Nature
The Abyss is a vast and fundamentally singular existence. What appear to be separate patches or slivers of profound darkness are different perspectives of the same true Abyss, often associated with particular abyssal layers or planes 617 638.
It is linked to the Endless Abyss, whose conventional structure comprises ten known layers, from the unranked Fallen Plains through the ninth-rank Abyss Beyond the Shore. Normally, reaching deeper layers requires corresponding strength 229.
True Abyss
The true Abyss cannot be adequately perceived through ordinary senses. To Feng Buzhi, it appears simultaneously as an immeasurably vast existence and an infinitesimal point containing infinity; he later compares it more closely to a singularity than a black hole 525 616 640.
- Gazing into it creates an overwhelming sensation of falling and can shatter or incapacitate consciousnesses unprepared for it 147 523 616.
- It is associated with creation and destruction: it created everything, yet its eventual explosion threatens the worlds contained within it 617.
- Its destruction was projected to occur naturally in roughly 170 years before Feng Buzhi accelerated the process 640 647.
Slivers of Abyss
A sliver of Abyss typically manifests as a small patch or sphere of profound blackness. Individual slivers may be attached to abyssal planes and offer distinct perspectives on the true Abyss 557 638.
- Slivers can display differing levels of intelligence, activity, and resistance 396 551.
- Feng Buzhi's familiar sliver can connect to other slivers; it absorbed the Abyss associated with Dust Mountain's abyssal plane, becoming more profound without visibly increasing in size 557.
- A sliver can be divided to represent multiple abyssal planes, though Feng Buzhi later learns that these divisions do not mean there are multiple true Abysses 617.
Personal Abyss
Feng Buzhi discovers that an Abyss has been with him throughout his journey and later recognizes it as his exclusive or personal Abyss 521 522.
- It has a vague, pet-like or contractual connection to Feng Buzhi, but he initially cannot command it directly 522.
- When connected to the giant Abyss, it can understand language and communicate through unusual fluctuations; when disconnected, its intelligence becomes inactive and it mainly whistles 525.
- It reacts to Feng Buzhi's presence and intentions, but may become frightened or confused by his plans to accelerate the Abyss's detonation 551 617.
Manifestations
False Abyss
A False Abyss commonly manifests as a flesh-and-blood environment or a bottomless pit. It carries an intense compulsion to fall or jump into it, though Feng Buzhi can remain above it if he refuses to fall 150.
- A False Abyss may be the transformed result of an Abyss whistle rather than a direct appearance of the true Abyss 150.
- It can take the form of a fleshy passage connecting toward another level of the Abyss 396.
- It can interfere with observers’ minds; Pipi nearly jumped into one, while Cecily transformed to better resist its effects 150.
- Its form may communicate a concept or question rather than words. The False Abyss associated with Wang Chen, for example, conveyed the question of revenge 150.
Flesh-and-Blood Interfaces
Abyss Altars and related black crystals create flesh-and-blood rooms containing an eyeball and mouth. These interfaces verify identity, communicate through Eerie Whispers, and facilitate abyssal functions 35 81.
- The altar responds to aberrant whispers rather than ordinary speech 35.
- It can generate a strange entity suited to a user’s soul, which then merges into a random organ 31.
- Abyss Altars can be strengthened by Abyssal Inheritance and altered by the creation of new eerie organs 64 70 279.
Abilities & Functions
Communication and Whistling
The Abyss can respond to calls, though its responses are inconsistent and may depend on context or frequency of contact 150 414.
- Feng Buzhi’s title “True: Gazing into the Abyss” allows him to call to it with a chance of receiving a response 150.
- Its most characteristic response is a short whistle, which may then manifest as a False Abyss 150.
- It can later communicate more clearly through strange text, fluctuations, and wish-related responses 523 525.
- Repeated direct address may cause the personal Abyss to whistle rather than converse 523.
Titles, Blessings, and Abyssal Legacy
The Abyss records accomplishments, grants titles, and distributes Abyssal Legacy.
- Feng Buzhi’s “True: Gazing into the Abyss” title weakens bizarre side effects and improves his control over bizarre phenomena; its earlier form also granted an Abyssal blessing upon rank advancement 48 150.
- New strange entities can be recorded in the Abyss Legacy, rewarding the Human Race with Abyssal Legacy and strengthening associated Abyss Altars 279.
- It can offer a wish in exchange for settlement rewards exceeding a specified threshold 523.
- It granted Feng Buzhi a mysterious creative power for the Fourth Calamity concept, leaving him with a debt of more than 290,000 Abyss Legacy 436.
Trials and Rewards
The Abyss hosts trials, including Deep Abyss Trials, and supplies scenario-specific rules and rewards 235 371 380.
- Trial participants may receive bodies, rapid power growth, ratings, rewards, or wishes depending on performance 235 380.
- Entering deeper abyssal layers normally requires appropriate rank, although special paths and “smuggling” trials exist 229 230.
- It can admit or assess visitors to ownerless abyssal planes, offering administrative authority or an owner template 397.
- Its systems may display rules and information as Eerie Whisper text; the difficulty of reading such text depends on the observer’s mental realm 396.
Spatial and World Interaction
The Abyss can bridge locations, layers, and worlds.
- It enables soul-based projections into the Endless Abyss, where bodies and even equipment may be condensed from the soul 39.
- It can form passages through False Abysses and connect to other abyssal levels 396.
- The creation of Abyss OL used an Abyss-derived darkness to establish a connection between Earth Star and the Abyss World, synchronizing their time flow 437 438.
- The official Abyss OL website can induce a weakened False Abyss experience in observers who focus on it intensely 438.
Relationship with Feng Buzhi
- Feng Buzhi — The Abyss remembers him after he gazes into the true Abyss, regards him as interesting, and sometimes responds to his calls 48 150.
- Feng Buzhi — His personal Abyss accompanies him, communicates through whistling and fluctuations, and becomes more intelligent when linked to the true Abyss 521 525.
- Feng Buzhi — He repeatedly studies the Abyss from different perspectives, gathers abyssal-layer slivers, and seeks to use its detonation to reach the sixth tier 617 618 639.
- Feng Buzhi — During the accelerated collapse, his consciousness fuses with the Abyss and stops its explosion at the moment it reaches zero 647.
- Syne / Yamata no Orochi — Syne’s consciousness is shattered after being drawn deeper into the Abyss, then merges with it before being reborn without its former memories 616 617.
- Dust Mountain’s Abyss — A lesser sliver associated with Dust Mountain’s plane is passively summoned and absorbed by Feng Buzhi’s familiar Abyss 557.
Major Events
- The five Abyssal Altars outside Human Newbie Town No. 74396 are revealed to grant different uncanny powers when activated 20.
- Feng Buzhi gains the title “Mortal Who Gazes into the Abyss” after surviving a gaze into the Abyss without having merged with bizarre power 28.
- After gazing into the true Abyss, Feng Buzhi obtains “True: Gazing into the Abyss,” marking that the Abyss remembers him 48.
- The Abyss first answers Feng Buzhi’s greeting with a whistle, producing a False Abyss 150.
- Feng Buzhi reaches an ownerless plane called Truth, refuses its owner template, and renames the plane Sea of Chaos 397.
- Feng Buzhi realizes his personal Abyss has always been with him and learns that its intelligence depends on its connection to the giant Abyss 521 525.
- He learns that every apparent abyssal sliver is a perspective of one true Abyss, then begins gathering layers and seeking a way to trigger its explosion 617.
- Feng Buzhi accelerates the Abyss’s collapse from an estimated 170 years to 70 years before stopping its explosion through fusion with it 640 647.
