Background / History

Lelouch is the son of Emperor Charles zi Britannia and the late Empress Marianne. He is seventeenth in Britannia’s line of succession and was sent to Japan with his younger sister Nunnally as a hostage after Marianne’s death. He later lives at Ashford Academy under the surname Lamperouge, concealing his royal identity. 360 371

His body was altered from the fertilized-egg stage to increase his compatibility with Geass. The process gave him exceptional affinity for Geass but left him with chronically poor stamina. Mahiro attempted to strengthen him through harsh physical training, but Lelouch could not overcome this inherited limitation. 360

Mahiro had previously served as Lelouch’s royal tutor for two years. Their reunion at Ashford Academy rekindles Lelouch’s hatred of Britannia and desire to uncover Marianne’s murder, with Mahiro encouraging him to seek the power necessary for revenge. 360 362

Following the Shinjuku incident, Lelouch receives Geass from C.C. and learns that it grants him the ability to command others. After Mahiro explains its cost, Lelouch accepts the irreversible path of rebellion, resolves to destroy Britannia, and chooses Clovis as the first target of his revenge. 364 365

Appearance

Lelouch is a tall, slender youth with a delicate, handsome appearance and a notably frail build. His physical weakness contrasts sharply with his aristocratic bearing and intense presence. 360

  • Black hair.
  • Mysterious violet eyes.
  • Thin frame and poor stamina.
  • Usually wears Ashford Academy’s uniform as Lelouch Lamperouge.
  • Uses a mask and elaborate costume while acting as Zero. 360 381 382

Personality

Lelouch is proud, intelligent, and intensely driven by revenge against Charles and Britannia. He views peace under Britannian rule as impossible and is willing to accept death, deception, and escalating violence in pursuit of his goals. 362 365 371

Despite his ruthlessness, Nunnally remains central to his decisions. He also refuses to let Suzaku take responsibility for Clovis’s death, personally arranging Suzaku’s rescue because of their past friendship. 379

As Zero, Lelouch is an effective manipulator and public speaker. He understands the importance of symbols, uses fear and spectacle to control a battlefield, and reshapes the Black Knights into a disciplined organization centered on his own leadership. 382 420 437

His attachment to those close to him remains a weakness. He refuses to use Geass on Suzaku despite their worsening conflict, hesitates during Euphemia’s massacre, and struggles to trust even Mahiro when political pressure mounts. 383 443 456

Abilities & Skills

Geass: Absolute Obedience

Lelouch’s Geass allows him to impose commands directly upon another person’s will. It manifests in his left eye and is suited to manipulation, interrogation, and battlefield control. 365

  • Can compel targets to follow commands, including ordering Britannian soldiers to kill themselves. 365
  • Used to interrogate Clovis about Marianne’s death. 371
  • Used to obtain a military transport truck for Suzaku’s rescue. 381
  • Used on Jeremiah Gottwald to facilitate Suzaku’s escape. 382
  • Requires direct eye contact and has an effective range of 273 meters. 366
  • Cannot affect a target concealed inside a Knightmare cockpit without eye contact. 366
  • Can only be used once on each individual. 381
  • Later becomes unstable and activates beyond Lelouch’s intent. 456 460

Strategy and Command

Lelouch treats conflict as a chessboard, directing forces remotely and exploiting terrain, enemy priorities, and public perception.

  • Leads resistance forces against Britannia through remote Knightmare commands during the Shinjuku battle. 367
  • Uses the threat of a device hidden in Clovis’s hearse to take Britannian civilians hostage and force Jeremiah into a vulnerable position. 382
  • Engineers a landslide at Narita to devastate Cornelia’s army. 419
  • Manipulates Cornelia’s concern for Euphemia and lures her toward Mahiro’s Azure Dragon. 399 420
  • Reorganizes the Black Knights and remnants of the Japanese Liberation Front into a structured military hierarchy. 437

Oratory and Manipulation

Lelouch can motivate uncertain allies and turn political crises to his advantage.

  • Rallies a reluctant soldier into carrying out a key maneuver against Cornelia’s guard. 420
  • Builds Zero into the Black Knights’ absolute spiritual leader through charisma and carefully managed symbolism. 437
  • Uses Euphemia’s Geass-driven massacre as the justification needed to expand the Black Knights into a force capable of opposing Britannia. 456 458

Knightmare Operation

Lelouch pilots Knightmares when necessary, though his greatest strength remains command rather than direct combat.

  • Commands from a Knightmare during the Shinjuku operation. 367
  • Directs Black Knight forces from a Burai during the Shikine Island operation. 444
  • Steals and escapes in the experimental Gawain, using its flight system and Hadron Cannons. 450
  • Uses Gawain and prearranged Geass-controlled assets to survive a confrontation with Cornelia. 462
