Background / History

Ruiko lived with pressure from her family’s expectations and struggled with being unable to improve her esper ability. Although she maintained a bright, cheerful demeanor, she privately feared that powerless people were “defective products.” 25 29 36

During a bank-robbery incident, Ruiko rushed to protect a child being taken hostage, grabbing onto him despite the robber threatening to kick her. Rod intervened before she was hurt. The child’s mother thanked Ruiko, while the child gave her a Gekota doll, which she passed on to Misaka Mikoto. 20 21

Rod was impressed by her instinctive courage, describing her as “ordinary yet dazzling” and resolving to give her a trial through which she could gain power of her own. 21

After learning that cursed techniques were innate and could not simply be learned, Ruiko was deeply disappointed. She nevertheless accepted encouragement from Rod, Uiharu, and her friends, though her longing for an ability remained unresolved. 25

Rod later told Ruiko and Frenda about Level Upper and its connection to Kiyama Harumi’s attempt to save comatose children. Learning of Academy City’s indifference to those children shattered Ruiko’s naïve assumptions about the city and about Rod’s motives. 28

Despite knowing that Level Upper could leave users comatose or cause them to lose their powers, Ruiko chose to use it.
