Background / History
Misaka's childhood DNA map, originally provided to a medical institution for muscular-dystrophy research, was repurposed for military experimentation. After Rod directs her to investigate the Railgun Clone Project, she uncovers the misuse and begins destroying the involved laboratories alone, ultimately clearing ten facilities despite exhaustion and injuries from ITEM 5 10.
She discovers that her clones are being used in the Level 6 Shift Project, a planned series of 20,000 battles intended to evolve Accelerator into Level 6. The revelation that the Sisters were created as disposable test subjects devastates her 11 12.
Following Rod's defeat of Accelerator, Misaka learns that the Level 6 Shift Project has ended, that the Sisters will be dispersed around the world, and that Heaven Canceller will address their genetic problems. Overwhelmed by survivor's guilt, she finally breaks down while Rod comforts her 16.
After learning of Suzushina Yuriko's role in saving Last Order and preventing the Sisters from receiving a virus, Mikoto remains conflicted by Yuriko's previous crimes against the Sisters. She ultimately challenges Yuriko to a fair fight and, after defeating her with the power Rod gave her, chooses to spare her at Last Order's request 160 163.
During the Daihasei Festival, Mikoto excels in Tokiwadai's events and later leads her team against Sakugawa Middle School in a playoff. Her victory over Saten Ruiko earns her the tournament championship and the special reward offered by Rod 319 320 328.
Rod subsequently grants Mikoto Level 6 power. Her awakening transforms her into a being of dense electromagnetic energy whose calculations and control extend across the world, allowing her to mobilize the Misaka Network on a planetary scale 329 331.
Appearance
Misaka is a young girl whose electricity manifests as blue-white arcs around her body, often lifting her bangs when she prepares to fight 3 4.
- Often wears casual black clothes and a baseball cap while covertly attacking laboratories 10.
- Carries game coins for use as Railgun projectiles 4.
- Uses a Gekota-themed phone and values Gekota merchandise 10 19.
- Wears safety shorts beneath her skirt 36 56.
- While awakened as Level 6, her physical body becomes a semi-translucent form made from a high-density electromagnetic field, with flowing blue-white energy in place of ordinary hair 329.

Personality
Misaka is fiercely competitive, hot-tempered, and eager to challenge powerful opponents. Upon witnessing Rod's speed, she immediately demands a duel; even after he neutralizes several attacks, she continues escalating the fight rather than backing down 3 4.
Her aggression is tempered by strong compassion and responsibility. She takes personal blame for the suffering caused by the cloning project, risks herself to destroy its laboratories, and is deeply distressed by the fate of the Misaka Sisters 10 14 16. She also cares for strangers, helps Kiyama Harumi when she is publicly embarrassed, and later protects Kiyama from immediate arrest after learning her motives 23 38 43.
Misaka is prone to embarrassment around Rod, particularly when he addresses her by name. She also becomes noticeably jealous when she compares herself to more mature women or to Kazakiri Hyouka 21 30 41 43.
Despite her anger toward Suzushina Yuriko for killing the Sisters, Mikoto refuses to let revenge determine her actions. Faced with the chance to let Yuriko die, she withdraws her dark lightning after Last Order pleads for her life 163.
Mikoto initially struggles to recognize her romantic feelings for Rod, but realizes that she loves him after learning that Saten Ruiko is dating him. Rod's later public declaration that Mikoto is his girlfriend leaves her intensely flustered, though secretly happy to be acknowledged 146 316.
At Level 6, Mikoto gains an inhumanly calm perception of physical laws and matter, yet her attachment to Rod remains central to her behavior; after awakening, she immediately seeks comfort in his embrace 329 330.
