Background / History
The Heavenly Demon Sect is one of the dominant powers of the lower reaches, strong enough that no single member of the Three Mountains and Four Sects can shake it alone; a full alliance would be needed to challenge its position 25 269.
Its founder and sect master is Guan Yue, also known as Heavenly Demon Guan Yue, a legendary figure who once suppressed the heaven-defying geniuses of the Midstream and later became the Imperial/National Preceptor of the Blood Prison Dynasty 269. Guan Yue had already been a Tribulation Transcendence expert long before the Fallen River incident 269. The sect forcibly carved out a territory in the lower reaches with Blood Prison Dynasty support and built an unmatched foundation in roughly a thousand years 269.
The sect is openly infamous for buying or abducting menial disciples, taking furnace vessels, enslaving slaves, and seeking attendants. Bai Yu notes that the Heavenly Demon Sect differs from “righteous” sects mainly by making its exploitation explicit rather than hiding it behind moral language 1 25 66 202 211.
Its menial disciples are treated as expendable resources. They receive a lower contribution-point rate than ordinary disciples, face lethal assignments such as handling poisonous insects, and may remain menial disciples indefinitely if they fail to awaken spiritual roots 1 6 16. Conversely, the sect prizes freedom, directness, and the accumulation of strength; its elders explicitly reject the sanctimonious conduct associated with righteous sects 31.
Organization
Peaks and Lineages
The Heavenly Demon Sect is divided into multiple peaks, each holding its own core cultivation inheritance. These inheritances are not independent in origin: they are derived from the incomplete Heavenly Demon Chaos Scripture, with each peak preserving one portion of the sect’s true foundation 84 121.
Known peaks include:
- Blood Corpse Peak — centered on corpse refinement, blood qi, the Blood River Scripture, and the Blood River Body Tempering Art 84 121.
- Joyous Union Peak — led by Liu Qingli; fields many female cultivators and Blood Corpses during the Supreme Great Wall campaign 161 175 176.
- Gu Refining Peak — also led by Liu Qingli; tied to Gu methods, maintains foundational Gu inheritances, and is the peak where Bai Yu first served as a menial disciple 1 91 121.
- Ghost Refining Peak — associated with ghost-path methods; its peak master Yin San was once both Holy Son and Holy Maiden of the peak under the alias Yin Yingying 168.
- Beast Taming Peak — oversees spirit-beast trading and beast-control methods; it was mentioned as absent during the initial Supreme Great Wall deployment 126 176.
- Body Refining Peak — possesses the Gods and Devils Body Tempering Scripture, compared against Blood River Body Tempering Art 121.
- Medicine Refining Peak — one of the sect’s wealthy production peaks and the lineage of Li Xunhuan’s grandfather 1 92 158.
- Artifact Refining Peak — a major source of magical artifacts for the sect and one of its wealthiest peaks 1 92.
- Talisman-Making Peak — provides talisman-related exchanges and cultivation resources 92 116.
The sect possesses one hundred and eight foundational Gu insects, including the Heavenly Demon Soul-Devouring Gu 91. Each peak also maintains its own marketplace, where disciples trade materials, expedition gains, and sect resources 6.
Disciple Hierarchy
- Menial disciples — expendable laborers who receive inferior contribution-point rates and perform dangerous basic work 1 6.
- Ordinary/formal disciples — the sect’s recognized foundational disciples, who receive better treatment and undertake more substantial duties 6.
- Inner disciples — disciples with access to mountaintop areas, greater permissions, and advanced inheritance resources 91.
- Peak Holy Sons and Holy Maidens — representatives of individual peak lineages 300.
- Sect Holy Son — a sect-wide position above the individual peak titles in external missions and inter-sect affairs 300.
Leadership
- Guan Yue — Sect Master of the Heavenly Demon Sect and National Preceptor; founder of the sect, a Tribulation Transcendence expert, and the figure whose king conferral established the National Preceptor’s Residence 269 319.
