Biodata

Background and History

Kuma was enslaved with his father in Mary Geoise. His mother died at the hands of the Celestial Dragons, and his father was shot before his eyes. At God Valley, Kuma escaped with Ivankov and Ginny and sent hundreds of other slaves and island residents to safety 8 16 54.

Kuma later joined the Revolutionary Army alongside Ginny, whom he loved. He had rejected her proposal because of his Buccaneer heritage, a decision he came to regret. After Celestial Dragons abducted Ginny, she gave birth to Bonney and eventually died in Kuma's arms. Kuma raised Bonney as his daughter; when she developed Azure Jade Scales, finding a cure became his overriding priority 5 8.

After leaving the Revolutionary Army, Kuma set out with Bonney to find Vegapunk. In Dressrosa, Dongye Huanglong offered leads on treatments and invited Kuma into his planned faction. Kuma accepted on the condition that Bonney be saved, becoming the first member of the Desolate Dragon Group. Vegapunk, Mansherry, and Law subsequently treated Bonney; Kuma later told his former Revolutionary Army comrades that he and Bonney would remain with the group 8 9 51.

Appearance

Kuma stands 689 cm tall. He wears rimless glasses and is seen with a hooded cloak and gloves; he removes a glove to use his Paw-Paw Fruit power 8.

Personality

Kuma is gentle and protective despite his intimidating size and strength. He spared pirates while taking their ship, restrained an attack on Thriller Bark's zombies because Bonney was present, and exhausted himself evacuating thousands of Sorbet Kingdom residents. He also carries lasting guilt over his inability to protect Ginny or rescue Ivankov sooner 8 10 72 100.

His restraint has limits. He declared war on the Celestial Dragons after learning of Saturn's role in Ginny and Bonney's illness, and later attacked Celestial Dragons who threatened Bonney while he searched for information about Ginny 70 199.

Paw-Paw Fruit

Kuma can repel people, objects, attacks, and certain physical conditions with his palms 8 20 349.

• Travel — Sends himself and others flying between locations. He could not directly travel to distant places he had never visited; moving a giant laboratory across the Calm Belt consumed most of his strength 5 8 16.
• Shockwaves — Compresses air into attacks such as Ursa Shockwave 70 72.
• Treatment — Developed techniques to repel injuries, illness, and pain. His “Healing Bullet of Negative Injury” also removed Ochoku's weakening curse from himself 20 330.
• Defense — Repelled attacks from a Marine's Rewind-Rewind Fruit ability 349.
• Limits of memory manipulation — Kuma had not established whether he could repel other people's memories when Huanglong asked him to try 20.

Physical Strength and Haki

• Buccaneer physique — Possesses exceptional strength, stamina, and defense; he continued using his Devil Fruit power extensively while evacuating scientists 14.

• Vegapunk — Led Bonney's medical treatment and used Kuma's bloodline factor in Seraphim research 14 16 51.

• Sorbet Kingdom crisis — When the World Government targeted Kuma's homeland to draw him out, he fought to protect its people and exhausted himself evacuating thousands. After the kingdom's destruction, he helped relocate survivors 79 100 108.
• Impel Down invasion — Entered the prison with Huanglong's group and rescued Ivankov 221 226.
• God-Demon Island — Searched a Celestial Dragon warship for information about Ginny and attacked its occupants after they threatened Bonney 199.
• Later campaigns — Fought beside the Huanglong Six Paths to capture Great Eagle Igo and joined the battle against the Five Elders 378 440 444.
• After Marineford — Grieved Ivankov's death, believing he might have saved both Ivankov and Sabo had he remained on the battlefield 602.
