Background / History

Arlong led the Arlong Pirates from Arlong Park, a grand and luxurious compound financed through years of extortion. His crew controlled Cocoyasi Village for eight years, demanding protection fees while draining the town of its prosperity and spirit. He also maintained an arrangement with corrupt Marines, which kept his bounty below his actual threat level and allowed him to operate openly in the East Blue. 28

His crew had spent over a decade building its power and wealth. Arlong regarded fish-men as superior to humans and reacted with particular fury when Gato admitted to killing Kuroobi, dismissing Gato as a “lowly human.” 30

Fish-Man Physiology

As a fish-man, Arlong possessed physical strength and mobility beyond ordinary humans. His crew could escape especially effectively through water; Hachi and another fish-man evaded Gato by diving into Arlong Park’s pool. 30

Cocoyasi and Arlong Park

Gato selected Arlong as a target because he believed him to be the richest man in the East Blue. 27

After arriving in Cocoyasi, Gato forced a villager to guide him to Arlong Park. He cut through the compound’s gates, prompting Arlong to send Kuroobi to investigate. 29

Kuroobi was killed almost immediately, but Arlong initially refused to recognize the scale of the threat. He ordered his combatants to surround Gato rather than personally coordinating a decisive response with his strongest remaining subordinates. 30

Gato slaughtered nearly the entire Arlong Pirates crew in a matter of minutes. Hachi and another surviving fish-man escaped through the water, leaving Arlong to launch a frantic final charge alone. Gato killed him with ease, ending the Arlong Pirates’ decade-long foundation in a single day. 30

Aftermath

Arlong’s death ended his control over Cocoyasi Village, though Gato’s assault left Nami traumatized by the bodies and bloodshed throughout Arlong Park. 30 31

Gato subsequently took Arlong’s hoard: over one hundred million Beli, rare corals and pearls, strange metals, and two exceptionally durable branches believed to be from Treasure Tree Adam. 32
