Background / History

Shiryu serves as Impel Down’s Chief Guard when Nangong Yan seeks him out. His relationship with Magellan has deteriorated so far that he believes a confrontation would become unavoidable if he remained at the prison 56 59.

Nangong Yan offers him a place in the Demon Emperor Pirates, promising strong swordsmen to challenge and freedom to kill as long as he obeys orders. Shiryu agrees to join if Nangong Yan defeats him, and the two leave Impel Down through Kamui to duel on a remote rocky islet. After losing, Shiryu honors the agreement and recognizes Nangong Yan as his captain 56 57 58 59.

His familiarity with Infinite Hell immediately helps the crew’s recruitment effort. He warns that older prisoners such as Byrnndi World and Naguri are unlikely to submit sincerely without overwhelming strength, while recently imprisoned pirates may be more receptive to freedom and Nangong Yan’s reputation 59.

Appearance

Shiryu is substantially taller than Nangong Yan—even seated, he rises more than a head above him. He retains his Impel Down attire long after becoming a pirate 59 284.

  • Clothing: Impel Down cap beneath a flight cap, black overcoat, and black cloak bearing the prison’s emblem at his first meeting with Nangong Yan 56.
  • Accessories: Usually carries a cigar between his teeth and a sword at his waist 56 180 284.
  • Expression and presence: Cold, indifferent face, sharp gaze, and a lingering scent of blood 180 284.
  • Life-Slaying Sword Demon: Entirely blood-red eyes, scarlet hair, and a surrounding blood mist 128.
  • Blood Asura: Three red facial markings extending from chin to the top of his head, a shifting scarlet cloak, and jagged blood flames along Styx 207.
  • Man-Sword Unity: Lengthened red hair, blood-colored markings across his cheeks and neck, elongated nails, sword shapes within his eyes, and crimson clothing 287 309.

Personality

Shiryu’s interests center almost entirely on swordsmanship and slaughter. He favors immediate confrontation, measures obstacles by strength, and prefers solving problems directly with his blade. In battle, his outward indifference can persist even while he drains corpses of blood 68 125 179 194.

His brutality is not governed by moral distinctions. In Drum Kingdom, he kills everyone who resists him, including Dalton when he attempts to protect Wapol. The narration notes that he may also kill nonresisting people when inclined to slaughter; Nangong Yan’s presence and explicit orders are the principal restraints on him 125.

Despite this, Shiryu takes promises seriously. He joins Nangong Yan after losing their agreed duel and follows commands immediately—even stopping Murasame Maru an inch from Morgans’ neck when ordered. His devotion and narrow ambitions make him especially trusted by his captain 59 154 179.

Strong swordsmen excite him enough to challenge his self-control. He offers Mihawk a valuable favor for the opportunity to fight Orochi first, admitting that he might otherwise interrupt their duel. Yet he can accept a nonlethal contest when the opponent is not an enemy 308 309.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Shiryu follows an economical killing style built around speed, precision, and ruthlessness. His attacks target vital points without unnecessary movement 57 127 286.

  • Close combat: His greatest specialty; he overwhelms Akainu once their prolonged duel moves into close quarters 182.
  • Ranged sword energy: Projects enormous crimson slashes capable of splitting waves, cutting through magma attacks, and severing part of Thunder God Island 58 182.
  • Technical mastery: Uses basic thrusts, hooks, twists, slashes, and other movements to counter Orochi’s eight-sword assault with a single blade 308.
  • Unarmed sword energy: Releases a crimson sword light through an Armament-coated finger to cut apart Vegapunk’s incoming iron spear 244.
  • Defensive sword circle: Creates an all-around barrier that blocks Jack’s spreading, life-draining ripples 69.

Armament Haki and Killing Intent

Shiryu combines Haki with a sword intent so oppressive that experienced fighters can lose their willingness to resist 68 154.

  • Coats his blades in dense Armament Haki during clashes with Jack, Mihawk, and Akainu 68 127 181.
  • Concentrates Haki at his forehead to withstand Mihawk’s small-blade attack, though the strike still draws blood 287.
  • His murderous aura affects several hundred meters and contributes to his reputation as the “Life-Slaying Swordsman” 154.
  • His fastest transformed attacks exceed the detection speed of most Observation Haki, although Nangong Yan can track them with the Mangekyō Sharingan 58.

Geppo and Physical Endurance

Shiryu uses Geppo to move through the air, fight over the sea, and pursue retreating enemies 58 59 195.

  • Travels through Drum Kingdom’s blizzard by repeatedly kicking off the air 125.
  • Sustains combat against Akainu for three days and three nights while also contending with Thunder God Island’s lightning 182.
  • After covering the fleet’s escape from Aokiji, launches final blocking slashes and returns to his ship through the air 195.

Life-Slaying Sword Demon

Shiryu feeds his own blood to Murasame Maru, intensifying the blade’s power and entering a blood-soaked combat state 57 128.

  • Initially increases his speed by approximately 30% and gives him Admiral-level strength 58.
  • Later refinement produces completely crimson eyes, scarlet hair, and an opening thrust roughly half again as powerful as before 128.
  • Heightens bloodlust and threatens mental control; during the Mihawk duel, his mind has not yet been completely consumed 128.

