief
After the Teleportation Incident, Ariel assumes public responsibility for the Fittoa Territory Children’s Refugee Camp. The camp shelters displaced children using a former exhibition site and pre-positioned supplies. 30
The former camp later develops into a large school for displaced children, funded through the period of Ariel’s political struggle. Its curriculum includes basic literacy as well as magic and swordsmanship instruction. 104 113
Ranoa University of Magic
At Ranoa University, Ariel becomes Student Council President and uses the school as a base for building connections. She seeks local noble investment, recruits useful talent, and is advised to prioritize magic-tool craftsmen and magic-education specialists for her future government. 34 42
Her university faction also defeats the Beast-kin students who had been terrorizing other students, establishing the Student Council’s authority within the academy. 34
Perugius’s Support
Ariel considers Perugius’s support essential because her domestic noble backing alone is insufficient to overcome her brothers’ factions. Perugius tests her understanding of kingship rather than immediately granting his endorsement, forcing her to confront the purpose behind her ambition. 29 69
After Ariel resolves to honor the hopes of the companions who supported and died for her cause, Perugius agrees to aid her return to Ars. His public appearance at her grand assembly becomes a decisive political demonstration against Gravel’s supporters. 89 90 105
Claim to the Throne
Ariel’s position in Ars was initially weak compared with her elder brothers because noble support was limited. Her planned path to power relied on gaining Perugius’s support while maintaining the surviving members of her retinue. 29 35
After returning to Asura, Ariel organizes her supporters, withstands numerous assassination attempts, and works to dismantle the influence of the Prodia, Notos, and Boreas houses aligned with Gravel. 104 108
Reign as Queen
Ariel is crowned after Gravel’s faction is defeated and the opposition’s criminal evidence falls into her hands. She receives the Asuran crown and scepter, takes the royal oath, and is recognized by the royal-bloodline ceremonial platform. 122
As queen, Ariel generally delegates routine ministerial reports and administrative work while personally directing matters of major national importance. She also grants Dolin the title of Prince Dolin and the authority of Asura’s First Knight. 120 122
