The afternoon dismissal bell rang.
Students streamed from the teaching building toward the cafeteria, and the hall quickly filled with people.
Steam from stewed meat and stir-fried greens drifted from the serving windows. There was only a short line at the Class A meal window, while the Class C area was packed shoulder to shoulder.
The clatter of trays mixed with chatter and laughter, lively and noisy, as the warmth of daily life spread with the aroma of food.
Sunlight slanted in through the windows, casting pale patches of light across the tabletops.
Fang Yuan and Gu Yuena found a table by the window and sat side by side to eat.
"Little Fang Yuan, does the food here suit your tastes?"
Gu Yuena moved a piece of stewed meat into his bowl, then casually picked up the greens he had set aside and put them on her own plate.
"It's okay. It tastes pretty good. Just not as good as what you make yourself, Mother."
Fang Yuan shoveled rice into his mouth and answered seriously.
"Little thing, you sure know how to talk sweet."
Gu Yuena smiled, then said, "How about I get up a little earlier tomorrow and make you a lunchbox to bring? It'll definitely suit your tastes better than the cafeteria, and it'll be cleaner too."
"No need, Mother. That's too much trouble."
Fang Yuan quickly waved his hand.
"Why are you being so polite with me?" Gu Yuena lightly touched his cheek with her fingertips. "I liked you better when you were little and would act spoiled and unreasonable with me.
Now that you're growing older, you're thinking more and more, and I don't like that."
"Mother, I was wrong."
"Why are you always apologizing?"
Gu Yuena shook her head slightly, her tone gentle yet firm. "You didn't do anything wrong. Mother loves you, but there are always times when I don't consider your thoughts. You have to learn to refuse, even if the person you're refusing is me."
"Mm."
Fang Yuan nodded, a trace of happiness spreading over his lips.
Mother's personality was a little obsessive, but this love was real.
Mother's completely unreserved favoritism...
After enough time, he had even started developing an Oedipus complex!
Just as he was thinking that, several sets of footsteps stopped beside the table.
"Little Brother Fang Yuan, Student Gu Yue, hello. There aren't many seats left in the cafeteria. Can we sit here?"
Several girls in school uniforms held their trays and asked softly.
"Sure. Sit."
Gu Yuena's gaze swept over them, and she raised her hand slightly.
They sat down, and the purple-haired girl spoke first. Her gaze fell on Fang Yuan, carrying deliberate friendliness. "Little Brother Fang Yuan, from your accent, you don't seem like a local?"
"I'm from Shrek City. What about you?"
Fang Yuan nodded slightly.
"We're all locals."
The red-haired girl beside her chimed in, a hint of envy in her eyes. "Shrek City is much livelier than East Sea City, and it even has Shrek Academy, a top academy across the entire continent. Why would you transfer to our academy? Wouldn't it be better to stay over there?"
"My parents came here for business, so I transferred with them."
Fang Yuan replied casually, his tone even. "I'm only six. I'm not old enough to take the entrance exam for Shrek Academy anyway. It doesn't make much difference which intermediate academy I attend."
The girls nodded, exchanged glances, then asked again, "Little Brother Fang Yuan, you're only six and already rank fifteen. Do you have some cultivation trick, or is your talent just naturally that good? Could you teach us?"
"Well..."
Fang Yuan put down his chopsticks as if hesitating.
But from the corner of his eye, he saw everything clearly.
The purple-haired girl beside him had a small paper packet pinched in her hand under the table, her fingertips trembling slightly. Using the edge of the table as cover, she quickly sprinkled a little fine white powder into his tray.
The motion was very fast. The powder fell into the sauce and vanished without a trace in the blink of an eye.
His heart instantly understood, and he even found it a little funny.
It had only been one day since he enrolled, and the only people he had offended were Xie Xie and Tang Wulin.
There was no need to think about it. This was definitely Xie Xie's doing.
A rich young master had spare money on hand, so he hired a few girls to drug someone and mess with him. That was about the level of his methods.
He showed nothing on his face and smiled. "Haha, Big Sister, that's a secret. It's not convenient to say."
The purple-haired girl withdrew her hand, quickly clenched the empty paper packet in her palm, and asked with another smile, "Then, Little Brother Fang Yuan, is it convenient to leave me your contact information? This is the ID for my soul communicator. If I have cultivation questions in the future, I can ask you for advice."
Using the motion of taking out her device, she smoothly stuffed the medicine packet into her skirt pocket, the whole sequence flowing as naturally as running water.
