Chiyu used the Witness System to master Thunder Breathing, befriended Kushina Uzumaki, and awakened his Two-Tomoe Sharingan while defending her. After passing the Ninja Academy graduation exam, he began training under Orochimaru and entered his underground base.

Orochimaru trained Chiyu, who grew stronger while confronting Konoha’s brewing war and rescuing Kushina from Kumogakure kidnappers. After Chiyu was promoted to Chunin, he joined Orochimaru at the Land of Hot Water front and helped devise a surprise attack against Kumogakure.

• Orochimaru trained Chiyu in combat and ninjutsu, then sent him on a mission to eliminate bandits, which Chiyu completed with lethal traps and elemental attacks.
• Orochimaru brought Chiyu back to Konoha, where Hiruzen Sarutobi warned that clashes with rival villages could soon escalate into war.
• Chiyu visited Kushina and spoke privately with Mito Uzumaki, who confronted him about Kushina’s future as the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki.

Chiyu helped Orochimaru drive the Cloud Ninja out of Hidden Hot Water Village, then led Konoha’s retreat until reinforcements arrived. With the force regrouped, Chiyu accepted command of five Uchiha Chunin and immediately faced their resistance.

• Orochimaru launched a surprise attack on Hidden Hot Water Village, where Chiyu killed a Cloud Ninja commander and fought the Hot Water Ninja Leader, Kuroiwa Tatsuji, until Orochimaru forced the Cloud Ninja to withdraw.
• During the battle, Daigo sacrificed himself with Explosive Tags, and Minato Namikaze confronted Chiyu over his role in Daigo’s death.
• Orochimaru led the diminished Konoha force forward using clones, while Chiyu scouted, proposed tactics, and defeated Minato in a spar with his unfinished Godspeed technique.
• When about fifty Cloud Ninja approached, Chiyu led Konoha’s retreat, used Observation Haki to detect flanking squads, and killed the pursuers as Minato’s team dealt with the others.
• Chiyu’s force encountered Nara Shoji and roughly eighty Konoha reinforcements, who joined the fight and helped more than twenty Konoha ninja escape the encirclement.

Chiyu left the front lines for the Land of Grass, where he tried to find a surviving Uzumaki while taking Kakashi as his disciple and training him in Thunder Breathing. The arc ended with Hatake Sakumo preparing to intercept a Stone Ninja scroll as the great villages secretly met.

• Chiyu disciplined the defiant Uchiha, sent Uchiha Raito back to Konoha, and led the remaining four Uchiha on dangerous missions while secretly protecting them.
• After three years, Chiyu became a Jonin alongside Minato Namikaze and decided to transfer to the Land of Grass to search for Karin’s mother and prepare for the coming war.
• Chiyu sparred with Minato, then returned to Konoha, where Hiruzen Sarutobi approved his transfer and Danzo invited him to join Root.
• Chiyu told Mito Uzumaki he wanted to prevent Kushina from being forced to become the Nine-Tails’ Jinchuriki, then took Kushina into his care and promised to leave Konoha with her.
