Background / History

Iophis first appears pursuing Victor Corleone and Angoulême in retaliation for human wrongs against elves. Victor argues witcher neutrality and challenges Iophis's reasoning, eventually persuading him not to kill them and turning the encounter into a truce 26.

Afterward, Iophis defends Victor to Toluvel, arguing that Victor's habits, speech, and background mark him as an outsider with no direct connection to local human-elf hatred. He is particularly amused by Victor's daily bathing and cleanliness, calling it something he has never seen in a witcher apprentice 27.

Years later, Iophis leads Squirrel Party forces in Floating Harbor Forest. He initially surrounds Victor and Angoulême at arrow-point because the area is tense after a deadly clash with Geralt and Vernon Roche, but he soon recognizes Victor and restores their old rapport 303.

Iophis shelters Letho of Gulet but warns Victor not to trust him too easily. When Victor asks to meet Letho, Iophis acts as an intermediary, later returning with Letho's blunt message: "Get lost" 303.

After Xilang reveals Letho's betrayal, Iophis cooperates with Geralt to confront the kingslayer. He allows Geralt to pretend to capture him as bait, using the plan to test Letho's reaction 310 313.

During the battle at the Karmew Ruins, Iophis is targeted by Vernon Roche. Victor intervenes with Aard to stop Roche from capturing him, openly declaring Iophis his friend 313. Iophis later introduces Victor to Lansi as his brother, repeating Victor's own phrase that their relationship is built on mutual respect and understanding 314.

In Floating Harbor, Iophis prepares the Squirrel Party to attack while Roche launches his own operation against Loredo. Victor refuses to join an attack on the town, but Iophis remains connected to the broader overthrow of Loredo's regime 316 320.

Iophis later travels to Vergen, where he supports Saskia's cause and describes her as the best leader he has ever met. He believes her vision of equality between humans and nonhumans is genuine, comparing it to Victor's own refusal to see elves as inferior 327 346.

At Loc Muinne, Iophis works with Victor to investigate Philippa Eilhart and Saskia's manipulation. He remains deeply loyal to Saskia even after learning she is a dragon, arguing that Vergen cannot do without her 371 372.

After Philippa escapes and Saskia is freed from control, Iophis shows relief rather than blame, insisting that Saskia's actions were the sorceress's fault and that her survival matters most 378.

Appearance

Iophis is an elven commander with a prominent facial scar. He is repeatedly shown armed for guerrilla warfare, carrying elven blades and a bow 303 312.

  • Disfiguring scar running from cheek to lips 303
  • Wears studded leather armor 312
  • Carries two elven scimitars at his waist 312
  • Carries a longbow on his back 312
  • Commands elves who operate with bows, ambushes, and forest tactics 303 313

Personality

Iophis is stern, suspicious, and shaped by elven suffering, but he is not portrayed as unreasonable. Victor survives their first confrontation by recognizing that Iophis is a "qualified guerrilla leader" who will listen if the conversation is steered properly 26.

He is proud and hostile toward humans, often speaking with contempt about human cruelty, hypocrisy, and prejudice. Even so, he can distinguish individuals from groups: he accepts Victor because Victor treats elves as equals and because Victor's conduct proves he is not merely exploiting nonhumans 27 327.

Iophis values loyalty intensely. He refuses to betray Letho while Letho is under his protection, even when Victor presses him for information 310. Once Letho's betrayal becomes clear, Iophis turns against him, but his change comes through evidence rather than convenience 310 313.

He also has a teasing, dry sense of humor. With Victor, he banters easily, mocks him for soft-heartedness, and laughs at their private jokes about "mutual respect and understanding" 303 314 323.