"Sorry, I'm still young. My family hasn't gotten me one of those yet."
"Oh, I see. That's kind of a shame."
The purple-haired girl feigned disappointment, then stood up. "Then we won't disturb your meal. We'll be going now."
The girls picked up their trays and hurried away, even glancing back in this direction as they left.
"Little Fang Yuan, you can't eat this food anymore."
With Gu Yuena's spiritual power, she had already detected that much.
She reached out and took Fang Yuan's tray, rising to head for the food-waste bin.
"Mom, I know. Go ahead and throw it out."
Fang Yuan nodded, not surprised in the slightest.
"No rush."
Gu Yuena's steps paused. Her gaze swept over a load-bearing pillar not far away, a trace of amusement in her eyes. "Someone's been hiding there and watching for ages, waiting to see you make a fool of yourself.
Perfect. Let him eat it for you."
Behind a load-bearing pillar on the other side of the cafeteria, Xie Xie crouched with his back hunched, half his head poking out as he stared fixedly at Fang Yuan's table.
He was both furious and heartsick.
To hire those girls, he had blown half a month's pocket money, and in the end the other side hadn't taken a single bite.
Damn it, he actually didn't fall for it! All that money went down the drain!
Beside him, Tang Wulin was holding his tray and eating with relish. On the tray was the Class A meal Xie Xie had promised to treat him to that morning; the ribs were stewed glossy with oil, paired with two heaping spoonfuls of rice.
He gnawed on a rib, glanced at Xie Xie, and mumbled teasingly through his food, "Xie Xie, you failed again, didn't you? My mom was right. Nothing good comes from doing bad things."
"Whose side are you on, exactly!"
Xie Xie rolled his eyes hard and dug his fingers into the wall.
Those two siblings might not look very old, but they were sharp-minded and extremely alert. There was simply no opening to exploit.
He was lowering his head in thought, wondering whether he should use a more hidden method next time, when he suddenly heard Tang Wulin cry out anxiously, "Watch out!"
"Hiss—what is that?"
Before Xie Xie could react, a huge mess of soup, rice, and dishes splashed down over his head. Warm sauce ran down his hair, sticky and clinging all over his face, even pouring into his collar.
He instinctively opened his mouth to curse, only for several mouthfuls of soup mixed with greens and rice to pour straight in, carrying a strange bitterness.
Gu Yuena stood beside the pillar, holding an empty tray. Just now, as she had carried the tray toward the food-waste bin, she had casually flipped it while passing the pillar, dumping the entire tray squarely onto Xie Xie's head.
"Holy crap!"
Xie Xie's expression changed instantly. He clutched his mouth and coughed hard, bending over and trying to vomit, but it was already too late. Most of the soup had gone down his throat.
A faint sinking feeling soon spread through his stomach, followed by waves of pain.
He no longer had the mind to make threats, nor even to wipe his face. Clutching his stomach, he charged toward the restroom, his steps staggering.
Even after he had run far away, an exasperated shout drifted back from the corridor. "Gu Yue! I'm going to duel you! This isn't over!"
The students eating around them were all drawn by the commotion and looked over one after another. Some couldn't help snickering.
Tang Wulin froze where he stood, even forgetting to gnaw the rib in his hand. He hurriedly waved his hands and shrank back, afraid of being caught in the crossfire. "This has nothing to do with me! He brought it on himself! I didn't take part!"
He really didn't want to provoke such a formidable girl. She could even pick someone out from behind a pillar, and her aim was absurdly accurate.
Gu Yuena brushed off the bits of vegetable leaf stuck to her hands as if she had only done something utterly trivial, then turned and walked back to the table.
Watching Xie Xie flee in such a sorry state, she let out a soft laugh. Her voice was not loud, but it drifted clearly into Tang Wulin's ears.
"Go back and tell your buddy that if he wants trouble, he's welcome to come. Next time, it won't be as simple as dumping some food on him."
Fang Yuan propped up his chin and watched her sit back down, a faint smile in his eyes.
"Mom, your aim was way too accurate."
"Little tricks like that don't take any effort to deal with." Gu Yuena rubbed his hair. "Wait here. I'll get you another clean serving. Tell me what you want to eat."
"Stewed meat, and rice."
Fang Yuan obediently named the dishes, watching as Gu Yuena got up and walked toward the serving window.
He turned his head and looked in the direction of the restroom, feeling a little amused.
With Xie Xie's personality, after suffering such a huge loss, he definitely would not let it go.
His school days from now on probably wouldn't be boring.
