He turned to look at Broly behind him.
Broly was still looking at that clump of withered grass.
The grass had already snapped. He crouched down, trying to piece the broken parts back together.
"Broly." Paragus's voice turned cold.
Broly stopped moving.
He slowly stood up, head lowered, looking at no one.
"This woman killed Vegeta," Paragus said. "Teach her a lesson."
Broly did not move.
He stood there with his head lowered, his hands hanging at his sides.
His long black hair covered most of his face.
"Broly." Paragus raised his voice.
Broly's shoulders flinched.
"...Don't want to." His voice was very soft. Low, but without the slightest aggression.
Like a child muttering after being scolded by his father.
Paragus's expression darkened completely.
"I said. Teach her a lesson."
Broly lowered his head even further.
His body language was completely closed off.
His arms pressed tightly against his sides, his shoulders hunched inward, his entire body trying to make itself smaller.
A two-meter-tall giant stood there like an injured bamboo stalk.
"She... didn't hit me," Broly said. "Why teach her a lesson?"
Paragus's hand moved to the control device at his waist.
Chen Mo saw the gesture.
He knew what that device did.
It was connected to the golden circlet on Broly's head and could send intense pain signals into Broly's brain, forcing him to obey commands.
In the movie, Paragus had used that thing to control Broly.
Like controlling a dog.
"Broly." Paragus finally spoke, lowering his voice even further. "I order you."
Broly did not move.
Paragus pressed the button on the control device with his thumb.
Broly's body suddenly went rigid.
The golden circlet flashed.
Blue-white arcs of electricity ran around its edge and burrowed into Broly's temples.
Broly clenched his teeth. With his head lowered, both hands balled into fists, his knuckles digging into his palms.
His entire arms were trembling.
Watching this, Chen Mo's stomach churned.
Paragus released the button.
"Hit her."
Broly raised his head.
For the first time.
His eyes were green.
A very deep green, unlike the eye color of any normal species.
He glanced at Android 18.
"Sorry," he said.
Then he moved.
He was not as fast as Android 18.
Not even close.
He charged forward and threw a punch. Android 18 sidestepped it, then casually struck his back with her palm.
Broly staggered two steps and crashed into a pile of rubble beside him.
Chunks of concrete exploded outward.
He climbed out from inside, his hair covered in dust and a shallow scratch on his face.
"Base form." Chen Mo pulled out his scouter, gave him a quick scan, and quietly read the data to himself.
Android 18's power level could not be detected. Her perpetual energy differed in nature from an organism's ki.
Broly charged again.
This time, Paragus pressed the control device twice.
Broly stopped halfway through his charge.
His whole body convulsed. He dropped to one knee, one hand braced against the rubble, his head hanging low.
A suppressed growl rumbled from his throat, as though something trapped inside him was trying to break free.
Paragus released the button.
"Get up. Continue."
Broly rose to his feet.
His eyes changed.
That trace of green sank away.
Something else surfaced.
Chen Mo could not tell what it was, but his instincts told him one thing.
This man no longer wanted to apologize.
Broly charged Android 18 again.
This time, there was no hesitation. His fist erupted with ki and slammed head-on into Android 18's crossed-arm guard.
Android 18 retreated half a step.
A fissure split the ground.
She lowered her gaze to her arms, then looked at Broly.
"Interesting," she said.
Broly said nothing. He threw punch after punch, faster and faster, each one landing with a deep explosive boom.
Android 18 began to counterattack. Energy blasts shot from her palms, striking Broly squarely in the chest.
Broly was sent flying. He crashed into a ruined building, blasting the entire wall outward from within.
He walked out of the rubble with a hole burned through his clothes, his skin completely unharmed.
Paragus pressed the control device again from behind.
Chen Mo saw Broly's steps falter. His head tilted to the side at an angle, as if his neck had suddenly lost control.
Then Paragus's voice carried over. "Full power."
Broly was silent for a second.
Then he raised his head.
Gold.
It was not that his hair had changed color. His entire body was enveloped in gold.
His aura burst from the ground, sending every piece of rubble into the air.
The pressure directly crushed a dent into the side of the spaceship in the distance.
Chen Mo's scouter screen overloaded. The numbers hit their upper limit, reset to zero, and began climbing again.
Super Saiyan.
Broly had transformed.
Chen Mo calculated rapidly. In Broly's early Super Saiyan state, judging by the movie version, his power level should have exceeded one billion.
Android 18 had no exact data, but the Android 18 of this timeline could fight Super Saiyan Trunks one-on-one...
About the same.
The two of them should be evenly matched.
