Akako introduces herself at the Jaren Hotel as the inheritor of Red Magic. Investigating an earthbound spirit created from the centuries-old resentment of a dead person, she seeks Ran Mouri's help after sensing extraordinary power within her. Akako admits that she lacks complete confidence in defeating the spirit alone. 30

During the earthbound-spirit incident, Akako identifies the head chef as a person who sacrificed victims and his own soul to the spirit. She fights alongside Ran and Ai Haibara, flying on a broomstick and using summoned lightning to disperse the spirit's manifested form. However, she correctly suspects that this apparent victory is incomplete when the spirit later possesses a police officer. 35 36