- Liu Qingli — Peak Master of both Joyous Union Peak and Gu Refining Peak, as well as a Supreme Elder; a major decision-maker who reveals the sect’s deepest inheritance secrets to Bai Yu 121 159 161.
- Tu Kui — elder associated with Blood Corpse Peak; teaches Bai Yu the Blood River Scripture, preserves Blood Corpse Peak’s hidden foundation, and intervenes against the Myriad Sword Sect 83 84 430.
- Yin San / Yin Yingying — Ghost Refining Peak master; capable of taking responsibility for sect matters during the Supreme Great Wall campaign 168 176.
- Hua Liuli — Joyous Union Peak elder who oversees Blood Corpse deployments at the Supreme Great Wall and favors Bai Yu’s corpse-refining talent 176.
- Bai Yu — the sect-wide Holy Son and Guan Yue’s favored candidate for the future sect master position 270 300 430.
Core Inheritance
Heavenly Demon Chaos Scripture
The sect’s true foundation is the incomplete Heavenly Demon Chaos Scripture, from which the core arts of its peaks originate 121. Because the scripture is incomplete, the sect split its inheritance among different peak lineages, whose arts can complement one another 121.
Known associated paths and components include:
- Blood Dao
- Gu Dao
- Ghost Dao
- Dao of Desire
- Heavenly Demon Dao
- Chaos Demon God Body / Chaos Gods-and-Devils Body 500 501
The Heavenly Demon Sect does not possess the complete scripture in its institutional inheritance. It lacks the Heavenly Demon Scripture/Heavenly Demon Dao that fuses desire, blood, ghost, and gu paths, as well as the cultivation method for the Chaos Demon God Body 500 501. Bai Yu later obtained a complete Chaos Heavenly Demon Scripture inheritance independently, but this does not establish that the sect’s own archives have been completed 515.
Linked Secret Arts
Each scattered demonic scripture has a linked secret art. If cultivated to completion, the secret art may allow different demonic scriptures to be connected and cultivated together 121.
- The Blood River Body Tempering Art is the linked secret art of the Blood River Scripture 121.
- The Blood River Scripture creates a Blood River within the cultivator’s apertures; when cultivated alongside its linked body-tempering art, it can nourish blood god particles and strengthen both cultivation and physical power 85.
- Bai Yu is stated to be the only person in the sect’s history to successfully cultivate that secret art to the necessary level 121.
Guardian Artifacts
The Heavenly Demon Sect’s inheritance is guarded by four great immortal artifacts associated with its major paths 430.
- The Gu Dao and Alchemy Dao guardian artifacts were lost before the Heavenly Demon Sect was founded 430.
- The Artifact Dao guardian artifact remains in Guan Yue’s possession 430.
- The Eighteen Hells Pagoda Beads were the sect’s sole remaining Corpse Dao guardian artifact. Tu Kui bestowed them upon Bai Yu after recognizing his corpse-refining achievements 430 431.
- The Eighteen Hells Pagoda Beads were later refined with half of the Saha Heaven Evil Emperor’s heartblood and upgraded into a high-grade immortal artifact 586.
- The Divine Resentment Pearl, a supreme-grade spirit artifact from Artifact Refining Peak’s reserves and only a step below an immortal artifact, was deployed during the Black Feather Tribe campaign to suppress enemy cultivators 272.
Bai Yu later acquired the twelve Heavenly Demon Pillars, which form the matching peerless immortal artifact known as the Great Pagoda Heavenly Demon Pillar. The artifact can derive formations from the user’s understanding of the Heavenly Demon Chaos Scripture for slaughter, sealing, refinement, corpse refinement, Gu refinement, ghost forging, and desire control 515.
Lost Divine Abilities
The Demon Venerable later reveals that the Heavenly Demon Chaos Scripture once had demonic path divine abilities, but these were not preserved in the outside world 732. Named examples include:
- Chaos Heavenly Demon Palm
- Eighteen Demon Pillars
- Heavenly Passage Step
- God Suppression Art 732
The Demon Venerable states that the scripture’s nature allows its inheritor to derive divine abilities suited to their own accumulated foundations rather than relying solely on fixed techniques 732.
