History

Vegapunk worked for the World Government on Punk Hazard, where its science division modified Dongye Huanglong as Experiment Subject 88. He disliked human experimentation but complied under government control. He spoke with Huanglong privately and refused his requests for the Artificial Azure Dragon Fruit, fearing that a successful test would lead the government to demand more artificial fruits 2 3.

After Caesar Clown's poison-gas disaster, Vegapunk opposed killing Subject 88 and reported the situation to the Five Elders, who ordered its capture. He relocated to Egghead Island, where agents monitored his work and pressed him to produce Artificial Devil Fruits. Meanwhile, he secretly studied Ohara's books and Poneglyphs 1 3 11 13.

Huanglong confronted Vegapunk on Egghead, exposed his forbidden research and offered to fund an independent laboratory. Worried that the World Government might eliminate him, Vegapunk agreed to leave, taking important equipment and a giant robot. He subsequently treated Bonney and established a research base on Sky Island 12 13 14 30.

Vegapunk later moved his Punk Record and six clones to a moon base. During the Marineford War broadcast, he interrupted the live feed to warn the public that Imu had detonated two New World supervolcanoes and urged people in threatened regions to evacuate 253 558.

Appearance

Vegapunk has an unusually large head, which continued growing until Law severed it as part of Vegapunk's clone project 19 24 34.

• His separated head became the Punk Record, connected to him through an apple-shaped antenna 34.
• During his emergency broadcast, he appeared as a small old man with a long tongue 558.

Personality

Vegapunk prefers inventions that benefit people over weapons made for the World Government. He objected to Caesar's recklessness, tried to stop Huanglong from killing Egghead's scientists indiscriminately, and feared that memory-clearing technology could enable a dictator 1 3 13 81.

His curiosity can nevertheless override his reservations. He wanted to study the Sun God Nika ability despite his friendship with Dragon, and continued investigating Blackbeard's unusual body and the nature of Devil Fruit powers 115 173 254. Research freedom, reliable funding and access to equipment were decisive in his move from the World Government to Huanglong's group 12 13 28.

Abilities & Skills

Cloning and artificial soldiers

• Created six clones that share his memories: Thought Edison, Wisdom Pythagoras, Justice Shakya, Evil Lilith, Rampage Atlas and Desire York 34 108 173.
• Developed Pacifistas using Kuma as a template and cultivated Seraphim with additional bloodline factors and Paramecia abilities 34 173.
• Tested accelerated Seraphim growth using Shinobu's ability. The subject grew physically, but its wisdom and consciousness did not advance with its body 171 172.

Devil Fruit and bloodline research

• Created the Artificial Azure Dragon Fruit and later produced relatively complete artificial Zoan fruits from Rob Lucci's and Jabra's bloodline factors 3 108.
• Developed Paramecia Green Blood for Seraphim and successfully replicated an Artificial Sun God Nika Fruit; whether that fruit could awaken remained uncertain 14 115 248 253.
• Studied Blackbeard's three hearts and souls, but could not reproduce or fully explain his soul fusion. He cautioned that adding Logia or Zoan abilities to Blackbeard might cause interference 254 261.

Engineering and medicine

• Researched stem-cell transplantation as a treatment for Bonney's Jade Scale Disease 13 14.
• Built a magnetic-field disruptor that prevents Eternal Poses and log poses from guiding correctly. It requires regular recharging 232 248.
• Improved memory-modification research using a sample of Brûlée's blood 430.

Relationships

• Dongye Huanglong — Former test subject and later patron. Vegapunk left the World Government with him, but continued to question some of his methods and what he might do with his power 3 13 81 260.
• Caesar Clown — Fellow scientist whose reckless experiments Vegapunk condemned 1 3.
• Bartholomew Kuma and Bonney — Kuma sought Vegapunk's help for his daughter. Vegapunk treated Bonney and used Kuma as the template for the Pacifistas 5 14 34.
• Momotaro — Bodyguard who chose to accompany Vegapunk when he left Egghead; later transported his science team between Sky Island and the moon 13 253.
• Vinsmoke Judge — Former colleague who supplied equipment and materials for Vegapunk's independent research 27 30 248.
• Dragon — Old friend; Vegapunk privately asked Huanglong not to tell Dragon about his interest in researching Dragon's son's Nika ability 115.

Trivia

• Vegapunk's hometown is Balgrimoa. He wants to transform it, while Huanglong later makes plans to relocate the island and address its cold climate 248 249.
• He named the Pacifistas after Kuma's dream 34.