A satisfied expression appeared on Paragus's face. He backed away several steps and stood beside the spaceship.
Broly did not attack immediately.
He stood where he was, golden aura continuously surging around him.
His eyes changed from green to teal. He lowered his head and looked at his hand.
Then he turned around and looked at Paragus.
Paragus's expression froze.
"Go fight her." For the first time, Paragus's voice carried a trace of instability. "Broly, I order you—"
He pressed the control device.
The headband lit up.
His aura swallowed the electric arcs.
Broly raised a hand, grabbed the headband, and tugged.
The headband did not break, but it deformed.
Paragus pressed the button three times in a row.
The control device did not respond.
Overloaded.
Chen Mo had witnessed the whole thing from nearby and had already quietly taken two steps back.
Android 18 stopped at Broly's side and watched the unexpected development. She did not take the chance to attack. She simply hovered in midair, watching Paragus.
She saw very clearly that Paragus's control device had failed.
"You're in trouble now," Android 18 said to Paragus.
Paragus did not answer. He stared at Broly, his face pale.
Broly turned toward Android 18.
In his Super Saiyan state, there was no trace left in Broly's eyes of that earlier "sorry."
He charged.
This time, his speed was on an entirely different level from before.
Android 18 met him head-on, an energy sphere lighting up in her palm as she blasted it forward.
The shockwave from the explosion flung Chen Mo three meters away. He landed on a pile of rubble, his back slamming hard against it.
He had no time to worry about the pain. He scrambled up and looked at the scouter.
Two signals were moving rapidly. Colliding, separating, then colliding again.
The ground kept trembling.
Chen Mo turned to look for Paragus.
The middle-aged man was retreating toward the spaceship at a rapid pace. He was already nearly at the hatch.
It was useless now. The control device had failed, Broly was completely out of control, and Paragus himself did not want to stay here either.
Chen Mo adjusted the scouter toward the northwest. Android 17's signal was still six hundred kilometers away and had not moved.
Then he swept it slightly north-northeast.
That abnormal energy blip.
Cell.
His position had changed. One hundred and fifty kilometers away. Still approaching.
Chen Mo stuffed the scouter back into his backpack and looked up at the battlefield.
Android 18 and Broly had already fought their way into the sky.
Energy blasts exploded amid the clouds, and every collision sent a rumble like muffled thunder rolling down from above.
It was impossible to tell who had the upper hand. The two signals were tangled together on the screen, making them impossible to track separately.
Chen Mo stood amid the ruins and took a deep breath.
Good.
Android 18 was occupied.
Paragus had already climbed aboard the spaceship, and the hatch had closed.
Cell was still one hundred and fifty kilometers away.
He activated Flight, rising straight into the air before flying southwest.
After about thirty seconds of flying, he looked back.
The battle in the sky was still going.
The flashes from the energy explosions lit up the storm clouds from within, spreading outward in expanding rings.
Android 18 probably had not noticed him leaving.
Or even if she had, she had no time to deal with him.
Chen Mo turned back, pushed his speed to the limit, and shot toward Korin Tower.
A notification popped up in his mind.
[Detected that the host has left the monitoring range of the emotion collection target.] [Gentle reminder: The target's emotional value is currently in a high-intensity fluctuation range (combat state) and cannot be collected remotely.] [It is recommended that the host return to the target's side as soon as possible.]
"Maybe you should shut up," Chen Mo muttered.
This damn system was trying to get me killed.
Wind rushed past his ears. Korin Tower was still far away.
What kept spinning through his mind was that slender tower, and the bottle of Ultra Divine Water atop it—with a ninety-three percent chance of death.
And what Android 18 had said.
"Don't die."
Chen Mo had never answered that.
But now, he somewhat understood why she had said it.
Not because he was important.
It was because in this world, he was the only one who knew her name was Lazuli, knew Cell was coming, and knew about her past.
If he was gone, that knowledge would be gone too.
"Fine." Chen Mo muttered to himself in midair. "Then I won't die just yet."
He sped up.
On the scanner's screen, Cell's dot was still moving south.
And Korin Tower, due west, had an extremely faint but steady signal.
Not human.
Not an android.
Something else.
A cat.
Chen Mo stared at the dot, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
Before he could drink the Ultra Divine Water, he had to get past Korin first.
Chen Mo imagined the expression Korin might have.
It would probably be about the same as Paragus's expression when he had just learned Vegeta was dead.
Forget it. He would deal with that when the time came.
Korin Tower appeared on the distant horizon.
Long and slender, piercing straight into the clouds, its summit blurred by mist and impossible to see.
Chen Mo took a deep breath.