Political Position
Downstream Overlord
The Heavenly Demon Sect is one of the top sects of the lower reaches and shares the Downstream resource order with the Three Mountains and Four Sects through the backing of the National Preceptor’s Residence 269 319.
Despite being called a demonic sect, it forms part of a wider balance: Bai Yu argues that its existence gives righteous sects an external threat, helping them redirect internal contradictions and conceal their own exploitation of mortals through Great Medicine systems 202.
The Blood Prison Dynasty has only one lower-reach sect directly under its banner: the Heavenly Demon Sect. Alongside the other members of the Three Mountains and Four Sects, it is expected to help maintain lower-reach stability and deal with people corrupted into monsters by Great Medicine 167.
Blood Prison Dynasty Subordination
Although powerful in the Downstream, the Heavenly Demon Sect cannot ignore Midstream authority. A single imperial decree from the Blood Prison Dynasty throws the entire sect into turmoil and forces it to participate in defending the Supreme Great Wall 160 161.
The sect had previously been exempt from Supreme Great Wall duties by Demon Emperor decree, but this exemption is revoked, implying shifting politics within the Blood Prison Dynasty 160 161. Guan Yue normally remains in the Blood Prison Dynasty’s Imperial Preceptor Hall with roughly half of the sect’s strength, where he contests for the sect’s influence and voice within the dynasty 161.
National Preceptor's Residence
The National Preceptor’s Residence is supported by the foundations of the Heavenly Demon Sect, Evil Moon Sect, and Netherworld Sect 428. Guan Yue clearly favors the Heavenly Demon Sect, having stationed it in the Downstream and allowed it to monopolize many benefits, which later creates tension over King Conferral Ceremony slots 428.
Guan Yue’s own king conferral enabled the establishment of the National Preceptor’s Residence. Through its backing, the Heavenly Demon Sect secured its place in the Downstream and shared its resources with the Three Mountains and Four Sects 319.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Sect Context
The sect is introduced as part of the cultivation order surrounding the Three Mountains and Four Sects. Its reputation as a demonic sect stems from openly coercive disciple recruitment and exploitation, though the narrative repeatedly compares this with the hidden cruelty of righteous sects 9 25 66.
Bai Yu is forcibly brought into the sect and assigned to Gu Refining Peak, where the high death rate among menial disciples demonstrates the sect’s brutal internal hierarchy 1. The sect’s policy generally leaves disciples free to seek personal gains and pursue relationships or resources as they please, provided they can bear the consequences 31 33.
Conflict with the Myriad Sword Sect
The Heavenly Demon Sect and Myriad Sword Sect are openly hostile. After Bai Yu seizes Heavenly Goat Mountain from Myriad Sword Sect territory, Elder Yellow Sand attacks him, but Tu Kui intervenes, kills Yellow Sand, and escalates the conflict 81 83 157.
Later, Myriad Sword Sect elder Wu Mie tries to force Heavenly Demon Sect disciples to submit to inspection at the Vast Sky Forbidden Land. Bai Yu refuses, stating that the sect has no obligation to cooperate with unreasonable demands 157 158. Liu Qingli subsequently confronts Wu Mie and the other sect representatives to protect the Heavenly Demon Sect disciples, before the Myriad Sword Sect Master intervenes and prevents open conflict 159.
Supreme Great Wall Deployment
The Blood Prison Dynasty orders the Heavenly Demon Sect and its subordinate forces to join the Supreme Great Wall defense within three days 160. Liu Qingli assigns Bai Yu, Li Xunhuan, Li Shishi, and Qin Yuxi to the mission and grants them contribution points and treasury access for preparation 161.
At the Great Wall, the Demon Prison Legion initially looks down on the Heavenly Demon Sect and assigns its disciples to a dangerous defense section with poor supply arrangements 173 174. The sect proves its value when Joyous Union Peak’s Blood Corpses repel a monster tide, leading Sun Teng to reassess the sect’s methods as strategic resources 175 176.
