Background / History

As Fleet Admiral, Sengoku received the first reports of Gato's Ten-Tails-related ability and judged him exceptionally dangerous after learning that he had hunted a Sea King immediately after setting sail. Sengoku's initial policy was to recruit Gato if possible, but to kill or imprison him if he refused and became a pirate threat. 17

Gato's defeat of Rear Admiral Drake forced Sengoku to reassess him as an unprecedented variable. He issued Gato a 200-million-Beli bounty to deter East Blue Marines from provoking him, then dispatched Garp with orders to capture him alive for recruitment rather than kill him. Sengoku believed Gato had not yet committed evil acts beyond self-defense and could become a pillar of the Marines. 32 33

After Gato repeatedly escaped Marine pressure, Sengoku concluded that any future encounter would likely be a fight to the death. He later shifted his attention toward investigating Ace's identity as Roger's son, delegating Gato-related reports to Garp. 42 117 119

Sengoku objected strongly when a P0 agent informed him that the World Government intended to appoint Gato as a Shichibukai. He nevertheless accepted that the decision was outside Marine authority and recalled Garp from his pursuit. 151

During Dragon's public execution, Gato's deception turned the event into an embarrassment for the Marines and World Government. Sengoku responded by redirecting the assembled forces toward Ace and the Whitebeard Pirates, publicly framing Ace's capture as the means to end the Great Pirate Era. 210

At the ensuing Summit War, Sengoku coordinated the Marines' layered assault, deployed their highest-ranking fighters, and later entered the battle himself. He intercepted Gato's group before they could reach the top-level battlefield and transformed into a golden Buddha to fight Gato's clone forces. 213 217 218

Gato's clone legion then unleashed Nine Lava Rivers over the battlefield. Sengoku abandoned his pursuit of Gato to protect the troops below, using repeated shockwaves to hold back the descending lava and rallying both Marines and pirates to weaken it together. 219 221 222

The war exposed the limits of Sengoku's preparations: Gato's clone army devastated the Marines' vice-admiral-level forces and humiliated the World Government. Sengoku resigned as Fleet Admiral afterward, with Aokiji succeeding him. 224 He was later killed in the final conflict and remade into Gato's Preta Path. 227

He can be ruthless when preserving the Marines' position demands it. After the execution fiasco, he used Ace's identity to seize the narrative and launch a war against the Whitebeard Pirates, despite foreseeing severe casualties. 210

Despite this pragmatism, Sengoku values the lives and future potential of Marine soldiers. During the Nine Lava Rivers crisis, he chose to save the battlefield's trapped combatants rather than secure his own safety or continue pursuing Gato. 220 221 222
