Background / History

Ai was originally known as Shiho Miyano, a scientist working for the Black Organization. After the organization murdered her sister, Miyano Akemi, Shiho was imprisoned in a gas chamber, grieving and resigned to death. She initially considered messages from Lin Yu’s chat group a hallucination before Lin Yu came to rescue her. 2 3 4

The effects of the drug being used on her had already begun when Lin Yu found her unconscious. He took her from the gas chamber and sheltered her at Kudo Shinichi’s home. 4

After Lin Yu apologized for upsetting her, Shiho chose the name Ai Haibara and began using it thereafter. 17

Ai’s earlier experiment with APTX4869 had left her in a child’s body. The Dog and Horse Talismans later restored her to her normal adult body and appearance. 21 22

Her grief over Akemi remained central to her actions. When Shenron could not directly revive Akemi because her body had been reduced to ashes, Ai chose the alternative of having Akemi’s soul reincarnated in her womb rather than waiting a year for reconstruction. 23 41 42

Appearance

Ai is described as exceptionally beautiful, with fair skin and bright eyes that became dull and vacant during her captivity. While affected by APTX4869, she appeared as a child; the Dog and Horse Talismans restored her adult form. 3 21 22

Personality

Despite this temper, she is compassionate and loyal. She worries deeply for Ran Mouri during combat, assists the injured without hesitation, and remains devoted to finding a way to bring Akemi back. 23 37 38 42

She is also resourceful and guarded. When Akako asks about the origin of her talismans, Ai refuses to reveal their source. 35

Following a dispute with Lin Yu, she adopts “Ai Haibara” as her new name. She remains fiercely protective of her relationship with him, particularly when Ran becomes involved. 17 19

Life with Ran Mouri

Ai and Ran privately discuss their situation and agree to accept one another’s presence with Lin Yu, on the condition that he not pursue further women. 21

Talisman Restoration

Lin Yu gives Ai the Dog and Horse Talismans. Their fusion restores her adult form, grants her immortality and healing powers, and equips her for later supernatural threats. 22

Luxury Hotel Earthbound Spirit Incident

Ai protects the hotel group with the Golden Light Protection Talisman, burns the earthbound spirit with a flame talisman, and heals Megure’s injured officers with the Horse Talisman. 35 36 37

Akemi’s Reincarnation

Ai joins Lin Yu, Ran, and Akako in summoning Shenron to revive Akemi. After direct resurrection fails, Ai chooses for Akemi’s soul to reincarnate in her womb. 41 42