Following the battle, Hua Liuli reorganizes the deployment so that unsuitable combatants—including alchemists, pharmacists, and artifact refiners—serve more useful logistical roles rather than being wasted on the front line 176. Sect disciples also establish trade networks in Demon-Suppressing City, profiting from the collection and sale of monster remnant souls and related supplies 183 273.
Fallen River and the Black Feather Campaign
Guan Yue personally appears during the Fallen River crisis, suppresses the Black Feather King, seals her main soul to Feng Mountain, and appoints Bai Yu as the Heavenly Demon Sect’s Holy Son 270.
The sect subsequently attacks the Black Feather Tribe and twelve neighboring tribes. Its disciples kill, enslave, and harvest the tribes’ members as cultivation resources, while their wealth becomes spoils for the sect’s continued expansion 272. Guan Yue deploys the Divine Resentment Pearl to suppress the tribes’ cultivators during the campaign 272.
Bai Yu Becomes Holy Son
Bai Yu is appointed the Heavenly Demon Sect’s newly recognized Holy Son after his achievements and potential draw Guan Yue’s attention 269 270 300. Guan Yue grants him Feng Mountain and the sealed Black Feather King as rewards for the appointment 270.
Although each peak has its own Holy Son or Holy Maiden, Bai Yu’s sect-wide title carries greater weight in inter-faction missions 300. He represents the sect in the mission to investigate the evolving Undying Mountain alongside the Holy Sons and Holy Maidens of the other lower-reach powers 301 302.
As Holy Son, Bai Yu becomes the sect’s sole younger-generation representative in the King Conferral Ceremony, while the Evil Moon Sect and Netherworld Sect divide the remaining National Preceptor’s Residence slots 428. Guan Yue’s later decision to support Bai Yu as a candidate for the future sect master position provokes an uproar among the three affiliated sects 430.
Midstream Expansion
The Heavenly Demon Sect seeks to grow beyond the Downstream by gaining a firmer foothold in the Midstream. Liu Qingli explains that the National Preceptor’s Residence alone is insufficient, and Bai Yu is selected as a seed candidate for king conferral 317 319.
The sect supports Bai Yu’s territorial ambitions, including the development of the Feather Spirit Dynasty and construction of a super teleportation array located within the Heavenly Demon Sect, a matter considered earth-shaking for the Downstream 357 603. The Feather Spirit Dynasty’s establishment gives the National Preceptor’s Residence access to the former Holy Heaven Dynasty’s commercial foundations and substantially strengthens the Heavenly Demon Sect’s wider position 355.
Crisis and Seclusion of the Upper Ranks
Later, Guan Yue leads many experts from the Heavenly Demon Sect, Evil Moon Sect, and Netherworld Sect back to the Downstream under the pretext of strengthening the sect, while the National Preceptor’s Residence becomes unusually quiet amid Blood Prison Dynasty turmoil 604. The real reason is tied to disturbances in a forbidden ground and the need to reinforce a seal 605.
The sect also assists in relocating Bodhi Heart Academy after the academy reaches an agreement with the Feather Spirit Dynasty to jointly govern the former Red Dust Heart-Tempering Sect’s territory 630.

Notable Traits
- Openly demonic rather than hypocritically righteous; its methods are brutal but undisguised 66 202 211.
- Menial disciples are treated as replaceable consumables, while formal and inner disciples receive increasingly substantial resources and authority 1 6 91.
- Extremely proud disciples who refuse to expose their foundations under Myriad Sword Sect pressure 157.
- Possesses deep but incomplete inheritance tied to the Heavenly Demon Chaos Scripture 121 500 501.
- Its peak lineages enjoy broad autonomy and function in many respects like allied major forces under the overarching sect structure 1004.
- Militarily valuable due to corpse-refining methods, especially Blood Corpses adapted to battlefield use 175 176.
- Maintains major production and commercial lineages in Gu refinement, medicine refinement, artifact refinement, talisman making, beast taming, and Joyous Union cultivation 1 92.
- Strong enough that the lower-reach righteous sects must treat it as a collective threat rather than a target any one sect can suppress alone 269.