Styx: Blood Manipulation and Healing

Styx manipulates blood, sustains its wielder, and interferes with an opponent’s mind. Its abilities are strongest in close combat 181.

  • Blood absorption: Draws spilled blood and blood from corpses into the blade, converting it into stamina for Shiryu 181 194.
  • Vampiric Healing: Sends life essence into his body through blood threads extending from the hilt. His wounds heal rapidly, but more slowly than through Nangong Yan’s Heal-Heal Fruit 287 288.
  • Persistent wounds: Injuries caused by Styx carry blood flames and continue bleeding; ordinary medicine cannot stop them 181.
  • Regeneration interference: Marco’s Phoenix Fruit healing consumes twice its usual stamina when treating Styx-inflicted injuries 207.
  • Mental disruption: Magnifies evil thoughts and can cause a momentary lapse. Shiryu exploits such a lapse to land the decisive strike against Akainu 181 182.
  • Self-repair: The blade can absorb iron ions from blood to repair itself 287.
  • Limits: Long-range fighting prevents its abilities from displaying their full power. Its evil influence also makes mastering it dangerous 179 181.

Blood Asura

Developed after obtaining Styx, Blood Asura wraps Shiryu in a changing cloak of blood flames and alters his face and blade 207.

  • Draws blood from the ground within a thousand-meter radius into the cloak 207.
  • Used against Marco and Vista together after Shiryu gains the advantage over Marco alone 207.
  • Accompanies his newest killing technique, designed for opponents close enough to his strength to keep him occupied 207.

Man-Sword Unity

Shiryu’s strongest combat state merges him with Styx through blood-flame tendrils. It builds on Life-Slaying Sword Demon and his accumulated understanding of both swordsmanship and the cursed blade 287.

  • Intensifies his killing intent, transforms his body, and turns the sky blood-red 287 309.
  • Allows him to sense Styx’s will and pursue an uncompromising battle to the death 287.
  • Reduces his rationality to little more than the ability to distinguish friend from foe. His style abandons defense for potentially suicidal attacks 287.
  • Its combination with Styx’s healing makes exchanges of severe wounds especially dangerous for opponents 287.
  • Against Orochi, his sword-like charge leaves faint cracks in space along its path 309.

Named Sword Techniques

  • Blood Shadow Raging Waves — Used during his recruitment duel and later against Mihawk 58 128.
  • Tiger Climbs the Mountain — Used in his earlier duel with Mihawk 128.
  • Demon Blood Stains the Sky — His ultimate attack during the recruitment duel; countered by Nangong Yan’s Burning Three Powers Strike 58.
  • Life-Killing Sword — Hinders Jack’s recovery during their confrontation 68.
  • Heart-Eroding Blood Flame — Used while attacking Aokiji’s fleet 194.
  • Flash Shadow Blood-Slaughter Sword — Surrounds Marco and Vista with scarlet phantoms, holding a lethal strike in reserve and forcing them to maintain exhausting vigilance 207.
  • Death Blood Refinement — Consumes stored blood essence to release heatless, life-extinguishing blood flames 286.
  • Slaughtering Bloodflame — Counters Orochi’s toxic swamp with blood flames that harm him 309.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Murasame Maru — His original cursed longsword. It becomes sharper and more powerful after years of drinking strong opponents’ blood and serves as the medium for Life-Slaying Sword Demon 56 119 128.
  • Seven Star Sword — A legendary demonic blade from Asuka Island, comparable in power to a Supreme Grade Blade despite not being ranked among them. Nangong Yan first offers it to Shiryu during recruitment; Shiryu accepts it later and struggles against its influence 59 119.
  • Styx — Forged by combining Murasame Maru, the Seven Star Sword, and precious materials with the expertise of numerous craftsmen. Shiryu subdues it before the Thunder God Island battle; Mihawk calls it the strongest cursed blade he has encountered 177 179 181 288.
  • Healing Water — Gives a portion to the defeated Mihawk, allowing him to recover before their recruitment discussion concludes 288.

Relationships

  • Nangong Yan — Captain and most trusted superior. Shiryu honors their recruitment agreement, carries out executions and sensitive assignments, and becomes Nangong Yan’s right-hand man 59 154 179 289.
  • Dracule Mihawk — Recurring rival and eventual crewmate. Shiryu defeats him for the World’s Greatest Swordsman title, recruits him as a guest officer, and welcomes future challenges 288.
  • Byrnndi World — Fellow commander and former rival for the First Division position. Their early rankings alternate, but World eventually fails repeatedly to displace Shiryu 73 119 127.
  • Magellan — Former Impel Down colleague whose increasing disapproval contributes to Shiryu’s decision to leave 59.
  • Vegapunk — Fellow powerhouse and sparring partner. They show courtesy before their duel, though Vegapunk’s speed and electromagnetic control make closing the distance difficult for Shiryu 243 244.
  • Orochi — Wano’s shogun and a coveted swordsmanship opponent. Shiryu presses him into accepting a duel, but agrees that they need not fight to the death because they are not enemies 308 309.
