Background / History
Saiyans are a natural warrior race regarded as upper-middle tier on a universal scale. Their bodies are shaped by “combat factors,” granting them rapid growth through training and battle, slow aging after adulthood, enormous appetites, and exceptional combat potential. Their ordinary physical peak is tied to the quality of their bloodline; the legendary Super Saiyan is an exceptional state beyond normal Saiyan development. 1 11
Planet Vegeta was destroyed under Frieza’s rule, leaving only scattered survivors. Frieza treats the continued existence of Saiyans as a threat, particularly because of the legend of the Super Saiyan, and orders surviving Saiyans hunted. 12 13 21
Saiyan society is portrayed as rigidly hierarchical. Low-class warriors were taught that they could never surpass high-class warriors, while elite Saiyans such as Vegeta placed immense value on status and racial pride. 1 21
Biology
Saiyans resemble humans closely, with the tail being their principal visible difference. They retain a youthful appearance for a long time after reaching adulthood and require oxygen, meaning they cannot survive in space unaided. 1 5 48
- Saiyans possess tails, which are both a major weakness and important to their power. 2 15 48
- Their extreme appetite supports the energy expenditure of high-intensity combat. 1
- Their combat power rises quickly through training, combat, and the development of their innate potential. 1 3
- Near-death recovery can raise a Saiyan’s strength, but attempting to exploit this deliberately is dangerous and unreliable. 5 7
- Their battle-oriented instincts make them resistant to reverence for gods and drawn to strong opponents. 6 8
- Stronger transformations make emotional control increasingly difficult; ki control and martial-arts mastery are therefore critical to safely developing their potential. 3 18
Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| High-Level Saiyan Bloodline | 1 | Li Ming gains the bloodline talent; his body heals and changes, but he initially lacks training and has not accessed much of its power. |
| Ki perception and control | 3 | Through weighted suppression training under Kami and Mr. Popo, Li Ming learns to perceive and manage his own ki. |
| Berserk Transformation | 15 | A self-created explosive-release state that activates Saiyan combat factors; initially doubles Li Ming’s 110,000 base battle power to 220,000, with a stated potential ceiling of tenfold. |
| Enhanced Berserk state | 18 | Further developed, but its massive ki consumption and tendency to stir Saiyan savagery make it difficult to control. |
| Super Saiyan threshold | 24 28 | Li Ming reaches the minimum power threshold but cannot transform; he continues accumulating potential. |
| Incomplete Super Saiyan attempts | 32 | Transformation repeatedly fails even under extreme danger; a complete Super Saiyan is described as a fiftyfold increase over base power. |
| Super Saiyan awakening path | 43 | A Yardrat sage identifies Li Ming’s heart and inner direction—not vital energy—as the obstacle to transformation; Li Ming awakens with enhanced power after spiritual training. |
Transformations
Great Ape Transformation
A tail-dependent transformation capable of multiplying a Saiyan’s battle power by roughly ten times. Its drawbacks include severe energy consumption, limited speed, and an obvious weak point in the tail. 11 15
Berserk Transformation
Li Ming’s artificial transformation-like technique, inspired by Master Roshi’s ability to explosively release ki. It forcibly activates Saiyan combat factors and produces a short-term surge in power. 15
- Initially doubles battle power. 15
- May potentially reach a tenfold increase comparable to Great Ape transformation. 15
- Causes crimson skin, erect hair, electrical discharges, and uncontrolled ki leakage. 15
- Consumes enormous ki and can stimulate Saiyan savagery, worsening emotional and ki control. 18
Super Saiyan
The legendary golden-haired Saiyan transformation. It requires sufficient S-cells and extreme emotional stimulation, providing a fiftyfold increase over the user’s normal state. 32
- Considered the practical peak of Saiyan power development and an answer to stronger cosmic races. 1 32
- Li Ming’s abundant vitality and rapidly replenished potential from the Fruit of the Tree of Might interfere with his ability to reach the exhausted, crisis-driven state needed to transform. 35
- The Yardrat sage identifies the user’s inner direction as the decisive factor in Li Ming’s failure. 43
- Super Saiyan 2 is described as approximately a one-hundredfold increase over normal battle power; Super Saiyan 3 is viewed as an inefficient, body-draining form. 1 35
Abilities & Skills
Ki Manipulation
Saiyans can project, suppress, sense, and control ki, though mastery requires extensive training.
- Li Ming fires energy waves immediately after acquiring the Saiyan bloodline. 1
- Ki perception becomes possible after weighted training and self-control practice. 3
- Strong ki can be concealed, while overwhelming ki may become difficult for weaker sensitives to perceive properly. 6 9
- Ki control is necessary to prevent emotional instability as transformation power increases. 3
Combat Adaptation
Saiyans improve rapidly through training and battle, with combat serving as a major driver of growth.
- A Saiyan’s physique develops quickly through natural progression, training, and conquest. 1
- Goku exemplifies combat-driven growth, learning and improving at an exceptional rate during fights. 7
- Li Ming’s body grows stronger day by day after adulthood, particularly when paired with martial-arts instruction. 3
Flight
Saiyans can use ki to fly once they have sufficient control. Li Ming travels by flight across Earth and in planetary atmospheres. 4 10
Instant Transmission
Li Ming obtains Instant Transmission through Porunga’s wish and uses energy signatures to relocate instantly. 24
- Requires a precise ki signature, especially over long distances. 24 31
- Greatly improves a Saiyan’s mobility and survival prospects against stronger opponents. 24
Known Saiyans
- Li Ming — Holder of the High-Level Saiyan Bloodline; trains in ki control, creates Berserk Transformation, and pursues Super Saiyan transformation. 1 15 32
- Son Goku — A low-class Saiyan raised on Earth; combines Saiyan battle instinct with Earthling kindness and possesses extraordinary martial-arts growth. 6 7
- Vegeta — Prince of the Saiyans; a high-class warrior defined by pride and ambition to become a Super Saiyan and overthrow Frieza. 15 21
- Nappa — A high-class Saiyan whose battle power is described as roughly six to seven thousand in his prime. 1
- Raditz — A surviving low-class Saiyan with a stated battle power of 1,200. 13
- Turles — A surviving Saiyan resembling Goku, characterized as more savage, sinister, and unscrupulous. 22
Trivia
- Saiyans are not naturally invincible: without proper cultivation, even a powerful bloodline may leave an adult Saiyan weaker than common cosmic soldiers. 1
- The novel treats martial-arts mastery as essential to unlocking the upper limits of Saiyan potential, rather than relying on bloodline alone. 3
- Li Ming considers a Saiyan’s tail both an inconvenience and a vital component of their power. 2 48
