Zhang Baidao first encounters Bai Yu around the Human-Faced Jade Infant Fruit Tree. Though he outwardly displays only Foundation Establishment-level cultivation, he survives Zhao Yun’s full-force strike with surprisingly little consequence, immediately making Bai Yu suspicious of his true foundation 37.

During the Heavenly Goat Mountain expedition, Zhang Baidao disguises himself as a dying, bandage-wrapped old man while lecherously observing the surrounding cultivators. Bai Yu recognizes that the act is false and becomes interested in obtaining the refinement method for Zhang’s peculiar Gu, which can make its user vanish while evading attacks and restrictions 73.

Zhang Baidao is later shown to have independently refined another Divine Baleful Gu after Bai Yu obtained the original. Although Zhang’s version is inferior, it possesses the same fortune-consuming qualities and allows him to escape through techniques such as Divine Baleful Hundred-Li Dash 75 194.

By the time Bai Yu finds him in the Eternal Abyss, Zhang Baidao has reached the peak of the Nascent Soul Realm. He identifies the Azure Ghost Clan as descendants or remnants of the ancient Moon Goddess Clan, recognizes the connection between Xiao Rongrong and the Talisman Ancestor, and explains the relationship between the Black Feather King and the Heart-Eroding Holy Empress 522 388 389.

Zhang Baidao increasingly attempts to establish a power structure centered on himself. Believing that fighting alone leaves him disadvantaged, he decides to recruit disciples and cultivation furnaces whom he can personally elevate through his methods and the Divine Baleful Gu. Before the events at the temple, Zhang Baidao and Bai Yu had already planned a hidden move using the Calamity Fruit as the foundation. Zhang Baidao secretly arranged the Heaven-Piercing Fortune-Devouring Grand Array throughout the temple, intending it as a decisive countermeasure against Li Ji, also known as A Luoyan 660.

Zhang Baidao also leaves a Heaven-Fortune Seizing formation within the Chaos Heaven Disk. Although Zhang initially dismisses his Human Emperor title, he eventually admits that he created the so-called Human Emperor Scripture merely to save face after failing to comprehend anything from a supreme Divine Mountain. Later, Zhang Baidao trades information with Bai Yu after receiving the Great Red Dust Joy Treasury Scripture.
