Background / History
William was a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent assigned to investigate supernatural incidents at Lorenz Psychiatric Hospital. His investigation confirmed that Feng Buzhi's reported death was real, uncovered the hospital's connection to numerous disappearances, and led to his capture after he discovered too much. 305
He was imprisoned in an airtight “little black room” and subjected to a highest-level aptitude test. A reagent amplified every sensory input into agony; while enduring it, William unknowingly broke his bodily shackles. The hospital subsequently performed organ replacements on him without anesthesia, replacing at least his heart, marrow, and blood. 306 314
William awakened in Initial Town No. 74396 with a repaired body, abnormal learning speed, and an altered emotional state. Wallace explained the world and its race-based struggle for supremacy before Feng Buzhi appeared, identified William as potentially useful, removed his heart, and replaced it with a stronger one. Feng Buzhi kept William's original heart for himself. 314 315
Appearance
William is a blond, blue-eyed, handsome man. 493
- His body bears no visible surgical scars after arriving in the Abyss world, despite the extensive organ replacements performed at Lorenz Psychiatric Hospital. 314
- He initially appeared in a Lorenz Psychiatric Hospital patient uniform before changing into a black T-shirt and loose jeans taken from an unconscious arrival. 314
Personality
William is highly adaptable and unusually composed in the face of extreme circumstances. After waking in an unfamiliar world with altered organs and memories of torture, he quickly assessed his surroundings, concealed himself from Wallace, and investigated his own condition. 314
His experiences at Lorenz Psychiatric Hospital and under Cult Leader Feng have changed him. During the reincarnation ritual, William realizes that his desire to escape Feng has gradually become attachment and reverence, a transformation he finds disturbing but cannot easily reject. 341
He is patient when explaining the current world to Francis, pragmatic about cultivation, and cautious about accepting major opportunities such as a contract with Zdenek before consulting Feng Buzhi. 370
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Learning and Physical Adaptation
William's modified body and broken shackles grant him exceptional adaptability.
- Learned to ride a skateboard in seconds after initially failing to balance on it. 314
- Can correct his body unnaturally in midair and land safely. 314
- Possesses a mental “switch” that sharply improves the fluency of his thoughts, though maintaining it puts severe strain on his body. 315
- His arrival in the Abyss world repaired old injuries and allowed his replaced organs to fuse without visible scars. 314
Bizarre-Organ Control
William contains multiple bizarre entities and implanted powers, yet keeps them under unusually complete control.
- The reincarnation ritual substantially improved his control over the bizarre elements within his organs. 341
- Francis finds several bizarre entities in William's body, but notes that they behave “like obedient children” and can be perfectly controlled by William. 370
Riggs-Family Eyes
Francis grants William special eyes connected to the Riggs bloodline.
- Resist bizarre corruption. 367
- Accelerate spiritual-realm cultivation. 367
- Function as an additional bizarre organ. 367
- Serve as the key to Francis's hidden treasure. 367 368
Multi-Body Control
William can operate bodies across worlds with notable efficiency.
- Simultaneously controls bodies in both worlds more smoothly than ordinary researchers because he is a genuine cultivator. 576
- Correctly identifies the limitation in Zhao Liang's repeated body-creation and fusion process. 576
Relationships
- Feng Buzhi / Cult Leader Feng — Initially William's captor and the source of his forced organ modifications; later his registered master within the Human Sect. William's attachment to Feng grows despite his earlier wish to escape. 315 341 369
- Francis Flavio Riggs — William's grandfather, whose weakened spirit enters William's mind, grants him inherited eyes, and guides his cultivation. 367 369
- Wallace — Feng Buzhi's former attending physician and the manager of Initial Town No. 74396; he explains the Abyss world to William after their reunion. 314 315
- Ku Le — Frog-Man follower who becomes attached to William because remnants of Feng Buzhi's former organs remain within William. 365
